Does NATO make the world more secure?
Teodor 11 August, 2008, 06:32 I'm a Romanian and I love my country and its people. Additionally, I'm first to acknowledge that the dismantling of the Varshaw Pact was not the beginning of a new era of peace, to the contrary! NATO s promises made to Russia not to expand eastward were soon broken, the animosities of the people from Eastern Europe towards the defuncted Soviet Union were exploited through the propaganda from massmedia so much so that adhering to NATO was sold as a good thing, more protection from a renewed agression from Russia, more overall security, joining the EU as a way to a more prosperous life. Hum, not so my friend, not so! In the grand global chessgame, peoples lives count nothing, only the agenda! Common people are used just like cannon fodder for the interests of the elite. Just recently we have witnessed how Georgia's tirant, at the signal of head master NATO, UE, he attacked innocent people in South Ossetia. My feelings of solidarity go out to those afflicted people. Russia's response was well justified in that case. Now, to answer the question, NO, NATO does not make the world more secure! To the contrary! USA is today what Germany was during Hitler's reign, with the 911 a reflection of the Reichstag fire! The old trick: problem-reaction-solution. History will go in cycles my friend for as long as the large masses will not wake up from the trance. While as a general rule I do not trust visible leaders, they all have a script to follow, I must admit that Russia's leadership under Putin has proved its worth on the international stage. Good for you if indeed Putin and now Medvedev are leaders of the people and for the people, as at least the appearences suggest. This world is a mess! Will Russia play a more ballanced approach as compared to other totally out of ballance powers (USA, Israel, UK etc.)? A hard task! The world is in desperate need of sensible people to stop the global maddness. Will Russia pick up the task?

Teodor 11 August, 2008, 07:08 Stefan cel Mare, Mircea cel Batran here. You make me laugh when you say that "Nelson Mandela proudly proclaimed his treason for the system and he bravely fought for the creation of a just and unified country and he succeeded." Who was in control of the big business in South Africa during the Apartheid and who is in control of it now, huh? Same people, same big corporations, same banks! The difference is that now people believe they live in a democracy and have no visible enemy to fight against. In fact they live in the same kind of prison like before, only that without any apparent bars. But once they try to step beyond the invisible line, they get whipped back into the prison area. Hey, don't you live in Romania, just like me? Do you really have any freedom and democracy here? No, we are not even an independent country any more but a province in the new empire, UE. We are totally controlled financially, economically, politically. Communist times were like nothing compared with the level of state controll we experience now. We are worse than the slaves of old. At least, back in the old times, a master was responsible for his slave. Now, under the UE tyranny we are worse than that, slaves without a visible master. So please, spare me this kind of nonsense. Sober up man, will you? De?teapt?-te române!!!

Kiwi 11 August, 2008, 11:45 Good on you Russia for helping civilians in Georgia, and for standing your ground with the UN negotiations your country has behaved sensibly in a tricky situation. The small group of gangters (aka neocons) in Washington are behind so many atrocities trying with the EU and UN to form the New world order for the world. Go to Alex Jones (one sensible American) website http://www.infowars.com as the American public are awakening to Rockefellars/Rothschild,Bilderberg group,Council on foreign Relations,Trilateral Commision,Project for the new american century, and many others hell bent on a control grid for the human race.DEFEAT THE NEW WORLD ORDER.

Michael 11 August, 2008, 13:27 NATO, makes the world a lot more unstable. Russia makes the world stable, I am an American, and I am ashamed of my countries leadership, we have become the ones trying to start all the wars and conflicts. It will take Russia alone to stop my corrupt government.

Russia Rules 11 August, 2008, 17:34 Nato makes the world LESS secure, it increases the chance of world conflict by multiplying the threashold points. Imagine if Georgia was now part of NATO, US would have to side with war criminals. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE RUSSIA !

Enrique 12 August, 2008, 02:34 With the fall of the USSR the Russian Federation tried to engage with NATO and the European Union as much as possible, close to full integration.but it was rejected by the US as a friendly Russia means less need for American troops in the European Continent. Tension with Russia guarantees the presence of US troops in the European Protectorate as an excuse for keeping the military bases and for the Dictator Bantz J. Craddock to continue as Supreme Commander of all Western and Central European Armies. A friendly Russia, and more a friendly German-Russian economic interdependence through an improved Partnership means US presence would e more difficult to justify in the European Continent.

Giusmar 12 August, 2008, 17:24 Yes NATO makes the world more secure AS LONG AS THERE ARE COMMERCIAL INTERESTS TO BE SAFEGUARDED. In Places where there are no interests in play, NATO doesn't give a damn! That's the reason why those nations in the southern hemisphere should constitute a counterbalance to NATO which could be called SATO - South Atlantic Treaty Organization - made up by the nations along the equator!

luka 14 August, 2008, 08:53 Don’t accept any “EU peacekeepers” Russians must be crazy if they accept any “EU peacekeepers”. We Serbians have very bad experience with them on Kosovo. They came there against any international law. And favoritism is their other name. If You Russians want troubles in future, just accept them. You did good job as peacekeepers all this years, you can continue it. And almost all EU countries are evil NATO

Radu 15 August, 2008, 13:42 Now we know why NATO is needed! IF Georgia had been a NATO member state none of this would have happened. I can only hope Russia is not crazy enough to move onwards to the Baltics, Poland or any other "sensitive" place. The sooner those American missile sites go up, the better. WELL DONE PUTIN! You have proven to the whole world that the US is not mad!!! WELL DONE COMRADE! We now all know exactly who and what we are dealing with. Long live the free and democratic state of Georgia

Onunaki 16 August, 2008, 08:21 Absolutely not! NATO has now been proven to be nothing but a terrorist group. Why does it still exist when Warsaw Pact no longer exists? Why is it expanding and why does its expansion seek to encircle Russia? Who is exactly the threat? Please don't insult my intelligent by telling me its Iran.

Paul 17 August, 2008, 05:44 Why does Russia not join NATO? That would solve all the paranoia problems. And now you are not bent on exporting "world revolution", why should it be against your interests so to do?

BOB 17 August, 2008, 08:01 Radu is spot on, If Georgia were a NATO member russia would have never even thought about ivading. It is important that other European countries join Nato, to stop this from ever happening agian. So what if they circle russia, It just proves that no one trusts russia, We all have seen or herd this conflict before, And I believe it was In the 20th century when the soviet union did the same thing. So go on Russia and Putin go on and show us all how much u have changed.

Sam 17 August, 2008, 08:26 NATO does not make Europe secure in any way. If they think Russia would bow before them, they are mistaken. They would rather end humanity before that happens. What is NATO? an extension of the white house policy,What is the White house policy? What ever Bush and his cronies say. So far we had watch the white house policy in action all over the world from Serbia to Lebanon.Which is basically turn a blind eye to what ever their allies are doing. Be it shelling of cities in Lebanon or South Ossetia. This has now backfired on them big time. The solution was there from the very start when the USSR collapsed.Be a friend of Russia, make sure that the ethnic minorities left in individual countries are well treated, and remain neutral. However their solution of surrounding Russia with a military alliance and turning blind eyes to the atrocities committed, this would only lead to one thing. However,One thing I did notice is how radical the new NATO countries are compared to the old. War in Iraq, apart for the UK no one else was keen on it apart for east Europeans. Presidents that ran to stand with Saakashvili in Tibilisi did not include a single western one. They seemed to know how to try and solve the problem and head to Moscow instead.

David 17 August, 2008, 13:30 NATO is a smokescreen for USA to do as she wishes, when she wishes and to whom she wishes. So, the answer to your question - NO! NATO should be disbanded immediately. Europe should create its own equivalent and furthermore should any country within europe want aid from the USA (military that is) that country needs to seek authority from the EU parliament first before letting USA onto European soil.

Harry 17 August, 2008, 15:23 In my opinion NATO should be renamed to North American Terror Organization. The collapsing US economy needs obscene amounts of money to keep kite-flying, mostly paid by oil producing and export oriented countries still billing in USD. As we have seen with Georgia, to avoid filing bankruptcy they will even try to start a war by covert ops. Thanks to quick and adequate response by Russian forces situation seems under control for the moment. Public opinion is just the opposite of published opinion in Germany now.
