Ringing a thousand bells

A large-scale exhibition of bells – over a thousand items from all over the world – opens in the Russian capital on April 27.

Music bells, door bells, ringing bells, interior design bells, police bells, alarm bells, jingle-bells, church bells and many, many others you have probably never even heard of.

The first international exhibition features all kinds of bells from private collections and museums from different countries and continents, from the Far East to Africa, Canada to India, and Greece to Indonesia.

Among the main highlights of the display are Scythian bells dating back to 8th century BCE, as well as Chinese and Vietnamese bells.

Each has a story to tell – or rather to ring? – about the country of its origin, the material it was made from and the epoch it belonged to.
