Water Lilies by Claude Monet, 1905

A painting from Claude ‘Water Lilies’ series which is considered to be among his best will be sold through Christie’s in New York. Experts say the artwork could fetch up to $50 million.

The auction house will sell the painting during the Impressionist and modern art sale on November 7.

The work dates from 1905 when Monet began painting pictures of his garden's lily pond in Giverny, France. It is considered among the best in the series.

The painting was in the collection of Ethel Strong Allen, the widow of Wall Street executive Herbert Allen. Allen’s family acquired the painting in 1979. It was never on public display until the late 1990s. In 1998 the Allen family loaned the painting for the Monet in the 20th Century exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

The most expensive Monet painting ever auctioned is another work from the Water Lilies series. In June 2008 his Water Lily Pond, painted in 1919, sold for $ 80.4 million.
