Excise hike to drive beer lovers to bigger budget contribution

Beer drinkers are facing a sharp price rise, with the government planning to triple excises. But brewers saying higher duties could drive beer lovers to stronger drinks.

It would have been more informative if there was input from a public health source in addition to an industry source, and if you indicated what the current excise tax is on beer, which is going to be trebled. For example, here in Massachusetts we have just increased the beer tax approximately 15 times. You might think people would be flying to St. Petersburg during the next four months to get their beer at the lower rate. However, is it lower? Up until the first of this month we paid 1 cent excise tax on a 12 oz can of beer! We're going to be paying a 6.25% sales tax now in addition to the penny excise. Cities will be allowed to add 0.75% to that for their own uses, so it's going to be 7%. An average can of beer at a package store here is about $2.00, so in addition to the 1 cent excise, we will pay 14 cents sales tax. Responsible Beer Drinkers For Fair Taxation forced the change.
