“Resurrection: Infatuation Is Over, Love Remains.” What sounds like a mantra repeated non-stop to forget old relationships is in fact the title of a musical brought together in Japan, with all the roles in the show exclusively played by women.
The performance is based on Leo Tolstoy’s masterpiece and is on at the Takarazuka Grand Theater, founded in 1914.
Unlike Japan’s landmark Noh Theater, where male actors play both male and female roles, all performers at the Takarazuka are women, portraying a variety of characters.
It is not the first time the Japanese company has turned to Leo Tolstoy’s works. Back in 1962 its repertoire featured a musical performance inspired by the Resurrection, while in 2000 Tolstoy’s tour de force Anna Karenina appeared on its program.
The latest production, Resurrection: Infatuation Is Over, Love Remains, features a number of familiar Russian tunes, lavish sets and glamorous costumes to emphasize the Russian spirit as they imagine it in Japan.
