Andrey 19 November, 2008, 18:51 I think ??? is not less known than NHL right now abroad, Tretyak and Fetisov with Bykov has done a great job, the stadions are crowed in every cities exept Moscow where the clubs play, people are very interested in a new league and we all hope for great playoff games this season, I guess it will be the most unpredictable championship in our hockey history, too many great teams great rivals.

Lavy 26 November, 2008, 13:22 All sports are highly commercialised now! The day KHL offers more money to the players and has a higher viewership appeal, that day it would be premier Ice hockey league in the world. After all more money attracts more talent and vice versa.! However NHL has the first come advantage, but that is not impossible to beat.!!

Alan 10 December, 2008, 16:24 Actually, except for a few 'cult like' fans the NHL is not all that popular in the USA. Unlike American Football, baseball and the National Basketball Assoc, university level American football/basketball the NHL has no lucrative national television contract. It is broad casted locally but does not bring in anywhere near the revenue other sports bring in a national contract. I would bet if you asked who won the last Super Bowl (American Football Championship) or Baseball World Series, most Americans would probably know. If you asked who won the last Stanley Cup, they be clueless.

saintor 30 December, 2008, 22:44 The difference's tremendous at least concerning financial deals. The slot between Ottawa and Pittsburg is many times less than between Salavat and Dynamo Riga.

Rangers Fan 14 February, 2009, 07:26 I would love to see the KHL rival the NHL. Imagine a one-game playoff every year between the Stanley Cup winner and the Gagarin Cup winner.

Gene Hopkins 18 May, 2009, 23:09 I cannot comment on KHL vs NHL at this time. Congratulations to the Russian national team on your championship. My concern right now is the Pittsburgh Penguins. (I live in San Francisco but was raised in Pittsburgh). Crosby and Malkin are a dynamic duo. Go Penguins.

Tom 27 July, 2009, 22:05 It would be possible to rival the NHL, but it would take several years. The key would be to keep the local talent there (out of the NHL). Even if there is a discrepancy in pay levels, the best players will want to play against the best. They just will not do it for half the money....maybe 80 - 90%.

Joe 21 September, 2010, 03:35 Too early to talk about challenging NHL while KHL is yet to become popular in Russia itself. Do you know how many people there are only starting to discover hockey for themselves? I would say in terms of popularity as a league it is at the moment about 15% (last year it was only 10% and 5% the year before), and it's been spreading crazy fast. I would not be surprised to see big crowds of footbal supporters changing their preference to hockey in the near future. So big potential there moneywise. And should a couple of north european clubs join KHL, then it will prevail simply by a number of fans.

drccroucher 11 January, 2011, 11:27 They are two worlds apart. I don't see too many North American players moving to Russia to play hockey. It's usually the other way around. They could be just as successful as the NHL but will never compete in the same market. Who knows the NHL might not even be around in the next 10 years! And the way that those young Russians beat up on the Canadians at the World Juniors this year, I can see an even brighter future for Russian players in the NHL. Greatest COLLAPSE or Greatest COMEBACK in World Junior History? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBwmSYuvQSU
