Vitaly 26 August, 2008, 13:14 I'm sort of torn between Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great. One made the state big and another made it great.

Paul 26 August, 2008, 17:16 There are many great Russians. One that I admire alot is Marshall Zhukov, the greatest general of World War 2. The world owes alot to him and other Soviet soldiers for freeing Europe from Hitler. Unfortunately, because the cold war began right after World War 2, many people in the West do not know of Zhukov or his important contributions. However, even Dwight D. Eisenhower recognized Marshall Zhukov as the greatest general in the struggle against fascism.

mounir 27 August, 2008, 20:48 having lived the disasterous years of the yeltsin era,and the breed of oligarchs that was tearing down the russian nation. having detected from day one ,the mantel and the aura of vladimir putin. there is in this great man ,a lot of charles degaulle,in his love of his country,a sense of mission,a depth of analysis,a knowledge of the history and a respect to historical and geographical interlinks.in putin you detect an aversion,a touch of timidity towards politicians and political process.at the same time a steely will to get things done in an orderly, efficient manner.the task of redressing russia from the oligarchy of the 90's,and the communists throughout the whole century - the ones being desendants of the other,as described by soljinestin - was a huge enterprise. the faith that putin has ,must be the guiding light, and inspirator.who else would have such faith as to say to a mountain "move you from here".the animated spirit of christ can guide such soul in its march.too many victories he has achieved.too many wait to be started.the road is long.but, this man will be greater than peter ,wiser than catherine, more loved, than feared.far worthy of respect and admiration than any of his contemporaries.the blessed land of russia has suffered for hundred years.her son :vladimir putin will redress this nation for centuries to come.

Dragash 30 August, 2008, 21:30 The greatest Russian in history? This would probably be someone who saved Russia from complete destruction and national cataclysm. There were five such persons in the course of Russian history: Alexander Nevsky, Ivan Grozny, Kutuzov, Stalin and Putin. Which one among them ranks the highest? Oh, I have no idea. Does it really matter?

Massimiliano 30 August, 2008, 21:36 It's a difficult question because Russia has had a plenty of great persons. As from 20th century, Lenin has been able to catch Marx's culture and create a new economic system. In policy, he has carried on Russia the revolution and that's been most important. When he died, Stalin lasted his job, much as he has done some mistake. According to me Stalin was more marxist than Lenin, for he wanted to introduce communism in everywhere and with each way. If Lenin had been in the second world war, he wouldn't have had Stalin's courage. These two men have left a lot of culture and well-being in Russia. From time to time somebody forgets it and this shouldn't happen.

Andrey 31 August, 2008, 10:28 According to their weight in Russian and Wolrd's history no doubt that Lenin, Stalin and Peter The Great are on the top of the list. Everybody likes Tolstoy, Gagarin and Tchaikovsky, even Fedor Emeluamenko but they did not change the world and russia but the first three did.

Robert 31 August, 2008, 18:49 Sergei Rachmaninov was an amazing man and the finest composer of the twentieth century. He and his wonderful music will still be alive in people's hearts long after the politicians have been forgotter. Lenin was Russia's most formidible politician. Had he survived to complete his work, The Soviet Union would have been a finer, much more productive, more powerful and altogether better place.

MaliRadojica 1 September, 2008, 09:35 So many people from West that love Russia are confused with Russia's love towards Stalin. You say he is a butcher, Jack the Ripper. Well, this shows that you do not know real Russian feelings and souls. What Russians (and Serbs) love in Stalin, Putin, Ivan the Great is their might, their liberation of Russian lands, their victory over West. Whar every nation desires is to be free and proud, and not occupied. Greetings from Serbia to Great Russian People.

Timothy Paul Walsh 1 September, 2008, 10:10 May I say that Russia has one founding father who Russia owes a glorious debt. His name is Prince Vladimir of Kiew (St.Vladimir) and without him we would not have the Great Russians such as Peter the Great, Tolstoi, Dmitri Shostokovich, Father Papon, Dostoievski, Csar Alexandr II, Mikhail Tal, Vladimir Askenashey, Diagelev, Osip Mandelstam, Mistoslav Rostropovich Rostropovich, Gogol and lastly in sadness and peace, rest dear departed soul- Alexandr Soltzenitzen. So many names but really making one person, the strange and wondrous Russian idea, cognition and genuis of all the Russians (hence my bestowal of my choice upon Prince Vladimir) Pasternak and St.Czarevich Alexei deserve a mention for the nakedness of a soul in the midst of tragedy. Apres la tragedie, a new Prince among men Premier Ministre, Mr. Vladimir Putin, a Great Russian for this age. These and other Russians were born for Greatness, we homage there example.
