Europe has been freezing for nearly a week. But who is to blame?..
Gazza 13 January, 2009, 11:49 Who is to blame? This is a joke question, right? Lets recap the sequence of events shall we? Ukraine refuses to settle its gas account, then refuses to accept a rate increase in-line with market conditions. Without a contract in place, Russia reduces domestic deliveries to Ukraine, and Ukraine responds by stealing gas from the transit volumes already purchased by the EU consumers. The EU pipelines loose pressure, and Ukraine points the finger at Russia, and the western media Russo-phobes echo the same old 2006 propaganda crap about Russia being unreliable and using energy for blackmail. Ukraine then raises the stakes by shutting down the compressor stations and ceasing all deliveries to the EU, while blaming Russia. Yushchenko hoped to create a crisis and watch the EU turn on the Russians, discomforting Moscow, damaging its reputation as a trade partner, and also sticking the boot into Tymoshenko (one of his 2 main rivals). Its a pretty transparent power-play, but old pineapple-face has badly miscalculated (a little like the tie-eating Stalin-wannabee Saak) cuz noone is buying it. Gazprom wants to sell every last SCF of gas they can, why would they interrupt the flow of gas and loose $600M in sales? This time the EU has not openly blamed Russia because the Europeans understand a lot more about the shady criminal element running the Ukrainian gas industry, and they are fully aware that the Kiev routinely steals, are intentionally interrupting supply for political & financial gain. Russia has won a HUGE victory. EU and Russian inspectors are in place to verify Ukrainian compliance with their transit obligations, and any future silly games by Kiev will slapped down by the EU. No more holding the EU to ransom. Medvedev & Putin must be grinning their socks off!

joseph 13 January, 2009, 14:17 Ukraine is responsible,it has to pay the correct price,it is nomore a satallite of the russians ,it was her deciesion to join europe,pay the european price.that is the only logical answer.the transit price should be taken up with the europeans they want the gas ,they should negioate with ukraine for its price ,not the russians.

noe 13 January, 2009, 14:53 Ukraine goverment is very incompetent, this gas crisis could have been solved before the winter, but Ukraine is showing a complete lack of good will both to Russia and to the EU, no surprise! we all know yushenko is a pro-western puppet

Nico 13 January, 2009, 16:11 "Europe has been freezing"? Stay at the facts please. The people of some poor countries in the Balkan and in the center of Europe has suffered lac of gas for their households They are subject of a constant anti-Russian propaganda. Germany lasts on its reserves.With this Jevtuschenko & Co we see the same story as in the fall ol of Sjakasvilli, they lie and trust on the agreements with the US. Here it will go the same way or worser: liarstates do not function in itsself and will disappear.

Norman 13 January, 2009, 18:42 Though the Ukraine and Russia share a common alphabet and some cultural aspects, the Ukraine is a political and ecenomic mess. Stealing gas and refusing to forward it to EU nations shows how unstable and unethical the some people in the Ukraine really are ( like the government and it's supporters!) Russia needs those alternative oil and gas pipelines soon!

Vijay 13 January, 2009, 19:20 Why of course Europe itself!! If they have an alternative, please arrange for it...otherwise forget the Russo-Phobia and get practical about the whole affair. Who has the gas? - Russia Who has an antiquated transit system, an fart for a prez and a domestic quarrel to boot? - Ukraine. Where are the solutions? - Either a complete overhaul of the transit routes, so that politics dare not interfere with Business - that means privatisation of these routes/pipes and modernisation etc. OR New delivery routes such as those that are feasible and are supported by the country having those supplies = Russia, Such as Nord and South streams. OR Having gas from Algeria, Norway, or even Iran?? Well, the ball is in Europe's court with Yushchenko playing with it...

Johnny 13 January, 2009, 19:46 This is how you solve it, you tell the EU to contact Israel, and then they will contact the United States of Israel, who will then talk to the real proxy American government, the Autocratic Federal Reserve of Israel, who will then talk to the Ukrainian central bank of Israel, who will tell the puppet democracy to switch on the gas. You can shortcut this lengthy process by talking to the nearest Israeli sponsored terrorist organization, because they work directly for the Autocratic Federal Reserve of Israel, and are probably are standing next to the Ukrainian valves with T shirts saying, “lets break Russia’s economy by freezing those Europeans to death”. Alternatively look off the coast, the Autocratic Federal Reserve of Israel probably have a gas ship on its way already with gas... at twice the price. Ukraine, make sure you really know who your friends are… stupid!

Carola 13 January, 2009, 20:21 yes, you can say that we are subject of a constant anti Russian propaganda, but we really dont need any propaganda, we know the Russian well, we have survived 40 year of occupacy, the total devastation of our country. Look at the map, except for Austria, only the former EastEuropean countries are affected. Russia just dont want to let us live freely.

David 13 January, 2009, 20:24 Business is business, blackmail is blackmail, extortion is extortion and theft is theft. Ukraine is blatantly stealing this gas and it is the Ukranian gvt that needs to brought down. Before others start shouting about 'how greedy Russia is' first take a look at USA/England and Saudi Arabia, and secondly, consider someone doing business with you and then failing to pay for your services. Same principle. Ukraine is the thief and needs to be punished.

IMPERA 13 January, 2009, 21:36 I Believe the Ukraine is soley to blame they are reverting to the dirty tactics of the Pre Soviet era, this seems very strange that Ukraine would do something like this to enter the European Union or is it the likes of Brussels again trying to drive the wedge of west versus the east motive again like they did in the South Ossetian/Georgian war. I find this a deliberate attempt of Ukraine's Incompetence to show the west that Russia can still not be trusted in western eyes I fully sympathise with all the countries that are having a rather cold winter due to the malicious acts of Ukraine. I would love to see Russian gas and oil to fully bypass Ukraine and use the Belarusian route because that would be more productive and useful as well as the "Nord Stream" method from Russia to Germany route. This should be a great hint to Ukraine to stop cyphering and stealing gas from Russia and buy gas elsewhere. I fully praise the acts of Gazprom for sticking up for themselves during these highly turbulent and financial times. So finally it's like this if Ukraine was to buy 2000 Russian cars they would be responsible to pay for them in full if they paid only 79% of asking price they would not get that product.

Jean-Claude 13 January, 2009, 23:35 When will you realise that the gas crisis is an american made shame. The USA have two main adversaries. 1) Russia: Politicaly you don't get along too well; your natural ressources are still your owns. US multinational firms did not take over your economy. Militarely Russia is strong, credible and has more en more friends around the World. 2) If Europe was politicaly and economicaly the master of her own destiny, the USA will become a secondary class power. In 1970 an eminent newsman wrote this: Europe will be americanised or will never be (40 years later we see the result). That is why the US are creating troubles everywhere on the continent. They are behind the ukrainian governement refusal to pay the gas as every other nation do. They were behind the georgian invasion of Ossetia. They want that certain european nations to join NATO (even Turquie) and accept that crazy and useless anti-missiles'shield. Beside that they still keep military basee all over Europe on strategic locations. They pay thousands of prostitutes in all level of EU and european nations' governements. They do the same with the economy to protect their interests. Personnaly, I know America well and admire the way she take europeans for idiots and how much, they like it. Don't do any wishfull thinking Obama will change nothing on the geopolitic scene. Why sould he ! Governing idiots is so much easier than leading well educated citizen (Julius Cesar said that 2000 years ago). Just take good care of the russian people; tell ukrainians and their friends to go buy their gas in Alaska. Sincerely. JCM ;

Enrique 14 January, 2009, 03:44 I wonder why the Ukrainian Government causes so many problems to Europe if they say they want to be part of the European Union. What has the Ukrainian Government offered to Europe? Blackmail and Chernobyl. We, in Europe, have not received anything really valuable in exchange but problems from the Ukrainian Government. They behave like children who want to get attention. But I think perhaps the real reason is not political but economic given the state of the Ukrainian economy, so hardly hit by the economic downturn. With a recession under way after some years of recovery...back again to recession. The truth is Ukraine suffers the same ills as the Russian Federation (falling population, falling production) but aggravated. Given the present difficult situation it would be much, much better, for Ukraine and Russia to co-operate trying to survive instead of making problems to each other, worsening the problems.

Sam 14 January, 2009, 07:03 So now Ukraine is saying,we would not let the gas pass unless we are allowed to siphon gas out of the pipeline as we like. Why sign an document if the very same day you break the agreement. Ukraine wants to join EU,but is holding EU nations for ransom. It wants to join NATO, yet want charity aid from Russia in the form of energy at half the price others are paying.Its not as if Gazprom is not paying a kings ransom in transit fees to Ukraine. The Government of Ukraine is obviously unbalanced and crazy in its head.

RU 14 January, 2009, 10:53 Ukraine needs to pay European price for its gas. If Ukraine wants nothing to do with Russia then Russia should not be practically giving Ukraine free gas. Ukraine is run by nothing but a bunch of criminals with a direct hotline to the US white house siphoning off Russias resources.

Marzipan 14 January, 2009, 11:06 Don't know of any other trade fiasco of this magnitude anywhere else in the world. Everyone else seems to be able to solve their commercial differences rather more adequately. The fact that this shambles involves Russia must surely be pure coincidence.

fred 14 January, 2009, 13:46 @ jean-claude = YES ! this is one of the oldest political rule : dividing is ruling ! a last gift from Bush's administration : whatever is the outcome EU/Russia are poisoned ... unless USA has already stopped to finance Ukraine and they have no other choice than to ransom EU for surviving ... Ukraine is bankrupt , this poker bluff to have EU sending Billions to pretend Ukraine still exist as a "free" country !

Sam 14 January, 2009, 13:53 LOL, First time ever. A country want blackmail money. Unbelievable that a whole country's government are nothing but common crooks. Claiming to be allies of EU and want to join them.Yet saying if Russia does not give them gas, they would not let EU have any.Blackmail money. What are the chances of Ukraine joining EU? Hmm lets see.They were common crooks before getting into power and remained so.Orange revolution more like bandit revolution. This is worse then what the Somali pirates are doing by far.At least the Somalis are not letting whole of Europe to freeze for blood money.Cant pay so lets blackmail them for freebies. Seems to be that the usual folks who had in the past been so critical of Russia's handling of Ukraine had fallen silent.Really would love to hear their point of views on this issue cos it feel like I am having a monologue here.

Regular_John 14 January, 2009, 14:01 Ukraine is at fault the facts speak for themselves only a fool would challenge this. I have already commented on the In-context thread so I will not bore you by repeating myself. In addition to my earlier comments I want to say the following. The Ukrainians denied stealing EU gas but yesterday they tripped up over their own lying tongues when they stated that they can not sent the gas through the export pipe-line as it had been re- orientated for domestic use put simply during the dispute they used our gas for their own consumers and paid nothing now they need time to re-route the export only pipe-line back to how it should be export only. They also told us that this might leave some of their regions without gas, well pardon me if I shed no tears over that problem my sympathy lies with the tens of thousands of EU citizens spread across Europe who have been left to freeze for days because they did not receive the pre-paid gas sent in good faith by Russia. When the dust settles on this dispute the EU needs to take a good hard look at how Ukraine is governed we now know they can not be trusted as a transit country are they ready to join the EU?, “no way” they need to be put on notice clean up your act (if they can) or the door stays shut.
