Mikey 10 July, 2008, 18:01 Suprisingly, the role of Stalin is underestimated - despite a well-known quote, that he "took the rule of the country with a wooden plough and left it with a nuclear bomb". The means he used may be seen as not being worth the aim, and still it is under his rule that the country has progressed more than ever. Another person of similar importance in the history is Peter the Great, but due to the time period he lived in, his deeds seem smaller compared.

Vijay 10 July, 2008, 18:43 If all history is considered, there's no better choice than Peter the Great. Medium term wise - Stalin. Recent history - Putin, of course. However as they say, history has a strange way of repeating itself constantly.!

Sevodnya_Net 10 July, 2008, 20:05 Another vote for Gorbachev here: the only competent Russian politician of the modern era to try to empower his people. That he failed was not entirely his fault. Honourable mentions to Shostakovich, Bulgakov and Lermontov. Tolstoy and Peter the Great miss out as being too obvious, which I agree is hardly fair!

Sam 10 July, 2008, 22:47 Very hard Question to answer as it is not specific. There were many great people in Russian history in different aspects of life.Contributing in their own way. Some of them had a dark past, but over all did more for Russia as a nation. Alexander Nevsky,For resisting the repeated invasions from the catholic west. There by preserving the Russian culture and orthodox way of life. Ivan the great, for setting up the first unified Russian nation. Peter the Great, for pulling Russia out of the dark ages, and making her a major player. Lenin,He showed that there are no masters and no slaves.Showing that a common man can make his own future and not have a life role assigned to him by a superior. ( this has nothing to do with the outcome of his actions and what happened when Stalin took over ) Putin,For picking up Russia from her knees after the Collapse of the USSR,and making her what she is today.Mind you that he is not yet history but current affairs. In the Sciences, I would nominate Dmitri Mendeleev or Ivan Pavlov. In the Arts it can only be Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin or Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. In Literature there can only be Leo Tolstoy However I do not see How Stalin could be picked. He may have been a great leader during the WWII,But Nazis would not have gotten anywhere near moscow in the first place if Stalin did not almost distroy the Soviet army before the war himself.

Roman 11 July, 2008, 09:06 Judging by what is historically achieved versus what is paid for the achievement, Peter the Great seems on top. Judging by historical impact, it is Lenin. Judging by the state size, influence and might, it is Stalin. Putin is already a historical figure of great importance, whose real place in history will yet be judged. But some great people from culture shouldn't also be missed, like Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Tchaikovsky, Mendeleyev and Gagarin, because the thought, feelings, work and achievements of these people is what really make Russian culture so great. With all this in mind, it is also conceivable to say that the greatest character in Russian history is – the Russian people.

Robert (U.S.) 12 July, 2008, 05:36 One of the greatest and most interesting person in Russian history was the Mystic Grigori Rasputin. His death was suppose to have changed the victory in WW1. The German war machine could have taken Moscow very easliy . However there desperate need for oil sent thier war machine to the Russian oil fields. The biggest mistake the German made was to attack Russia in the winter. Puzziling that everyone knows not to attack Russia in the winter so this stragedy had allways puzzeled me.Maybe it was the desperation for oil.

john 12 July, 2008, 17:37 Robert, you are confusing WW1 with WW2 or even with the Napoleon war. Get of the drugs before you write. Rasputin had nothing to do with Germany loosing WW1. After comrade Lenin (installed with British help) made peace with Germany, the Germans moved their troops to the West and were set to win. However, after US have joined in 1918 Germany were forced to surrender.

Dany 13 July, 2008, 08:57 Russia had many great men throughout history. But it's greatest of all is Lenin. He planned the revolution perfectly and inspired revolutions in Germany and Hungary, fought for the common people and brought justice to all people in Russia, gave independence to these nation who didn't want to be a part of Russia anymore (Poland,Finland and Baltic states),won the civil war although the white army had help for several capitalistic states. It is really a shame he died age 53.He was a victim because he wanted to bring fair socialist society to Russia and World!
