Should Russia consider using pre-emptive strikes to protect itself and its allies?
Misha 1 February, 2008, 00:07 * In the secret agreement between Kennedy and Khrushchev, which ended the so-called "Cuban Missile Crisis," the US agreed to remove its Jupiter missiles from bases in Turkey, and the Soviet Union in turn agreed to then also remove its missiles from Cuba. In fact both the US missiles in Turkey and the Russian missiles in Cuba were based on 1950’s missile technology which in turn was based on the captured missile work that the Germans did during WWII. The short range of these missiles made it necessary to base the missiles relatively close to the intended target (in Cuba in the case of Russian missiles, and in Turkey in the case of US missiles). But by the early 1960’s both sides were working on a new generation of “inter-continental” missiles (ICBMs) which would allow both sides to strike each other with missiles launched from their own soil. This basically made the older generation of US and Russian missiles (in Turkey and in Cuba) obsolete. The Americans pointed their missiles at Moscow before Russia responded by pointing its own missiles at Washington DC, so the American side started the whole incident, as they have started every chapter in the escalation of the arms race since it began. After all, who developed the first A-bomb? The first H-Bomb? And on and on and on. The Americans have always believed -- and apparently still believe -- in the power of their money and technology to enable them to destroy Russia with impunity, without fear of massive retaliation. Russia's involvement in the arms race has mostly consisted in giving the Americans reasons to doubt that confident theory. I don't really find the advice helpful, that Russia should relive the Cuban Missile Crisis by deploying ABM interceptors in Cuba to counter the planned American ABMs in Poland and Czechoslovakia. But Russia certainly would have that right. After all a rogue nation such as North Korea or Iran certainly could try launching a missile at Venezuela.

MihalMihalich 1 February, 2008, 19:35 RE Misha I agree with many of points you just made, but definitely not with your view of inevitable collision of US and Russia. And Russian Warheads are made of super hard depleted uranium that Direct hit by antimissile cannot destroy. Simple as that… only thing they can do is chasers like THAAD. Dear Ladies & Gentlemen Let me say to you all out there that it is very disappointing for me to see people pay more interest to yellow press scandalous topics in RT forum and don’t seem to care that much for real end of the world topic. ========================================= You watch news are watching news and they show Russian 4star general saying “launch of one antimissile missile from Warsaw+U.S. base in any direction will result in AUTOMATIC launch of NUCLEAR MISSILES to Washington and New York” … even if that antimissile is launched to intercept North Korea or Iran missiles. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ========================================= Why would you want one antimissile that destroys EARTH? Really… why? So if say North Koreans launch their pointless missile that by long run most likely will not even reach US because it barely fly and they don’t even have nuclear warheads for it and U.S. launch their antimissile to intercept and 20-60 seconds after 400+ nuclear missiles with 2000+ warheads launched to U.S. and of cause U.S. does the same. And whoever survives would witness nuclear winter… Do you still want the antimissile shield in Warsaw? Best Regards

Regular_John 3 February, 2008, 17:02 Poland agreeing to host the US missile shield on its territory is in my view a grave and dangerous mistake. The defence of continental Europe from outside aggression is a matter for us Europeans with Russia at the heart of that decision making process. We should not allow the US to play political games with our lives. Russia has an installation already in place that they have offered to share with NATO instead of thanking them the US snubs Russia and insist on building their own system in the heart of Europe. Bribing the poles by offering to modernise their air force. Russia is now on edge and views this as a fret to her own security these fears are serious history has shown us that we can not just ignore Russia on these most serious of issues. As the EU is now the worlds leading economy maybe it is time for us to develop our own defence strategy I think this would lead to a much safer Europe I don’t think we should place our safety (including Russia) in the hands of a country 5000 kilometres away.

Paul 8 February, 2008, 01:31 The Cold War was won by no particular country but by a nuclear bomb. The nuclear bomb was at the foundation of the conception of Mutually Assured Destruction – MAD. The two major nuclear powers had one thing in common: both thought rationally. MAD lead to stability: neither “The Evil Empire” nor “The Shining Palace On The Hill” were willing to sacrifice its peoples in self-destructive war that was impossible to win. Thinking along the same lines I welcome departure of Russia from the pledge of the Soviet Union - not to use its nuclear weapons first. By declaring readiness to use nuclear weapons first (implies against conventional attack too) Russia eliminates ambiguity, tames temptations of some to use force against Russia and thus Russian new military doctrine enhances world stability. We, Americans, are rational and reasonable people – knowing that now Russia could respond to any attack with nuclear weapons, we will be especially mindful not to allow our leaders to ignore MAD and to provoke Russia. If total nuclear disarmament is not possible, if instead the USA is using NATO to expand its National Missile Defense (NMD) system in Central and Eastern Europe, then Russia new military doctrine is good for all peoples and especially for Europeans. Peace not wars Paul

sam 8 February, 2008, 19:01 Nice to see that governments cannt pull the wool over educated peoples eyes. The USA pulled out of Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and talking of protecting Europe with ABM from imaginary foe is really not fooling many. This is simple to get an nuclear upper hand with Russia for its own protection and noones else. MAD made the world safe. You do away with all nuclear weapons or stay with MAD, there is nothing in between them. Slowly surrounding surrounding Russia with NATO is not protecting europe in any way at all but endangers it more.Everyone knows how dangerous a cornered bear can get. Being an NATO eastern europern state does not really offer much protection in a coflict with Russia.Things have not changed to the very least.First they had american ICBMs targeting them, now they will have cheaper and shorter ranged ones pointing at them. If Russia wakes tomorrow and nukes one of these states.Do you honestly believe the USA or NATO would fire back and end humanity? Dont think so,as long as the only missiles flying are heading to that country and no other,a peace agreement will quickly be reached. MAD as Paul pointed out is the only true protection for humanity from nuclear weapons. As for ABMs,as they get better so would the ICBMs as Russia has shown with the Topol M and the new one they recently tested. So all ABMs do is promote better ways for us to fry the human race.

MihalMihalich 9 February, 2008, 02:37 Dear Ladies & Gentlemen RE: Paul Americans are indeed good and reasonable people I know they are. Maybe it’s the media… As I have mentioned before that the smoke about the change of preemptive strike policy is only response to ABM and in fact is not a threat to anyone because Russia has no enemies. That same 4star general made another much more important statement just before this one. He said that if an ABM is launched from Warsaw in any direction it WILL RESULT IN NUCLEAR STRIKE ON Washington and New York. For those of you who don’t get it I say it again… If Americans will decide to intercept none existing ballistic missiles of whoever … a launch of single ABM will be signal to launch actual Russian nukes. In United States they choose to ignore such statements. Again, unscheduled ABM launch will result to the end of world. I didn’t say it a Russian 4start general in charge said it. And those of you who believe that ABMs are not meant AGAINST Russia should know that there are 12 countries that have nuclear weapons and only Russia has missiles capable of delivering warheads to United States. American ABMs against only Russian missiles there is no one else. Best Regards

sam 9 February, 2008, 22:34 What really worries me about extra missiles near a nuclear superpower be it Russia or the USA are the little mistakes that can happen. Everyone most know of the Norwegian rocket incident on Jan 25th 1995.That was when humanity was within 10mins of extiction. For those that cannt recall, there was an scheduled test firing by Norwegian and American scientists from Norway of a missile. This was picked up by the Russian early warning system.Yelsin activated his nuclear football and had only 10 mins to decide to fire back or not. Before 10mins was up it was noticed that the missile was heading away from Russia and the briefcase was closed. It appears that the notification given by Norway never got to the right people in Russia. Think how near we were to the end of the world in 1995 just because of some little piece of paper did not get to where it was to go. But what really scared me when the details were given a week later was that a drunk had his fingers on the launch codes deciding on the mass extinction of the human race.

Rachel 11 February, 2008, 18:23 War is a terrible thing to anticipate; Iraq anticipates every day such strikes. I think, Russia, that if you stay on the track of such gestures as the good news the whole world hears today that you are writing off Iraq's debt to Russia - this is the way to go; the way of blessings - charity from a clean heart is the best way. Plus, if you do the same to your enemies - as Venezuela did by sharing free heating oil with poor, helpless 6th world nations like amerika when winter weather strikes with cold and freezing temperatures - like Russia is well aware is no light matter to a family left in the cold by ruthless dictators with a mind of Nero - laughing while the whole world screams in terror - it will be as coals upon Nero's head and upon the heads of those who serve Nero-types. Christ Yahshuah works miracles and we need miracles. Thank you, Russia, for your goodwill gesture to Iraq. Please set up hospitals in Iraq and rally the nations to join you and to quit this horror upon Iraq; not one more day should you hesitate. Pray for help for Iraq and for Russia and for every nation - no nation is exempt from the terror that the evil emperor has set his wicked hand against the innocent and oppressed. as I say, I think Russia would do well to do good to their enemies first, and then, you will know what to do and how to counter-strike any missile - whether by prayer or by man's technology....and you will have peace of mind as well, at least, in the end (when all dictators are soon wiped off the map one way or another) - sooner than later, and then there will be no more threat of war - ever again, as Yahowah our Creator promises in these days. I am sorry that any nation should have to consider "pre-emptive" strikes; but our Creator knows how to instruct and protect in every occasion. Just do what he (Yahshuah) says to do - and don't trust in lying shepherds (who claim to be Yahshuah's spiritual leaders; but are ministers of satan - there are many blind leading the blind into the ditch). One more thing...Yahshuah shed his precious blood for mankind; even on the day of Passover (Pesach, Hebrew). He is he passover lamb. About two days before Yahshuah rose from the dead, (almost about 2000 years ago, exactly), a young woman named MariYah anointed Yahshuah with precious oil even the apostles argued it was a waste and not necessary; but it most certainly was; according to Matthew 26:13. This story (Matt. 26:1-13) must be mentioned where ever the true gospel is spoken of, to his glory; and Yahshuah's glory is very great. (the story in Matt. 26 is very beautiful and very important; there is a great secret in it; will you know it?). Keep giving to the poor and needy (out of a clean heart) and you will certainly know. Yahshuah bless you, Russia.
