Kosovo independence: is another Balkan war about to break out?
The Eighth Dormant 21 February, 2008, 20:45 I don't think there will be consequences on the Balkans, which are strictly controlled by Nato or EU bases. I think on the contrary that this precedent will be used for supporting other independence requests supported by strong powers, for example the one of Darfur, which has a similar situation.

Norman 21 February, 2008, 20:55 If not another Balkan war atleast major civil unrest! I believe the Kosovars did not take everything into account before their move for independence. I believe that Britain, France and the U.S. still hold a gudge against Serbia, from the 1990s Balkans conflict. The Serbians will not forget this too soon. Prepare yourself for some tough times.

Heartless 21 February, 2008, 21:47 Anyone recall Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon.? Anyone recall the 1000 years occupation by the US army in Afghanistan? Anyone recall the horrors of Vietnam? Anyone care about International laws, the GENUINE greviances of those that have lost a peice of their heart? As the saying goes," Break a man's leg, but don't break his heart!" AND HERE we are seeing the ripping apart of a Democratic nation's very soul - cruelly,by force, by false temptations.! The question should be - "How can a new war NOT break out?" BTW, best of luck to those 'gurus' at NATO, whose Bondsteel may soon require 'hearts of steel'. But aren't they experienced in that?

Marko 21 February, 2008, 22:23 Co-operation, consensus, peaceful bargaining, and compromise is the only way that two sides can settle disputes. If NATO arms Albanians, and if EU doesn't consult Serbs, obviously there will be winners and loosers. Serbs have been left out of decisions since 1990s, and the whole system put into Balkans has been against their interests. Pitying one side against the other will not create peace. I don't think Serbs want war, nor do they have means to wage war. What could happen though, is the further crackdown by West on Serbs, unrest among the populace, etc. War is unlikely, but possible, because the West could use the unrest to further militarily engage. This will of course, also depend if Serbs get any support to counter western-Albanian influence. So it all depends how stonger players will choose to deal with situation. As far as the path EU, NATO have chosen, it seems that peace is not in their interests.

Bane 21 February, 2008, 22:28 We are deeply sorry for everything what was going on tonight. This is NOT the whill of the citizens of Serbia! We will never accept Kosovo independence, but this is not the way to express it. Those are small number of hooligans who are destroying their own capital. Serbia will be happy and beautiful country when these m*ron* finally end up in jail. Thank you for objectivity!

Goran 22 February, 2008, 00:23 I am very very very sorry for the incident that happened to your crew today. Please tell them to put Russian flag on their clothes. They are Serbian brothers and they should not be treated that way. What happened in Belgrade is just a result what the West has been doing to the Serbian people for years. If the Serbian government closed those embassies right after their countries proclaim support for the Kosovo independence, this would not have happened. Serbs are hurt so much because they see there is no law that the West respects. International law is dead. God help Serbia. Thank you Russia for your support, and learn from Serbian precedent. If you are weak you will be the next.

Macedonian 22 February, 2008, 00:24 I think we do need a war, cleanup time. Russia, Macedonia, Greece and Serbia need to cleanup these drug running thugs. The orthodox Christians need to take back what is ours. Albanians have Albania and can go back there. I'm 100% that our Bulgarian neighbors will come help the cleanup as they just love Shiptars. Greece has 1 million of them there, trust me they will start something there soon.

SrpskiCrnogorac 22 February, 2008, 00:56 Yes, and I expect the following developments: Kfor will try to build a state border between Kosovo and Serbia while using concrete and fences. Serbian forces will try to avoid this, and we will see the first military clashes. Serbian forces will win these clashes and Kosovo becomes partitioned. Kfor will accept this, but the Albanians will then start their unrest, and this will be a crucial moment whether Kfor will be able to get that unrest under control or not. If not, then the unrest will spill over to albanian settlements in South Serbia and Macedonia. At that point Serbian military will fully engage in the conflict, and this in accordance with the military agreement with Nato, because Serbian forces are allowed to enter Kosovo if unrest in Kosovo leads to unrest in other parts of Serbia and if Kfor is not able to stop it. Then we will be at another crucial point. Kfor and Albanian terrorists are no serious threat to serbian army. The West will then be in a very uncomfortable situation, because their military dominance in the region is not based on the small Kfor troop in kosovo, but on the large scale war they fought against Serbia in 99. The difference between 99 and now is of course Russia. I think, that Serbia and Russia agreed on all this. The West won´t be allowed to attack Serbia again like in 99, and therefore the NATO will have to leave Kosovo.

SHOWTIME 22 February, 2008, 01:26 I love seeing this happen! I feel absolutely no sympathy for them. For years they would take advantage of everyone. I don't understand why they are shocked that no one wants to be with them. The fact is, it is their own fault. They deserve every last bit coming to them.

Neil 22 February, 2008, 02:46 Speaking of Kosovo, lets tell the truth, Kosovo was always Albanian land. Where do you think Albanians came from, Russia? Serbs came from Russia. Russians kicked them out of Russia because they're too much trouble. Serbians are always looking for trouble and occupying other nations' territories. Don't forget what they did to Croatia, Bosnia, and even Montenegro they occupied for many years. Albanians always lived in Kosovo. Kosovo was always Albanian land until the Serbs came and occupied them. They are Barbarians.

Jadranka 22 February, 2008, 03:32 Bane, read once more your post! "Those are small number of hooligans who are destroying their own capital. Serbia will be happy and beautiful country when these m*ron* finally end up in jail." What are you talking about? Apologize to whom why on this forum? I think you made a mistake - put this apologize on B92 forum (Serbian TV)- it belongs there, not on RT. Leave these "hooligans", and as a polite man send apologize to NATO and EU, because "we are the bad guys". Also, did you forget what's happened on 5th of october, 2000? Democratic destroying of our capital and not only the our own capital, but the whole country. After these two facts, "hooligans" are the lambs in comparison with NATO, EU, and Serbian "democrats"! Serbian citizens are full of anger, so who knows what's the next step - although we are the small nation, we are brave, too.

Nick (American Friend) 22 February, 2008, 03:36 It is very interesting to see US ambassador to the UN Zalmay Khalilzad asking Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon to react to happenings in Serbia's capital Belgrade. How did US Politicians not think about UN when they attacked Serbia in 1999 or Iraq in 2003? Very strange. I think that US totally lost control and unfortunately got EU into their mess.

Goran 22 February, 2008, 03:46 SHOWTIME, and who wants to be with you? It doesn matter if you are Croatian, Albanian, Muslim. Explain how did we take advantage of everyone. Do you actualy know any part of the history. Thanks to Serbs, you Croatians, Muslim or Albanians did not have to price of being with Nazis in WW2. Thanks to Serbs that accepted Albanians and let them live in Kosovo, you changed demographic picture of Kosovo. In 1945, 50% of population of Kosovo was albanians. Now it is 90%. We did not get rich in Yugoslavia, but Slovenia. We just let all of you blood suckers to take even more teritories then you are supposed to have. Our only problem is that we are too proud to serve anyone. Our past and present show that.

Ashamed Frenchman 22 February, 2008, 07:05 I feel really ashamed of my country which has, once again, betrayed Serbia. I am not sure if peaceful means will achieve anything. I rather think that force will have to be used to liberate Kosovo from NATO occupation. Regarding the unrest against embassies, I believe that international law was broken by those countries, so they have absolutely no rights to complain!

John 22 February, 2008, 08:45 I hope not, but the injusticies which I understand have been metered out against the average Serb in Kosovo make it alarmingly likely.

Amazed 22 February, 2008, 08:54 It's really amazing to see the way rest of the world reacts to this potentially the 'most dangerous precedent' of a MELTDOWN of all International laws, treaties and obligations. Its worse than an invasion of a country, its much worse than a violation of human rights IN a country (such as Myanmar, Sudan,Zimbabwe etc) which the CNN/BBC types so gleefully portray, the self appointed Soros & Co. financed Western NGO's so vehementally denounce, even the 'false' Global warming scenarios that are so imaginatively displayed! What do these Colonists think they are? What gives them the right to invade, pillage, divide, crush, snuff out peoples' lives, entire nations, hopes, futures. Did the DEVIL HIMSELF send them to Earth to terrorise humankind? An appeal to all nations of the world, including those that so loudly tom tom their right to a place in UNSC, at least raise your squeaky voices for once, see the obvious.speak against the flouting of all laws of that institutions you are aspiring to lead. For gods sake, lead BY EXAMPLE, NOT MERE RHETORIC! After all, one cannot expect one or two nations to speak out for the entire 'FREE'? MANKIND. God save us all.

Sevodnya_Net 22 February, 2008, 09:30 Of course there won't be another war. Who exactly is going to invade Kosovo to "liberate" it? The only way to solve the "problem" by doing that would be to remove all the Albanians from Kosovo. Milosevic tried that in 1999 but was prevented. It is obvious from a lot of the comments here that many people wish he had succeeded, which I'm afraid only makes the NATO/EU action now all the more understandable. The big problem is the Serb populated border areas - there isn't yet a proper solution to that issue: erecting border fences isn't the way to handle this, unless violent incursions from the other side made it a necessity, but it should be resisted at all costs. I know it's difficult to make this point right now but Serbs need to stop p***ing in their own garden: if Kosovo is the cradle of Serbia, then for heavens sake don't rock it to pieces.

Zandor 22 February, 2008, 10:00 No, it won't be another war, but there also won't be no peace. Instead of peace and stability promised by US and EU, ethnic tensions and minor clashes are likely to occur for many decades to come. Bosnia, that was never a stable country, and it probably would never be, is simmering for many years already. How much more does it take to start to boil? Bosnian Serbs see Kosovo as a part of their heritage, and they are not very pleased with recent developments.
