One of the oldest NGO’s in Russia, the Russian Geographical Society, marks its 165th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the organization is holding activities to promote its work at home and abroad.
The organization is headed by the Russian Emergency Minister, Sergey Shoigu. He has arrived in St Petersburg, where the headquarters of the NGO are located, to discuss a series of joint traveling exhibitions with the State Hermitage museum, where some of the society's collections are kept.
The precious exhibits have been gathered throughout the history of the Russian Geographical Society, which is considered one of the oldest in the world.
Among its many achievements include the discovery of Antarctica, the thorough exploration of the Arctic region, and opening up central Asian culture to the world.
The Russian Geographical Society comprises 27,000 members from all across the country and abroad, and has 127 regional offices. The Society was founded August 18, 1845 at the request of Tsar Nicolas I. During Soviet times, the organization was renamed the All-Union Geographical Society, and operated under the USSR’s Academy of Science. In 1992, the organization restored its original historic name.
