John 25 August, 2007, 11:12 Russia has resumed flights of her long distant bombers, Which have not been seen since the end of the cold war,I agree Russia has every right to do so but over recent days it appears these are being deployed in quite a provocative manner. The RAF has over the last three months on seven different occasions had to send Euro Jet fighters on intercept missions as the Russian TU95 bombers were on a direct flight path across UK territory the bombers only changed course when directly challenged by the fighters. Now do not misunderstand me i also believe that deploying NATO missiles in Poland is provocative but two wrongs do not make a right.Russia and the west appear to be taking a step back in time to the old cold war era i hope cooler head prevail before maybe by accident a really serious incident occurs I understand Russia wishes to build its millitary strengh to regain its prestige in the world which is understandable, But must be careful that this does not lead to a cold War mk2.History has shown that this would distroy Russia's economy leaving the people in abject poverty.Russia is becoming economicaly strong but given the fact that Moscow has more Billionaires than any other city on the planet only proves that the wealth is not spreading quickly enough to the regions. Russia still has much to do to improve the lives of all her people, Engaging in an arms race with the West should be the last thing on her Governments mind.Russia must look to the future not the past.

Al 25 August, 2007, 15:01 Go now Nader, its just as beautiful as it ever was from what I can tell. Probably a lot has changed, some for the worst, some for better but the people are still friendly and the small cities such as Smolensk are still beautiful places to visit and live. I've been going there since the mid 90's and the wonders there never cease to impress me.

Dino 26 August, 2007, 00:57 Peter Lavell, made me LAUGH so hard I almost had a heart attack. He will defend Russia until his last breath on Earth over The No Good "Georgians" and there Evil plot to make Russia look like the bad guy.well Mister Lavell its looking like Russia. Is THE BAD GUY! With the latest lye over entering Georgia airspace and the downing of the Russian aircraft, it looks look the Georgians were telling THE TRUTH all along and Mister Lavell is looking more and more like a Propaganda Puppet for the regime. Russia has in fact been bombing Georgia and entering its airspace illegally! Russia is back sliding to its old secretive, lying, cover up ways. I ask Mr Lavell this Question: What color is the sky in your little world?

Bill 26 August, 2007, 10:15 Having lived in the former Soviet Russia, and in the USA and coming back to post Soviet Russia, one can tell a lot has changed, socially and politically. For some reason ignorance still seems to prevail both in the West and Russia. This I fear will never change because both sides spew so much propaganda that the average citizen only knows that it is the truth. It seems that rational thought can not coexist in todays world and that my friends will lead to tragedy.

IMHO 26 August, 2007, 15:29 To Dino: Your message/comment is not original. In my program I stated the facts and commented on them. However, all you write is a rant without evidence or proof. You also do not present an alternative point of view. So who is supporting propaganda? You should break-out of your little world controlled by western media. And, lastly, my surname is spelled Lavelle. Keep watching and writing.

Gerald 26 August, 2007, 17:29 Peter, I want to commend you for your insightful commentaries on Russia and matters affecting Russia. It is like a breath of fresh air to hear this more realistic point of view. I am so tired of the constant anti-Russian sentiment and propaganda from my own Western (British) media. I see The Economist has yet again made a few stabs at Putin, in their usual character assassin ways. It is so predictable, and these slanderous accusations only make Russia look better to be honest.

Dino 27 August, 2007, 00:36 Mr Lavell (miss spell on purpose) Blogs are all about RANTING. aren't they really? I will not stoop to name calling though. Am I mistaken but this post was called: Take off your gloves with IMHO? Your a Russian version of our own Rush Limbaugh here in the states (I do NOT support!)You or Rush will never admit to a wrong.not in a million years and whats great about blogs and the internet (American Invention, by the way) Is to remind people like you, that your DEAD wrong on Georgia, maybe not on other issues. If your country was Smart you should have realized that the USA did the same thing in Vietnam, with Cambodia and was caught red handed and my country lied too. Learn from our mistakes. It's the 21 first century you can't hide the FACTS anymore in this day and age of internet! Thank you for allowing me to RANT on your web page.I hope to visit Russia some day, contrary to popular belief I do not HATE Russia.I'm just saddened that your country is back sliding to its old ways, when you where on the right track with economic freedoms. If this website was truly democratic you would allow users to post hyper links or URLS's to "prove" our points, like most other websites offer now.

sam 27 August, 2007, 06:56 It seems that Dino seems to have a problem with Russia and some how only sees the side of georgia.First the missile, since the russian UN statement Georgia has not defended itself or produced evidence that russia is not saying the truth. As for the plane, well everyone claiming its not theirs and and that they took it down.so why is georgia the one saying the truth? When the USSR was going to station missiles next to USA in Cuba, the americans did not like it.So why should the russians want Nato next to them? Its clear that Dino sees the world affairs one sided and anyone who does not jump when the USA says is not a friend in his books, be it russia ,france or germany. For one we the british are fed up of jumping hope Mr. Brown sees it the way we the voters see it.No more another blair thank you.

Carl 27 August, 2007, 08:14 Dear Mr Putin (Sorry Lavelle) I find your narrow view of reporting very disappointing, it has all the tones of years long gone. Your comments on democracy are not valid, its based on the will of the majority not an enforced iron curtain(Sound Familiar).Who will be the next president of the Russian Federation? A vote by the people, or a hand picked successor? Power to who? Not the people my friend. People who enjoy freedom have the right to choose, unlike certain former CCCP states. You intimate that the West interfers with other nations free will yet Russia does the same. The Ukraine as an example, Moscow wanted its puppet as president and although this has been delayed Mr Putin will get his way. I/We do not live in the perfect world and just to under line I do not hate Russia or her people, I am married to a russian lady and have visited Russia many times, I have seen for myself your society up real close and believe me you are far from perfect, Just like the rest of the world. You too suffer from corruption and organised crime syndicates through all levels of society and government, which unfortunately is a disease born from the west, examples I hear you ask, Too many too mention and you know it. The resumption of Russian Bombers over flying the west is no more than a token jesture from a lion that has lost his teeth, I do not agree with the wests actions but as has already been said two wrongs do not make a right. Russia would be better off spending the money that they waste on fuel for the bombers (Which it can`t really afford) on improving life for her poorer citizens and investing in her young for they are Russia`s real future. A great nation and people would use this resource to much better ends that playing cat and mouse with the west,The west is not threat to Russia. Mr Lavelle, Balanced views is the way forward, Stop looking into the past for insperation.

Dino 27 August, 2007, 12:56 "Carl" is right on the money.Hey Mr Putin (Sorry Lavelle) In my country when you STEAL something from somebody you must pay restitution to your victim for "YOUR" crime.because it is the "MORAL" thing to do. Seems to me Russia should be paying all the Baltic countries it STOLE from the people, after WWII some RESTITUTION (especially Georgia!) or going the extra mile to show some remorse! Seems to me if Russia is always crying about being called "The Bad Guy" in world opinion polls.they would try to pay some restitution for the Ills of the past FIRST, then they might have a little credibility on the world stage! Restitution defined : 1. The act of restoring to the rightful owner something that has been taken away, lost, or surrendered. See synonyms at reparation. 2. The act of making good or compensating for loss, damage, or injury; indemnification. 3. A return to or restoration of a previous state or position.

PK 27 August, 2007, 18:25 Dear Mr Lavelle I found your analysis of the Kazahk elections somewhat bemusing. How can anyone talk about the elections without mentioning the principle reason for the elections, so that President Nazarbaev can continue as President without a restriction on the number of terms. I fear that this is a further slide into authoritarianism for Kazahkstan. You point out that people in the Kazahkstan are primarily focusing on stability over democracy. This is an arguement also made about Putin's Russia, which I suspect is the real reason for producing this article. Yet what kind of stability does this really produce? Stability for the ruling political classes and their buisness adventures. While the majority of the people face stagnation. Lets not forget, the Soviet Union offered its citizens a stable society for long periods of it's existence, but would we really like to see a return to the USSR? You also claim that the people of the post-communist world have a greater learning experience than those in neo-con Washington. I agree with you. Yet, why is it that other post-Soviet countries such as those in the Baltics have managed to progress towards democractization yet Russia and Kazahkstan have faultered. Even a poorer former communist country Mongolia, which doesn't have the natural resources can make more progress, yet lacks the wealth of natural resources while still offering its citizens the stability you value so highly. Do not make excuses for these failing democracies, others have succeeded from worse vantage points.

sam 28 August, 2007, 08:29 It seems that some people IE Dino really needs to read up on history and get a reality check. Russia is not the USSR.It suffered under USSR like any other counrty.Who will pay russia for the millions of Russians killed by Stalin?who just happens to be Georgian by the way. Also by the way,If I am not mistaken The USSR was the only Country who did not demand"Restitution" from already distroyed germany. If anyone has a problem with USSR met them all that voluntary joined the USSR which includes your georgia and all apart for the three forced into the union

Dino 28 August, 2007, 15:57 "Sam" why the heck would Russia need or DEMAND restitution from Germany after WWII? Seems to me they stole 1/2 of the countries land and population and its scientists, wealth and technology, put whats left of the Nazi's in a Russian Gulags.that seems like PLENTY of restitution to me! "Sam" do I hear you right? Are you saying that the average Russian should get restitution from the USSR? Well then they can melt down all the Statues of Lennon and Carl Marx and sell them for scrap iron that are still in Russia today. for there grievances.

PK 28 August, 2007, 16:54 Sam, the USSR did not demand restitution from Germany, but it didn't stop them dismantaling numerous factories in the part of the Germany they did occupy and moving them eastwards to be reconstructed in the USSR! The east of Germany was then partitioned and placed under the Soviet sphere of influence, to be further exploited for about with unfavourable economic agreements. These were then only reversed once uprisings began in the 1950's. The USSR might not have officially asked for restitution, but do not think that Germany was not made to pay.

George 28 August, 2007, 17:26 Russia has far more friends then it has enemys , its just that its enemys are more loud, driven by there pathological hate torwards her. I also see some people in other posts in this website attacking RT and its editorial which i find very disrespectful, i find it us an international channel the best one out there, name me another one that gives both sides of the story like RT doze, just name me one? the western press we got here is all lies and propaganda in issues concerning Russia one sided and bias, but they find it ok to tell RT on how it should cover its news stories us if Russians don't have the right to there own editorial stuff but they have to ask us (westerners) on how they should cover there news, i hope RT stays they way it is for a long time. mr Lavelle keep talking we apreciate your programs. keep up the good work!

IMHO 28 August, 2007, 17:31 Replies to recent posts (please folks understand I will do my best to reply to all comments, but sometimes news events and programming keep me really busy). Thanks Gerald, the whole point of IMHO is to comment on the commentariat. I don’t ask everyone to agree with me, but only to examine the bias of Western media. Oh! You are so right about The Economist – along with the Washington Post, the WSJ, and the FT – it is the most anti-Russia line found in media. (Interesting aside, the Washington Post was actually very easy on the Soviet Union!). Dino – if you can’t or are unwilling to at least spell my name right, why should any of us read your rants? Sam, you right on many accounts. At least you are willing to consider “who benefits” from provocations. Maybe there are members of Russia’s peacekeeping force in Georgia’s frozen conflicts looking for trouble. But I can’t see how the Kremlin benefits from these mysterious events. Carl, I could not disagree more. Democracy today is treated like a fetish. It is fetish something akin to communism. I am pragmatic and will to support what works – considering the material on the ground. Soviet communism destroyed so much what is today the post-Soviet space and it continues to suffer because of this. The post-Soviet space doesn’t need western lecturing, it needs time and stability. And Carl, I am not balanced. I am a commentator – I very forcefully push my views. That’s my job! Dino (again). I suggest you read “Postwar” by Tony Judt. It is a history of postwar Europe to today. You will find that your comments are sophomoric and naïve. If only the world you write about existed (or could exist). Get some more education. PK – see my comment to Carl. Sam – good one. You appear to know something about history (and geopolitical logic).

Dino 29 August, 2007, 01:48 Hey Mr Putin (Sorry Lavelle) Are we a little sensitive? You call my comments sophomoric? I choose SATIRE instead! I'm trying to illustrate the total absurdity of your one sided mind set. Wheres your sense of humor? All this buzz about bias reporting from American media sources is totally true.but come on really what media source isn't? Thats whats great about the internet we get to choose our media news sources, not the Government. Why do think I'm here? To make trouble NO. I enjoy this website and streaming video, but let me tell you "mini me" Mr Putin you say my comments are naive? Let me post URL's and hyper links to bolster my positions? You people think I just make all this stuff up? I can back up everything I say with FACTS. How come you don't comment on Russia paying restitution to the Baltic States for all those years of occupation? Hmmmm? A little embarrassing isn't it. Yea but everyone is picking on Poor Russia.

sam 29 August, 2007, 05:04 One has to keep an open mind in international affairs as one would with everyday events and that is ask a question of yourself-what is the motive? and who has more to gain in a conflict?.In reply to Dino,i never said russians want reparations from the USSR(it does not exist)I am commenting on you saying russia should pay reparations. As for who took what from Germany, well germany was divided into 4 parts not one.dont think there were many factories left standing after the war to take away, the RAF and USAF took care of that.Everyone used german labour to rebuild itself.my house in London was build by German POWs.yet we did ask for reparations.Nazis in gulags? now you are just being funny if you think that is reparation.Yes Russia got kaliningrad(Konigsburg).why? cos Lithuania did not want it so it was added to Russia within the ussr.As for technology and scientists well i do believe the USA got the lion's share. As for melting statues of Lenin. Why? its history you know? a country should not wipe its history be it good or bad.Changing Leningrad and stalingrad back to its old names is one thing distroying your history is another

sam 29 August, 2007, 06:45 Dino my man,you still on about reparations? so its no longer georgia to be paid now its batic states. RUSSIA IS NOT THE USSR is it? when georgia, ukraine belorus et al contribute then russia should also contribute. It is my believe the baltic states should however get nothing for supporting adolf. the fact is you have no understanding of anything.sorry if i am rude but that is the fact. This your calling Mr Lavelle(mr Putin) is not even your idea is it? Carl first used it you liked it and like a child with a new toy cannt let go or come up with something new. a clever man says a joke once to the same audience.
