Little England thinks small

David Miliband, Britain’s Foreign Secretary, has done it again. Last month he demonstrated to the world he is completely unfit to be dealing with foreign policy. His knowledge of history, the Cold War, and everything that has happened since is nothing less than embarrassing. There is a whole host of books for “idiots” Miliband should read before he opens his mouth. But he appears to have no time to read or learn (or even think). Instead he prefers grandstanding and moralising.
At the latest EU summit, the UK worked in unison with the EU’s refuseniks when it came to Russia. With the aid of the Baltic republics and Poland, Miliband blocked the EU from restarting negotiations on a new Russia-EU partnership agreement. This is at a time when the EU’s heavies – France, Germany, and Italy – prefer to look to the future. The heavies have already gotten over Georgia’s self-imposed fate. Apparently Miliband understands nothing when it comes to realism and geopolitics.
Just think about it. The EU didn’t back the Saakashvili regime’s preemptive aggression against South Ossetia. Why should the EU’s collective foreign and trade policies suffer as a result? There is nothing the EU can do to change the new status quo in Georgia, South Ossetia, and Abkhazia. All that it can do is be part of the peace process. The EU brokered a reasonable deal to end the conflict and I strongly believe it continues to play an important role in the peace process.
Miliband is small-minded and his approach toward Russia is at odds with EU interests. The EU and Russia simply must have a relationship. And the best kind of relationship is when Russia knows it can speak and negotiate with a single voice in Brussels. Miliband promotes EU disunity for a cause that is not even noble. It is ironic that people like Miliband claim Russia acts like a 19th century power. Miliband and his ilk think they can wag their finger and the world will stop and really care. This is hubris of the worse kind.
Anyone with a modicum of commonsense understands a new Russia-EU partnership agreement is very desirable for both sides. Often we hear that Russia “divides and conquers” individual members of the EU. Rarely is it pointed out that Russia has no choice but to deal with individual members as long as Brussels is indecisive. Miliband only adds to this indecision.
Miliband and the other EU refuseniks will eventually have to cave into pressure. They are isolated within the EU now and that isolation will only grow. Their false and hypocritical nobility belongs to a past age. In the meantime, Russia will wait on the sidelines whistling Dixie until the EU gets its act together. Maybe during this time Miliband will hire a tutor or at least crack a few thin textbooks to enhance his thin knowledge of international relations.
