A huge printed banner, 30x11 meters in length, has been stolen from Witte de With Center of modern art in Rotterdam. The poster was a part of an installation by the Russian art group AES+F.
The incident took place on February 19, when a banner named “The Feast of Trimalchio” was stolen from the museum’s facade in order to be replaced with another image – a huge Michael Jackson portrait by German artist Isa Genzken.
Workers were so busy installing the new banner on the building that they missed the moment when “The Feast of Trimalchio", lying folded on the sidewalk, disappeared.
The head of Rotterdam’s museum was extremely surprised to have been told that such a large artwork could be stolen in broad daylight. Artists were immediately informed about the loss, while police continue searching for the poster.
“The Feast of Trimalchio", named after the character of an ancient Roman novel, "Satyricon", became one of four huge works installed on the facade of the museum building, united by the name "Between you and I”. They were supposed to remain in the museum for one year within the limits of the large exhibition, “Morality”.
The Russian group AES+F – Tatyana Arzamasova, Lev Evzovich, Evgeny Svyatsky, and Vladimir Fridkes have already displayed "the Feast of Trimalchio" at the biennial in Venice.
