Dino 5 September, 2007, 13:38 No Way.Its doesn't matter what democracy's you live in. Some only "Appear" to be more free and fair, than others. Voting on the internet for the "Most Popular" candidate (NOT the electoral vote!) Is the ONLY free and fare way to vote! It will never happen because politicians can't cheat the system.

Aardvark 5 September, 2007, 16:32 they might be free but unlikely to be fair. The progovernment parties will get better access to mass media. Russian economy is getting better, so people rae likely to cast their ballots for those proKremlin groups.the fact remains though that the opposition is stiffled, probbably out of habit

Margo 5 September, 2007, 17:34 @ Dino Voting on the internet is EXACTLY the way to cheat and this is a well known fact. You should inform yourself better.

TheDirector 5 September, 2007, 17:49 The election should be fair and autonomous allowing freedom of intellectual representation from political parties in modern Russia. The best manifesto for the people as a whole would obviously win. There should be a revision of funding for political parties for the Duma Elections. The Russian public needs to be inclusive in the election process. Electronic Voting should also be introduced in Modern Russia. All Political parties must have their manifesto approved by an independent audit and ethics committee before the election.

Golo 5 September, 2007, 18:50 I'm sure some groups will be discouraged from participating. But nothing to serious or forceful. About the same way Communist Parties in the U.S. would have been "discouraged" in the 20th century.

Dino 5 September, 2007, 19:09 Hey "Margo" what color is the sky in your little world? Let me ask you this too.do you do any kind of internet banking? I make thousands of dollars in stock trades over the internet.NOT even once have I ever had problems NEVER! The US Stock exchanges alone make over 1 trillion dollars of trades every day of the week over the internet. How hard could it possibly be, to to calculate a few thousand measly votes, every election cycle! I will never vote in the USA again until they allow internet voting, no more hanging shads, and mis places ballots.VOTER fraud! The Internet is ROCK solid and NO cheating!

Sverant 6 September, 2007, 11:23 I feel the voting will be fear and free, The atmosfera before election is good and alst the TV and newspapers seems to be fear about all parties so far. but i dont like this "border" on 7 %. This is to high. I understand it have to be somthing but in my oponion it would be more democratic if it was 3 or 4. Some traditional parties and forces wil never reach this. Like the agrarian party and also this "oposition" group to the right.

Aardvark 6 September, 2007, 15:51 The WashPost' Dana Millbank had this observation made some time ago: "His ( Bush) actions have less to do with the left vs. right than with his embrace of many of the ideas contained in the movement known as "communitarianism," which places the importance of society ahead of the unfettered rights of the individual." Wouldn't the same hold true about the Kremlin? Given, the vast majority of Russians seem to be behind the government and its policies. But what seem to worry people outside Russia is the fact that the opposition whatever small not seem to be given an opportunity to speak, to unfluence and to act - the 7% election barrier seem to a testament to that.

george 7 September, 2007, 10:14 Hopefully yes! There is now 'true' democracy now in Russia, maybe not the US style one, with pomp and show, huge fund raising dinners or TV debates. But a democracy where parties having different views of the future take part in an elections. After all what is democracy ? -Where people participate in ensuring their own well-being and thats the situation now very much evident in Russia!

Margo 7 September, 2007, 15:14 @ Dino Don't tell me you believe the last 2 elections in the US were really "free" and transparent?! Have you ever read anything on the subject? Saying that no cheating is possible through electronic voting means you know nothing about how these things work. For what regards the rest, I am sorry, but your statements are so childish they are not even worth an answer. It would be just a waste of time.

maiko 7 September, 2007, 16:10 Free election in Russia what a joke - you Russians are BORN SLAVES, TRYING TO ENSLAVE OTHER FEE POEPLE. Your number is diminishing rapidly - 750 000 Russians die avery year, your population is shrinking and you still trying to play an 18th century empire - built by the czars of Russia ALL OF THEM GERMANS - how pathetic. By the way, your recent show of military strength was simply fun to watch.

Margo 7 September, 2007, 18:46 @ Maiko A very similar text, almost by the word, was already written few weeks ago. Why you people avoid discussing topics in a civilized way and use this forum just to spit out your venom? Your words are not only shameful, but they also show how shallow and pathetic YOU are. Racism and hatred are typical characteristics of narrow-minded, ignorant and devious people. Shame on you.

Al 8 September, 2007, 00:16 I think they will be free but not fair, I have never seen an election that was fair. Some groups will have good ideas but they will be shoved out by the monied parties in the race. Just like in America. Simple as that.

Daniel 8 September, 2007, 04:11 These elections will be a big test for Putin and the EU will be watching very closely I think it's stupid that people who leave political parties will loose their own seats, not to mention they can't form blocs to compete better, plus the 7% threshold is quite high. I just hope that the LDPR doesn't get any seats, there's nothing "Liberal" or "Democratic" about the party.
