A Cold War kid comes to the Kremlin/ Part IV

My final day in the land of War and Peace.

I’m determined to find some Cold War action even if I have to see it inside a museum. Which is precisely where I’m heading.

I decide to take the Metro instead of walking. An unusual act of bravery for me. The interior walls and domed ceilings of these spotless underground railroad systems are constructed as eloquently as a classical art museum, with magnificent sculptures, frescoes, colorful oil paintings and stained glass. But the Moscow Metro, I realize, is not only a living monument to Russian culture, but it also runs deep. Very deep. Far deeper than any subway system I’ve ever encountered anywhere in the world.

The statements, views and opinions expressed in this column are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of RT.

Thanks Sue (and Gina!): I'm definitely going to pick up your novel. Perhaps I'll read it on my return to Moscow maybe in the Spring when I'll see St. Petersburg as well. This is a land of contrasts, but it has so much to offer. I also see a Russia that will be very close the US sooner than later. BTW, my new one Moonlight Falls is released on December 15th. Cheers and thanks for writing! Vin

I've really enjoyed reading your pieces, Vince. As I mentioned here before, I loved my time in Moscow, despite its difficulties and contradictions -- or maybe because of them. I was completely overwhelmed by the Metro stations, too. An entire chapter of my novel, "Tangled Roots," takes place in one. If you ever feel nostalgic for your time in post Cold War Moscow, you can take a look at that.....Thanks.
