American donut producer, Dunkin’ Donuts, has franchised its brand to a Russian company which plans to open ten locations this year in Moscow.

Russian company Donuts Project received exclusive franchising rights for development of the chain in Russia and Ukraine. The company’s owner, Konstantin Petrov, said that brand would be situated in both street and business centres and that he planned to open no less than 50 establishments in Moscow.

A representative from Real Estate company Magazin Magazinov, part of CB Richard Ellis network, said that the first one will appear on Moscow’s Novy Arbat. While two other consultant companies have said that Donuts Project is aggressively looking for locations, reports Vedomosti newspaper.

Petrov says that the chain maker will be open in various formats, from full-fledged stores to mini-cafes and says the investment into each location is around six million roubles.

Despite a rather large presence of domestic coffee shops in Russia and Moscow, Valery Silin, PR director for Rosinter Restaurants, sees this as the right time for the project.

“Despite the fact that in Russia there is a lot of domestic players and in the last few years a number of foreign have entered, we haven’t seen any market saturation. The number per capita in London and New York is seven times larger than in Moscow."

Rosinter estimates the value of the cafes and restaurants in Russia at 443 billion Roubles, although only 5% comes from coffeehouses.

Tatyana Klyuchinskaya, director of the commercial real estate department at Colliers International says that the popularity of the café format as well as the price will draw in customers.

“Dunkin Donuts, most likely, will operate in a low price format (average bill $5-7), and in crisis the price is the core factor for consumers in choosing restaurants and cafes.”

Dunkin Donuts, which opened its first store in 1950 and today has 8835 locations around the world, has already had a first attempt at the Russian market in 1996 but had to pull out shortly after opening.

I have my doubts that America is part of the West...Do you really think that France, Italy and Spain have the exactly the same diet as America?

@Enrique. I am talking about the companies when I am talking about Westernizing. I am talking about big American Companies siphoning out wealth and injecting poison. And for those who think I am a villager and don't know what is Dunkin Donuts, I lived in America 10 years and I know what they are. There is another company there Krispy Kreme who makes tastier ones, but no less fattening and disgusting. There is more to it then a successful product. There are endless places that sell tastier donuts that won't give you a heart attack or make you bed ridden to the point you need a crane and whale sling to get you out of bed and into the hospital. We don't see Russians in that condition because these places don't exist here in numbers yet. So telling me that Russians can't eat pizza? Are you purposefully trying to miss the point? That is a cuisine. Do you think American Pizza Delivery is real Italian Pizza? They aren't necessarily successful, but large quantity frozen food soaked in preservatives to serve a large population all at once. Quick food for lazy people. Now they are increasing work here in Russia and taxes with no pay increases. So people will have even less family time. At the same time these big companies are coming in from the USA to our markets. To state Russia isn't Westernizing is being blind. I am 100% sure you never spent more than a vacation here in Russia that lasted longer than a month. Nor your knowledge in the Russian language and added time in America to see the things like Married with Children from Fox TV going to Russia's TNT Счастливы Вместе. It is absolutely the same. Another example, Cash for Clunkers is a political program in the US to bring in used cars. Russia now follows the same scam erasing a used car market for lower income families all to help big business.

Artyiom, I repeat to you that that those products doesn´t mean any "Westernizing" as they are just manufactured by several U.S. companies. They are not traditional food from any Western European nation. The opposite happens with pizzas, spaguetti or canneloni in Italy, or with paella in Spain. Do you think really that Russians shouldn´t eat any pizza or paella because they are "Western"? in fact much more traditional from the West than burgers or donuts.
