Two young pianists from Russia have won the first and the second prizes at the Honens International Piano Competition in Canada’s Calgary.

Canada’s Honens Competition is one of the world’s most prestigious events of its kind and Canada’s leading presenter of piano music. This year’s competition was a triumph for pianists from Russia, who proved to be the best. Georgy Chaidze, 21, won the first prize of $35,000. The second prize also went to fellow Russian Evgeny Starodubtsev. Starodubtsev, 27, took home a $25,000 prize.

The third place and $17,500 was handed over to Gilles Vonsattel from Switzerland.

In addition, according to The Globe and Mail, the three winners have also won the right to play a series of concerts, the chance to continue their studies for free, and a recording contract. These bonuses are estimated to be worth $500,000 in total.

Ukrainians Natalia Kudritskaya and Kirill Zvegintsov from Ukraine made it to the final and were awarded $10,000 in prizes.

The Honens International Piano Competition is held every three years. This year is its sixth incarnation. In 1996, Russian Maxim Filippov became the first winner of this prestigious award.
