Does Russia endanger itself and the rest of the world by helping Iran build a nuclear power plant?
Tim 27 July, 2007, 19:09 The world is clamouring for Energy and Iran has all the rights to install, run and benefit from the additional energy a nuclear power plant will bring it.However, Russia has to safeguard itself should a North Korea like situation develop, like having regular inspections with IAEC. One thing is for sure, a mechanism has to be found , in quick time, for something like an Intl. reprocessing centre. All other efforts including Missiles, radars and wars are just short term OR time wasting diversionary tactics, that in time will spawn hundreds of similar 'Irans'.

avatar 27 July, 2007, 22:56 russia need friends now-enemies-that is british and anglosaxons are surrounding russia. iran and russia. If russia follishly stop busher plant work or does not support iran a=verses the west then russia will be doomed as well because then resurgent west ,which has ben ploting against russia too, will have ecicircled and weakned russia.and russia will have no friend to look to when it is under pressure from the west. thertefore russia must support all the countries who have stod fagainst angloamerican evil -only by this method russia and other countries can maintain their indepdence. Al 28 July, 2007, 02:33 I don't think so. Iran has pretty much kept tp itself for the last 1000 or so years and they have not been trying to create an empire like some countries have done and are doing. This paranoia about "the bomb" is getting really out of hand. Iran should be allowed as many reactors as is practical.

Ormoz 28 July, 2007, 15:45 The government of Iran came to power in 1979 by the west and for serving the west. But this is supposed to be a secret. The King of Iran had cancer and had to be replaced as a dictator who had not an old enough son to replace him. The government of Iran then has done all the dirty and covert jobs for US government that they didn't want to do themselves. Like breaking the UN embargo on passing weapons to the Bosnians in their conflict with Serbia. In Afghanistan in the 80's by helping and financing the American backed Mujahedin and now the Iranian are again helping and financing the American select and a former employee of BUSH, president Hamed karzai. Also the Production of Afghanistan's Heroin which has increased thanks to Americans and is being transported through Iran as it was in the 80's. Right now the US and Iranian governments are installing an Islamic government in Iraq. Ayatollah Hakim the most powerful man in Iraq is a puppet of the Iranian and US government. So is the Moghtada Sadr who is his counterpart recieving money from the Iranian government and the US will accept the one who takes the power as the new Iraqi leader. (part of this post has been removed as it is against the rules) when it comes to Iran having neuclear bombs and rockets, Iranian government or Islam has taken the role of US's enemy and has replaced the Communism or the former Soviet Union. Thanks to them US can have a big army and a large defence budget which gives the American capitalists like BUSH and CHENEY a lot of profit and a few milion jobs. So this enemy must have "teeth" as well otherwise they become too little and there is no need for such big investment from the American side. So they (The Muslims) should have weapons to have some kind of balance. And the more dangerous their weapons the better the American people feel the need for a good defence!!! max 28 July, 2007, 20:33 The government of Iran looks after the interests of Iran and nobbody else's. It's behaviour since 1978 shows no agressive behaviour against anybody. On the contrary both the US and Israel have repeatedly threatened Iraq with bombing and regime change. Iran has structural social problems such a huge pool of young people and lopsided economic structure. (Huge amounts of crude little refining capacity) Russia is building a NPP in Bushehr. It should finish it in good time so as not to be accused as acting as a procrastinator. (The residue of the process will come back according to the agreement. Furthermore it cannot be hidden) Russia should not create another enemy state at its borders a la Poland (Ormoz's piece is both wrong on the facts and incoherent.)

harry 29 July, 2007, 06:42 Iran has the right to operate a Nuclear power plant and Russia every right to build it, as because if it doesn't,somebody else will! Only fly in the ointment - the Israeli Illegal Nuclear hoard, which gives everybody the desire and LEGAL RIGHTS to have a Similar hoard.Consider also the recent US-India nuclear DEAL.

JB 30 July, 2007, 03:00 Every country should have nuclear power plants, it's a relatively clean source of energy because it doesn't release greenhouse gases. Even if Iran develop nuclear weapons, maybe it will only prevent they natural ressources to be stolen by USA.

Victor 30 July, 2007, 15:29 Why shouldn't they.??? Every other developed country in the world has them - either legally or illegally. Here I site Israel's "secret" hoard - not to mention that both India and Pakistan went nuclear, not so long ago. I agree with Harry.Consider the US-India deal!!!

sam 12 March, 2008, 07:43 Everyone has the right for peaceful use of nuclear energy even Iran. That is as long as they do not start a weapons program. As far as the weapons program goes,it does not exist since 2003 if you want to believe the CIA.

Vijay 12 March, 2008, 17:53 Let me make an educated guess - If and when Obama is on the verge of winning either the U.S Democratic party nomination or The presidential race itself, the war bugles will again be sounded. For no way will this Neo-con adventurers allow someone to become the C-I-C of the US armed Forces, who is not in line with their agenda! It is seriously time for Europe in general and US allies in particular to consider this! It does not matter if RF is endangering itself/rest of the world by supplying helping Iran, what matters is what standards have been applied to judge the following?- Whether Iran is really a "rogue" state? What really constitutes a "Rogue" state? If western standards are applied, then USSR was itself a rogue state, just before the time/during the time it was trying to develop Nuclear power/missiles/bomb/energy! If other standards are applied, then Iran is simply a state that is trying to diversify its energy sources and maybe/doubly maybe it's defense. However, its another matter altogether, whether technically it's equipped to manage its "peaceful" Nuclear programme and that's where RF can really help it! BTW, that observation about Bush and Bushehr.Hope not, never!

Sanjay 12 March, 2008, 20:11 Iran does not endanger Russia anymore than a nuclear armed gangster-state in pakistan. Iran is an ancient civilization, well versed in statecraft. The radical mullahs and the revolutionary guards are orders of magnitude saner than pakistani deobandi-wahhabi establishment. Nuclear-power to iran will not threaten israel or Russia. But NATO-financiers and Rusian-oligarchs want to isolate Russia and turn it against EU so that the ensuing division can be used to advance the concept of nuclear-primacy and eventually destroy the western civilization. Obama's color will be used as a sheep's clothing, a new cloak, to build the angel image of US around the world, an america full of hopes and promises. Comrade Wolf will become ever more lethal. Life will not be easy for Russian people.

Sam 13 March, 2008, 07:22 Vijay posted: What really constitutes a "Rogue" state? that is what I would like to know. Why are countries like Iran,North Korea,Syria,Venezula,Cuba etc Rogue States and yet Saudi Arabia or Israel not? After all Saudi Arabia has one of the worse human rights records in ths world so it cannt be that. Saudi Arabia is a cradle of terrorist and islamist fundamentalist in the world so again cannt be that. They have not Invaded or occupied the lands of other like Isreal and USA itself so again not that. The only thing I see is that the Rogue nations do not jump when USA tells them to. I am against anyone in an unstable region having nuclear weapons, basically the Middle east be it Iran,Syria or Israel which already has them by the way.

James 13 March, 2008, 13:07 There are two separate issues; nuclear energy and nuclear weapons. Every country has the right to develop and benefit from nuclear energy no matter what the US may or may not think about that. However that must be done in secure environment. All activities from mining to enrichment, use and waste disposal of nuclear materials need to be regulated globally. And those regulations should be enforced to prevent any miss use of nuclear materials. I do not think that at present any such regulated environment exists. Instead the US is using bully politics and threats based on speculations and gossips that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Nuclear energy is the only long term energy solution. It has to be made more safe and secure. Russia is doing nothing wrong by helping Iran to built nuclear power station. When it comes non proliferation of nuclear weapons I do not think Russia does the right thing. No actions are taken against countries that are US allies and developed nuclear weapons. Israel, Pakistan and India. On the other hand countries suspected of having or developing nuclear weapons and who are not within the US sphere of influence are being threatened, blackmailed and sabotaged. Non proliferation treaty has been prostituted. Russia’s participation in that treaty has no sense. By holding to the treaty Russia isolates itself. US still see Russia as enemy and have encircled it with military bases. US has expanded it nuclear potential while the treaty call for reduction. It is therefore in Russia interest that more countries outside the US sphere of influence possess nuclear weapons. That will enforce civilized behaviour on the US and increase global security. The fact is if Iraq had WMDs including nuclear weapons it would not be attacked.

Sanjay 13 March, 2008, 20:51 Sam Excellent points. Besides Arabia is where 15 of the 19 hijackers and their funds came from. Pakistan was the training ground. And yet, they remain the closest allies. Al-Qaida is the illegitimate evil child of US and Pakistan. It is their baby, their creation.

sam 15 March, 2008, 00:32 Al-Qaida's seeds were planted by the USA during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. They gave financial and military backing to the founder Azzam and later his replacement Osama. All for the greater good of the fight against communism. This is just a case of the frankenstein monster growing up and returning home. Do not think that building a nuclear power reactor for a sovereign nation,"rogue" or not can be even come near an irresponsible act like building and supporting a statless band of fundamentalist. We should not forget that Russia is strongly against Iran developing an enrichment program be it as a means of preventing it being used for a military purpose or simply business, as Iran will have to by Russian to supply the reactor. The truth however, even If Iran does develop a Nuke,It would pose no danger to Russia the same way neither the pakistani or Indian ones pose any danger to her.
