Billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, worth $9.5 billion according to Forbes magazine, has set up a literary award, entitled ‘NOS’.
The annual award, established by Prokhorov’s charitable foundation for cultural initiatives, is aimed at mapping out new trends in contemporary Russian literature.
Born in 1965 in Moscow. Received an Honours degree in International Economic Relations from Moscow State Financial Institute. 1989-1992: CEO of the International Bank for Economic Cooperation.
1992–1993: CEO of International Financial Company. Headed Onexim Bank from 1993 to 2000, Rosbank from 2000 to 2001, and Norilsk Nickel between 2001 and 2007. In 2006 he was awarded the Order of Friendship for his significant contribution to the growth of Russia’s economic potential. Currently President of Onexim Group, and Co-Chairman of Polyus Gold
Founders of the award are hoping that NOS could soon become an important intellectual playground for discussions on literature, art, society, and politics.
The winner of NOS will receive $20,000.
One of the main highlights of the award ceremony is that the jury will publicly give reasons for their choice of the finalists in the presence of journalists and writers in order to make the decision-making transparent.
