Russia has secured a one billion dollar contract from India to upgrade 70 Russian-made MIG-29 jet fighters. The jets were originally sold to India in the 1980's.
Under the 5-year deal Russia will install new radars, weapons control systems and improved engines for the jets.
The new equipment could extend their life-span by 15 years.
It's hoped the deal could help Russia secure a further $US 10 billion contract to sell planes to India, beating off competition from European producers.
Russia’s credit rating risesStandard and Poor’s has raised Russia's sovereign credit outlook from stable to positive. The rating agency said the global liquidity crunch hasn’t harmed Russia that much. |
Higher gas prices to squeeze UkraineUkraine may be the big loser from a decision by Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to increase gas prices to European-level prices from 2009. Gazprom buys natural gas from Central Asian republics and re-sells it to Europe through its own pipelines. |
