A perfect night out is usually the one that arrives in December, some Muscovites say. This is rock-solid truth if what they are talking about is the “December Nights” music festival at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.
Created by the legendary Russian pianist Svyatoslav Richter back in 1981, it immediately became one of the key events on the city calendar, featuring A-list musicians from around the globe, performing throughout the month of December.
A synergy of music, poetry, painting and theatre, each December the White Hall of the museum turns into a Mecca of culture and beauty.
Musicians from Germany, France, Austria, Spain and Italy will take part in the festival this year.
The festival will open on December 1st with an 18th Century German opera performed by the Russian Pratum Integrum orchestra, featuring British tenor Daniel Terner.
Among the festival’s highlights is a performance by the “Soloists of Moscow” conducted by Yury Bashmet, the festival’s art director, and a concert by the Spanish music ensemble “Hesperion XXI”, praised for playing early music of the 16th and 17th Centuries.
