What are your hopes and fears for Russia in 2008?
Norman 31 December, 2007, 16:25 I belive that the 2007 DUMA elections were an indicator of Russia's future, with or without irregularities. I believe that most Russians want some form of democracy and economic freedom, with security and social programmes. Wishing Russians all the very best in life in 2008 ( such as political, economic and social progress). HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Sevodnya_Net 31 December, 2007, 19:25 I hope Russia elects a very different type of President in March. Above all I hope Russia can end 2008 with a less paranoid view of the west, which by and large wishes it well and wants to see it prosper. I wish all fellow contributors to this forum a very happy and peaceful 2008.

John 1 January, 2008, 06:08 Russia is a wonderful country, I have been working here for about a year, I believe all people around the world all want the same thing, to be happy, prosperous, live a good life. We Americans working here in Russia only want to help and be apart of this country. We are not here to take over or judge anything or anyone. I hope this new year will bring more understanding and cooperation between all of our peoples. We all live on just one earth. We all just want to live in peace.

Marzipan6 1 January, 2008, 07:40 I hope that Russia will be able to grow out of its fantasies about its Soviet history which are so damaging to both its internal development, and to its relations with its neighbours. I fear that it won't.

NYCinMoscow 1 January, 2008, 22:51 I hope Russia will develop more in it's own unique way and not take Western pressure to become more like them. Russia is in the unique position not only to see it's own errors of it's past, but also the errors of the West and it's ways. It's not black and white. It's all grey. Best to Russia and it's people.

Michael (UK) 2 January, 2008, 08:41 It's important that Russia grows stronger in order to combat aggressive American policies. This can best be done by reducing the use of the US$. Please continue to support Iran in every way possible otherwise they will go the way of Iraq.

Igor 3 January, 2008, 15:02 As a Brazilian of a Russian granfather. I wish Russia keep its wonderful ability of making all religions and ethnicities live together glued by the Russian tongue. This magnificent feature of Russian society is poorly known in the West and should be better explored by Russia. I fear that Russia is not doing enough for generating alternatives and coping with a future world less oil hungry.

Sakia 4 January, 2008, 01:05 Russia - this had been a strict warning by my parents to shut up about it in public when I was a child after World War II; this was a bunch of flowers given to me when I was a teenager by a member of the long gone Ossipov (sorry for the spelling) orchestra after a concert in Vienna; this was and is music, be it folk songs or classical; this was a visit to sites of space activities in and near Moscow with - tragically - a lot of poverty around in the early 1990ies; this still is a dream of travelling freely to Wladiwostok by (the Trans-Siberian) train without crossing borders in a sort of a Union with Europe, built on a reasonable common basis of social welfare, respect for human rights and democratic structures, although I will not live long enough to see it. With my best wishes for Russia in 2008 and onwards .

Sanjay 8 January, 2008, 06:58 Russia's only hope is its brilliant and talented people who have shown infinite patience and courage against most every barbaric act inflicted upon them. Russia has always been caught unprepared or illprepared and at its weakest for the last 8 centuries and this repeat of history must end. Russia's greatest fears are: 1. Appalling death rate, trajic birth rate, unhealthy family and social environment, exploitation of women and children. 2. Neoliberal Economics headed by Kudrin ruining long term growth for Russia. 3. Persistent (and not to end anytime soon) encroachment by Anglo-americans from the west, radical terrorism from the south and a rising and immensly powerful china in the south-east. 4. Russia is not a world-power anymore. It is a eurasian power. And on eurasia it must focus. Russia must hedge against these encraochments and fears by forming strong partnerships with like minded european countries and India. May be Japan too although the Japanese are pretty much an american colony. Anglo-americans will make every attempt to isolate europe, Russia and India from each other. EU-Russia-India need to form a strong partnership.

Robert 8 January, 2008, 17:50 I hear that President Putin is Americas allie or friend Yet he supplies Iranians with neuclear capabilities. Yet Putin know that the Iranians play the Russian and the U.S. If they don't get what they want from Russia then the like the U.S. and If they don"t get what they want fron U.S. they like Russia. However Russia is closer to iran and easer to deliver the pay load. It would seem that Russia would be more concerned to disarm the Iranians.

Tom 9 January, 2008, 20:12 If a president resigns or the position becomes vacant does Russia hold fresh elections or parliament make an appointment? is there a set order of succession? Could Russia become a parliamentary democracy?

RachEl 12 January, 2008, 04:44 I am filled with hope for Russia because (although I have never been to Russia in person) my soul feels as though I am part of Russia (I think this is true for many people worldwide)maybe because I am a believer in Yahshuah (Christ)? I read the article about Russians adopting the destitute elderly and Russia's tradition of caring for the elderly. The elderly are the foundation of society. As the family who took in the old woman said; the elderly are wise and have acquired precious knowledge and experience; especially of a world gone by (pre-space age) when people cared for life more than for material wealth; and worked very hard for things that money cannot buy: love and family. The elderly have a great wealth of information and years of experience that is priceless and have faithful, genuine love for family and recognize the great need to nurture and preserve a family. The way the elderly are treated says a lot about a nation. Thank you, Russia. My fears for Russia in 2008 is that the world is on a fast track with faulty train tracks that cannot support the burden of so many souls blindly racing to a destination that appears to be safe, yet ends is a terrible place; they cannot see ahead - if they could see ahead - they would get off the runaway train. Care for the poor, Russia. Listen to the elderly. Don't forsake the old way. Return to it and wait for Yahshuah to restore the nations. Don't give up Russia to the dogs of corrupt western ideals. Be an example to the world and be blessed. Russia is as strong as its faith in Yahshuah's (who is Christ)Word of hope and light and promise. Joy comes from the struggle for the ability to remain on the narrow way that eventually leads to where you really want to go - the place to safety and prosperity. Love will never fail you when you make up your mind to suffer for it and never ever give up the long uphill journey to the sure place. Yahshuah will heal the nations. He can surely heal your soul, Russia, and bring you back to him; one soul at a time. He suffers with you and for you; although he seems far away; it is a firey trial for you.
