Will Russia's Duma election be free and fair?
inga 29 November, 2007, 22:43 Is Russia is a democracy.? Well to be a so called Democracy their must be these facts. 1.Pro usa puppet government which takes orders from America. Pervez MUSHARRAF great democrat 2. American military bases 3. support of population must be under 50% no European president has over 40% support. Bush 25% support. 4. must always support America in everything she does. So i guess Russia is not Democracy, 85% support for Mr Putin, Russia is sovereignty country not colonize like Europe which doesn't stand up to Europe on any import issue. The south America will tell you what Usa democracy really is just ask them they know it well. Most of the anti Russian comments are from east Europe which blames Russia for everything, they cannot take responsibility for their own failures. Russia will have a government RUSSIANS want and not what WEST wants.

Eric 30 November, 2007, 17:11 I just watched your report on the provisions being made so Russians living in the United States can vote. That is outstanding! When my family and I (all US citizens) lived abroad in the 1980s and 1990s, there was no provision for US citizens abroad to go vote. Not even in the US embassy or consulate. Perhaps military personnel had more opportunities, but we were not in the military and we were told that the only way for us to vote was to contact the town in the US where we last were registered to vote, to ask them to send us a paper "absentee" ballot, mark that ballot, and send it back before the election deadline. This is, first of all, extremely inconvenient, and second of all, many people may never have registered to vote in the US prior to moving abroad. Some people were too young when they left the US and reached voting age abroad - for one thing. Other people simply never voted when they had the opportunity before. But since the US apparently made no provisions for its citizens abroad to exercise their right to vote, people never registered in the US simply are denied that right of citizenship. I don't know if possibly this situation has changed in the last 15 years or so. Perhaps the US has improved provisions for its citizens abroad; I don't know. In any case, at least as far as I am aware, Russia today is doing a better job for its citizens abroad than the US did when I was living outside the US. So perhaps US officials who are accustomed to lecturing the world on how to be democratic should shut their mouths and listen for a change. Regards, Eric

Marzipan6 1 December, 2007, 03:05 There was a national election in Australia last weekend. The Prime Minister and government of more than 11 years standing was voted out of office. No opposition personalities were arrested in the lead-up. No rallies were banned. No one was denied access to the media. And after the results were in, the outgoing Prime Minister sincerely congratulated the man who defeated him at the polls. The incoming Prime Minister paid sincere tribute to the public service of his predecessor. Over the past week, the mechanics of change of government has have functioned smoothly, peacefully, politely. No one had hysterics; no one rioted; no one was arrested; no one was banned. This is democracy. Whatever it is that plays out in Russia and that is called by the meaningless Putin-invented nonsense term of "sovereign democracy" has much more in common with that cynical Soviet invention, "people's democracy".

Лютик 12 March, 2011, 08:29 Lets hope so.. but lets face it, witch ever way it goes, Russia news should still check Israel related news and opinions twice before releasing it...
Israel is attaked daily by terrorists (Arabs tried to eliminate Israelies with england "donated weapons" and  when they moved in on to theyre legitimae territory for the first time in 2 thousand years after being rejected world wide as a state for years... just see Englands corruption and story toward Israel by it self) and nobody sayd anything about the missiles thrown at Israel by the arabs, but when they react countering the terrorists that missiled schools and supermarkets every day all the time for years they are treated as terrorists and so on and every body attack Israel for being "inhuman" against "inocent people"
Im not israeli nor do i have anything to do with them... its just unfair not to notice what hapens : )
I hope the next President of Russia is legaly elected. Just bring world wide assotiations of elections and youll get democracy fully
the fact that Paraguay in latin America got a people elected president without fraud is due to a assotiation (witch i dont know the name of) came to that country to chech elections and votes... if they didnt come corruption would continue... just check what he sayd about United States of America when he went to Vietnams war Museum... he really represents his people

Richard 22 March, 2011, 15:07 I find it absolutely amazing as to how people from the West continue to dictate to others that democracy has to follow that of the West. Do these people not realise that in each country live different people of different races, traditions and cultures and that democracy in their country follows on what they believe in line with their beliefs. Russia will continue to be democratic, free and fair in its own way. People from England and USA - look in your own back gardens first before throwing the first stone. Your systems are not democratic and not perfect so don't dictate to Russia and others. By the way, get the hell out of Lybia, Afghanistan Iraq Palestine and others.

Richard 22 March, 2011, 18:15 Marzipan6 - you mentioned in your brief about no one banned from the media amongst other matters outlining that this is democracy and the way Russia must follow. But, hang on a little and let us rewind events and let us talk of democracy and all that ..... do you recall how the Georgians were slaughtering the South Osetians - ethnic cleansing I think it is called. Russian was the only country to provide welcome support to help free these people from onslaught of the western supported regime of Georgia. A mother and daughter were about to be interveiewed on Fax TV/News (USA) - survivors of this brutality - rescued by Russia - and the TV station cut the interview before it started preventing them from their freedom of speech. Is this democracy? Ian Smith Prime Minister of Rhodesia was led into a trap by Harold Wilson Prime Minister of England for peace talks. Smith was to be arrested but he escaped. Is this democracy?

canobs 8 December, 2011, 00:19 Real DEMOCRACY does not exist (especially in US) as permanent regional citizens committees would be required so that they participate (by vote, referendum or otherwise) in all important decisions.___ Actual Fake democracy (representative not participative) have decisions made by Lobbeyists, Multinational companies, Banks and rich leaders financing the candidates and election campaigns, certainly not the workers and taxpayers______GOLOS is a US sponsored organization (NationalEndowment for Democracy, led by McFaul and Soros) with mission to start protest groups destabilize, and fabricate tricks to declare frauds, using the excuse of being an NGO operating in many countries undwer different names, in Bosnia (Yugoslavia,) was named the OTPOR movement.

John (unregistered) 27 February, 2012, 20:40 Dear Al

Listening to your debate about Putin’s speech in which he wants to defend the fatherland ,it reminds me of my days in the CCCP during the sixties and seventies how Russians very quickly referred to their fear  of its neighbours (this of course was motivated strongly by Stalin).

My understanding of Russian History and experience of “RUSSIA” is very different .The Russians always only had themselves to fear and always easily dealt with its neighbours far beyond its ethnicity and cultural limits .Historically one example ; had Stalin not sided with Hitler and signed the Ribentoff agreement only to stab it’s Slavonic brothers in the back ,but sided with all the Nations who were under threat from Hitler (he of course changed his stance ,but only after he had given the momentum to Hitler ,of course Chamberlain was just the same) ,History would have turned out very differently and more than likely many millions of lives would have been saved .

Likewise the Napoleonic war and the WWI was attributed to the abuse of TZARIST Russia and its entourage who robbed and betrayed the Russian people “the haves and the have not’s” – a reminder of today .During Tsars time there was a direct rail link to Nice with its own Basilica and the many Mansion surrounding it ,”the Winter Capital of Russia” – today we have Londongrad and the Many Mansions again in UK and around the World ,the many Super Yachts paid by the people of Russia who gave their blood for it .Rings a BELL ????

Whilst I believe that Putin was probably the only sensible choice to take Russia out of one madness in to another with the help of some close “FRIENDS…Oligars who fleeced the Russian Commonwealth” ,his rhetoric is reminding me of dangers for Russia and World Peace . Of course there is a reminder of pre – Bolshevik Revolution when the Country was thrown in to chaos with all the Political Parties and only the ruthless won the day.

What do you think.

Best Regards,

John – United Kingdom

Is Putin the ONLY person who can ran Russia?  I know from my little Russian history that Russians like strong leaders as in the past.  This is the 21st Century and from what I can see very soon he will not leave.  He spent 2 terms of 4years each and now the new term is 6years.  Wow,  This sort of thing only happens in Africa and the third world but to happen in Russia is unbelievable.  Russians should not be proud of what is happening.  He has been in power now for over 12years,  he should go and let someone else from his party take over.  This will show maturity.  I do not care if he pulls the strings in the background but he should be away from the public glare.

I hope no one takes offence but this is my opinion.  I love Russia!
