Those afraid of staining their clothes should probably keep away from the Chilean city of Quillion as an estimated 7,000 people took to the streets for the annual tomato fight.

Local farmers who grow the fruit supplied some 40 tons of tomatoes for people to smash and throw at each other, literally flooding the streets with a river of freshly pressed tomato juice.

The action may look like a savage bloody battle at first glance, however the participants seemed to enjoy the carnage.

The "War of the Tomato" tradition continues  in Chile to raise the crop's profile in the country.

Similar events are held each year in Spain, Colombia, Costa Rica and the United States, Reuters reports.
