One of Russia’s leading violists, Yury Bashmet, and the leading ballerina of The Mariinsky Theater, Ulyana Lopatkina, will perform in Vancouver on Wednesday as part of a Sochi 2014 Olympics presentation.
As a part of the so-called Cultural Olympiad, the host country of the 2014 Winter Olympics will present a “divine evening of ballet and classical music” entitled “Passion of Russia”.
Tchaikovsky, Paganini and Stravinsky will be performed by the country’s leading artistic figures: viola master and conductor Yuri Bashmet and his Grammy-winning chamber orchestra the Moscow Soloists, principal dancer at the Mariinsky Theater Uliana Lopatkina and performers from the Mariinsky and the Bolshoi Theaters.
The fusion of great musical and dance masters with the masterpieces of great composers promises to be an unforgettable show for the Canadian audience. Bashmet, who was recently appointed as an official ambassador for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, is sure that “if Russia has something to show abroad it definitely would be music and sport”.
At the February 10 gala-concert to be given within the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, Bashmet will play his Paolo Testore viola, made in 1758 and almost identical to the one played by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
“The Passion of Russia: Uliana Lopatkina & Yuri Bashmet” is on February 10 at The Orpheum, Smithe Street and Seymour Street.
Every year in the lead-up to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, a special program will be prepared for the Cultural Olympiad. Unique thematic projects including 2010’s year of Cinema; 2011’s year of Theater; 2012’s year of Music and 2013’s year of Museums will please art lovers of the world.
