Three major exhibitions are opening on Tuesday at the State Hermitage museum of fine arts in St.Petersburg to mark its 245th anniversary.

The exact date of the museum’s founding is unknown, but officially it is December 7. In Russia it’s also Saint Catherine’s day – the day of the protector of Catherine II of Russia, the Russian Empress who was the patron of the museum foundation.

The three exhibitions are dedicated to ancient times and include “Enamels of the world”, “Art and culture of ancient cities of the Northern Black Sea Region” and “Dagestan art of the 14th- beginning of the 20th centuries”.

The first exhibition will offer 320 extraordinary works of arts and crafts of masters of Europe and the Far East from the collection of British-Iranian property developer, art collector and philanthropist Nasser Khalili. The works were created from the 1700s through today.

“Art and culture of ancient cities of the Northern Black Sea Region” opens after the reconstruction. The museum has had a series of renovations to restore the historical exteriors of the halls. The wall-paintings stylized to the frescos in Pompeii were badly damaged during the 1930s. Now that the interiors have had their authentic appearances returned, the permanent collections have been returned to the halls and are ready to be displayed for visitors.

The Eastern culture halls open the new permanent exposition, “Dagestan art of the 14th- beginning of the 20th centuries.” There, visitors will see the nation’s brightest examples of craft works, jewelry and arms decoration.

All exhibitions will open on December 8 in the State Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg.
