What can be done to end the violence in Georgia’s breakaway republics?
ROBERT (U.S.) 11 August, 2008, 15:01 Russia tends to think that the U.S. is taking side. The U.S. and the rest of the world are not taking side with either Russia or Georgia There trying to help both resolve this problem peacefull. The problem here is that the peace keeper didn't keep the peace very well. They encouraged Ossitian terroist to intimidate the Georgians (war experianced Georgian troops). On the other hand crossing someone elses borders and attacking them doesn't constitute a self defence move either.Every one needs to to go back to there respective borders. The world needs to tell Saakashvillie that South Ossitia is not Georgias borders. Then open dilouge and see what its going to take to keep the peace maybe some new peace keepers.Like my dad use to allways say if people get to much time to think about getting into a fight normally they wont get into a fight. However Russian need to control its ego most people in that region haven't forgotton years of soviet oppression and it could destablize the region. That looks like good jungle warfare country. which is not suitable for modern armies. (esspecially if they are coached by doctors on how to fight jungle warfare.)

Vijay 11 August, 2008, 15:37 The oil price rise has shifted the table over United States. Bush-Clinton mismanagement of fiscal and energy policies has made it possible that US will no longer be a superpower after 2012. Every superpower’s down fall is marked by a sense less leadership and a devastating war. This one is no different. The Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) are new set countries that will take over the leadership in UN. The Europeans and the Americans will be seated behind these new superpowers in the next decade. Read more at - http://www.defence.pk/forums/economy-development/13377-not-china-india-but-brazil-leads-bric-into-superpower-status-oil.html The Question is simple, the answer simpler - M.Sakhasvilli(an)is an American puppet, determined to take his innocent and ignorant countrymen into the embrace of those, whose main aim is to prevent the emergence of the above-mentioned scenario. If people like him do not come to their senses, things will only get worse. After all what can Georgia offer to these republics, if Sakhasviilian himself begs every other day in Washington. These are not Georgia's breakaway republics, these are republics trying to break away from the evil regime of the present Georgian.whatever.?

MihalMihalich 11 August, 2008, 16:04 Dear Ladies & Gentlemen Russia will withdraw after 1. Georgian army actually signs Act of none use of force or even recognize S. Osetian right for independence. 2. Sakashvili resigns and goes to court for War Crimes and Genocide. 3. Georgain army must be disband and disarmed of all offensive weapons. Why? Because Georgian army launched a massive attack and invasion on peaceful cities and villages destroying everything and everyone on sight in South Ossetia, ethnic cleansing the areas they occupied shooting and killing Russian peacekeepers, Saakashvili committed act of GENOCIDE against the ethnic minority, many them are Russian citizens. This is second Genocide to Ossetian people during past 15 years when Georgian army killed over 3000 civilians and razed 100 villages causing tens of thousands refugees. Only this time NATO countries and the United States and US clients sold them hundreds of tanks and armored units, hundreds tons of ammunition, trained over 8000 of their soldiers, equipped them to NATO standards and politically supported their act of Genocide of Ossetians. And now United States and Western countries provides them mass media support, COVERING UP Osetian Genocide! !!!The United States is doing that in preparation of NATO attack on Russian Federation.!!! They did exactly the same thing before they attacked Serbia. Monsters do not need to justify their actions, they have media machine that takes pictures of Osetian killed and wounded and states that it is Georgian killed and wounded, they show Georgian MLRS shooting at night and leveling the city and say it is Russia attacking Georgia. They can only do it for 1 reason ONLY, they are preparing for war. If you would talk to me in 2007 I would have told you my forecast of coming events, about collapsing United States economy and tell you that their virtual bubble of financial prosperity is nothing but printed money and over-limit credit lines, and that time has came to pay the price and that Republicans will start many regional wars in many countries because they control their governments, and they are going to start those wars to cover up US bankruptcy, and if NATO has their attention on something else they won’t notice how U.S.A. collapsed European Federal Reserves, because $USD “note” is going worthless to shrink the 55trillion debt. And that $USD will never be exchangeable currency again, that NATO countries after being robed by Unites States may unite against America. But all this isn’t important. Russian diplomats have permanent position in UN, it is time to freaking use it and DAMAND Justice for Osetians and force United States to STOP SUPPORTING F@#$ING FASCISTS!!! It is time for Russian President to go to Washington and Expose this Informational WAR before its too late! Best regards

Vijay Singh 11 August, 2008, 16:36 Some ways - Declare this a no-conflict zone, just like a non-nuclear zone, guaranteed by UN and RF. Declare that monster, M.Sakhasvilli a monster and try him at the Hague, just as poor ol' Slovodan is being tried today. South Ossetia is declared a protectorate of the RF. US is exposed and all its machinations too. Above all, this war be declared a genocide.

SrpskiCrnogorac 11 August, 2008, 17:37 First let me express my condolence to all victims of this criminal aggression. At the time I want Russia to know that, the free world is with you and your heroic soldiers. "The U.S. and the rest of the world are not taking side with either Russia or Georgia There trying to help both resolve this problem peacefull." By sending more weapons to Georgia from Jordan? The USA is now participating in genocide and actively fighting against Russia. We all know which price the USA will have to pay for this.

Russia Rules 11 August, 2008, 17:42 THE USA must put pressure on GEORGIA to comply with Russian demands. The USA must help Russia end this rapidly. If both USA AND Russia puts pressure on Georgia, then the conflict will stop. Russia has terrorist problems too, even worse than USA. Russia is under constant terrorist threat, so USA should help fellow victims of terrorism.

peacelover 11 August, 2008, 17:57 Good question! The only way this conflict can be resolved permanently, is to remove ASAP the American stooge, alias Georgian President. Otherwise Russian forces may have to return once more in the future to deal with this liar, hellbent on plunging the world in a mess.

John 11 August, 2008, 18:04 The 'madman' Saakhshvilli should be brought before the Hague Court if this 'machine' has any credability or justice attached to it. We all know who supports him but this 'big boss' will never have to answer his crimes! If the EU/UN has any integrity it should force the Georgian Govt. to sign up to the non use of force in the two territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia immediatly and then some dialogue can begin. RF troops should remain as the sole peacekeepers in the area until talks are underway!

Frank M. 11 August, 2008, 18:39 My opinion is United States not get involved in a conflict the Russian Federation can handle on their own in their "region" and back yard. It's obvious Georgia violated its treaty and their timing of attacking South Ossetia during the Olympics was planned. Many Americans do not know the history of conflict between Ossetians and Georgians. This ignorance leads to a one sided view that can cause more problems. United States need not get involved-they want to because Georgia is a strategic area in the region and has invested millions of dollers-[most in military aid].Do we see Russia getting involved in U.S.-Mexico problems?

MCC 11 August, 2008, 18:43 This attack on Georgia is, in reality, the beginning of the end of 'Russian empire', little by little it will disintegrate - there will be more peripherial conflicts [Russians eyeing Ukraine as a next victim]on the way but the end game is obvious. Their population is dying out, chinese crossing the border and taking over Siberia, no roads, no infrastructure, look at their geriatric army, look at their new generation - hordes of Russian orphants abandoned by their government and, most importantly, by the Russian ortodox church [by the way, the Russian church doesn't control Ukrainian Church any more, in case you don't remember - isn't it time to UNDECLARE YOURSELF AS A THIRD ROME????]. As any other empire in the history it is going to cease to exist. Let's see now; if Russia is going to declare the independence of Ossetia and Abkhazia; so logically speaking they should give independence to ALL so called autonomous republics, starting with Tatarstan, then Karelia which is integral part of Finland, Kaliningrad will become Koenigsberg again, this pearl of the Baltic, the home of Emmanuel Kant which you stole after 1945, named after one of this criminal bolsheviks and turned it into the public toilet - we can help Russian to start this process. We have to start talking already about post imperial Russia and ask ourselves what is the legacy of this monster - goulags, Chernobyl and the latest Russian culinary sensation tea with pollonium. In case your Russians didn't notice there was a catastrophic fall of your market which is beyond repair. Investment money are leaving Russia in total panick and a lot of them will end up in China. You can thank little [5.2"]volodia putin for this. MCC

Mikk 11 August, 2008, 18:47 Russian forces has gone to far now, i thought it was a fair reaction after the Georgian attack i Southossetia. But they should have stayed inside the area of conflict. Now i think that NATO soon will react and should do it, deployment of naval forces to the Black sea, air forces to Turkey and higher state of readiness of landforces. When i see how much damage Georgian forces have made to Russian troops, then wait and see what skilled NATO soldiers kan do. I am sorry, but if the russians continue you will loose your 76th division. Russia had some understandig in the west (Europe) but by continueing the assault you are loosing that

aleksander 11 August, 2008, 18:54 Georgia may have suffered from Soviet rule (it is not sure), but If I am not mistaken, Stalin was of Georgian origin. I have a question: is Georgia able to give Ossetia the same amount of freedom as it obtained itself at the dissolution of the Soviet Union? (independency, or at least an autonomy?). I have the impression that the present war may end if the two amounts of freedom mentioned come to be equal.

Tamara 11 August, 2008, 18:54 Dear people of Russia and South Ossetia, My heart is bleeding watching what is going on in your country! It reminds me of what was going on in our former YU since the 1990-s. The most dreadful thing is the propaganda in the western media. I know what I am talking about. One side being constantly satanised, and the other one justified, no matter what. No, "no matter what" is the wrong expression. Of course something matters. Interests! The interests of the mighty, of the police of the world, the democratic forces, "those who are not with us are against us". Cowboys, fire weapons, force - this is what is being used in order to pursue one's interests. Who cares for the people? Who cares for the blood, wounded, hungry? Who cares for the children's tears? So - this is what the Serbian government warned of: don't recognise Kosovo, it will bring disaster and war to the whole world. Noone wants to listen. Who cares what the bloodthirsty Serbs are saying. Please, dear people, don't think I am biassed or have prejudices. I am half Serbian, half Slovenian. I don't care about nationalities or religion. The only thing I care about is justice, which does not seem to exist for years, or decades. The powerful are drawing the borders of the world. With the blood of our people. I am with you, dear people, I know what you are going through. I cannot concentrate on my work, you are always on my mind. Your journalists are wonderful, by the way, so young, intelligent and brave, you can be proud! You will make the right decisions, I know that, and I just want to let you know that even though I am not a functionary, decision-maker, politician or anything the like, but nothing more than an ordinary citizen of this world, I am with you: with my heart, my mind, my soul! I wish you a soon end to all this suffering. I just feel sick of all the lies in the media! Like I said, the same happened to Serbia. The most recent thing was when more than 200.000 people demonstrated peacefully against the independance of Kosovo, and all Euronews, CNN, n-tv etc were showing, were the few idiots attacking foreign embassies. I could not trust neither ears nor eyes. The well-known "propaganda machinery" in Serbia? This was and is nothing in comparison with the democratic West! Disgusting! That's the least I can say. And people are suffering and dying. And dying and suffering. You know what's worst? People in these countries trust their media blindly. No chance they are telling lies. Yes - how naive one can be - they truly trust each and every word they hear. Please find a solution. A good one for all. Someone has to stop this american imperialism. They should leave their noses in their own country and solve their own problems. They have gone too far. Much too far. Hang in there and don't give up. The truth is on your side and your conscience is clear. Something that cannot be bought with all the money and power in this world. A big hug from me to all your children! The cute, laughing, innocent little big-eyed faces! Shame on the idiots causing them to suffer that much!!

Ali 11 August, 2008, 19:49 Today’s politics is all but a great game for those sitting at the top. And the recent South-Ossetian War is just a pawn move used by certain actors in this world against its opponent/s. Sometimes in order to comprehend what’s really going on it is necessary to look at the bigger picture. Let us now go back to 2001. 1. On September 11th, 2001 the United States is attacked by the so-called terrorists and non-state actors, led by a certain individual Osama Bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, whom we still don’t know the whereabouts of (or if he even still exists). I don’t want to undermine the atrocious destruction the attacks had on the United States, not to mention the 2000 lives of innocent people, but even though it was a loss it was also an opportunity for the United States, and especially those sitting in the White House. It gave the United States justification to mess in the affairs of other states that it could potentially use when needed. 2. So the United States invades Afghanistan almost a month later after the attacks, gets rid of the Taliban regime, which supposedly harbored terrorist, and installs a friendly US government led by Hamid Karzai. Thus we have the beginning of The War on Terror, in which of course, the United States is the leader, fighting for democracy and all that’s good in the world. And everyone else is evil. Did I forget to mention opium and narcotics that are ever so present in Afghanistan? Now who’s better to take care of that other than the United States? After all I am sure that the US will MAKE SURE that it will get into the right hands. 3. So it’s 2003 now, and the United States invades Iraq. I have nothing to say about this war other than oil, oil and oil. Drugs in Afghanistan and oil in Iraq, it’s as simple as 123. Did I mention that the production of drugs in Afghanistan increased after 2001 and there are more innocent Iraqis dead now than ever before, even under the cruel regime of Saddam Hussein? 4. You don’t hear about the War on Terror and the Iraq War now on the news. Why? Because things have subsided, no one is dying and etc. The United States has established a strong hold in the region. So now, it’s time for the US to move on to stage 2 of the game. Let’s stir the pot in the former Soviet Republics, time to move closer to the target. Mini-mani-mo, let’s start with pathetic little Georgia. So the Rose Revolution displaced Shevardnadze with a pro-United States president, no one other than Saakashvili. That Saakashvili, I don’t even know where to start with this clown. Is this guy even Georgian? He is married to some Dutch hooker, went to Columbia and George Washington Law Schools, worked for a law firm and Deloitte Consulting in New York, went to a bunch of conferences on human rights where he ate himself fat and the list goes on. So the only question I have is why is this guy the president of Georgia? Oh wait, is it because he was democratically elected? OMG NO WAY! Democratic elections in Georgia and Saakashvili is elected by the people?! Well now I want to move to Georgia! Because the president is democratically elected. Obviously that’s the most important thing in the whole wide world. Those hundreds of thousands of Georgians running from Georgia are just sooooooo retarded; they just don’t appreciate the importance of a democratically elected president. 5. Georgia was a piece of cake; let’s move to an even more pathetic Ukraine! Victor Yuschenko, through the Orange Revolution becomes president of poor little Ukraine in 2005. And the time has ended when poor little Ukraine is being bullied by mean old Russia. And Yushchenko is the one to do it! He will stand up to mean old Russia, and align Ukraine with the West. And then Ukraine will become democratic and have all the riches that come with democracy. Especially Yushchenko, some bling bling in offshore Cayman Islands accounts. And he is the ONLY one who can do it! NO ONE ELSE CAN! But why not you ask? Because Yushchenko is married to that American Ukrainian chick that works at the White House, or used to work, doesn’t matter. 6. This is easier than I thought! Thinks Uncle Sam. Where should I stir the pot now? Oh yes, Kyrgyzstan. Thought it could get away easily. No! Those mountain people need a revolution, and the we are going to call it the Tulip Revolution, because this country has a lot of Tulips (I bet George Bush came up with that one). I don’t know what else to say about this, even though I am originally from Kyrgyzstan, but this country is POOR AS HELL. And POOR AS HELL countries dance to the flute of RICH AS HELL countries. That’s just a fact, like 2+2=4. 7. Time to move on to a more interesting subject: Kosovo. For some time I will admit that I was disengaged from the world news. I had finals and an internship and etc. So I am watching the Miss Universe 2008 pageant, enjoying the beautiness of it all, and all of a sudden, I almost chock on my pretzel. I see Miss Kosovo on the screen. At first I think maybe this is a joke. Maybe The Miss Universe pageant decided to bring its humor up a notch. Like HAHA Just Kidding! We just played a joke on our audience! You can now get off the stage Miss Kosovo is NOT A REAL COUNTRY. But no, she makes the top ten! So Kosovo which has not been a country for even ONE YEAR, and whose independence is still NOT RECOGNIZED by some members of the international community, and it makes it into the top ten?! While Kyrgyzstan which has been A STATE since 1991, is NOT EVEN in the pageant. You can imagine, my feelings were hurt, A LOT. Aside from the pageant, other things bother me as well. So let’s get this straight. Kosovo territory, which is mostly occupied by Muslim Albanians, is part of Serbia, which is occupied by Serbians, a SLOVAK people. So one day the Kosovars decided to become independent because they are not Serbian and therefore should not be part of Serbia. Well how about this, how about moving to Albania! Did you think of that one!? The reason why I have a BIG issue with this is because Kosovo holds a lot of Serbian sentimental valuables which makes Serbia. A lot of Serbian history is embedded in the territory, therefore there are a lot locations that have a sentimental value, a lot of ancient churches, and etc. But this is not even the major issue. The major issue here is the double standard practiced by the US and Western Europe. And here is what I mean. 8. South Ossetia has been trying to gain independence from Georgia since the break up of the Soviet Union. It is important to understand that South Ossetians are ethnically different from Georgians. They are two ETHNICALLY DIFFERENT groups, just like Albanians and Serbians. So South Ossetians want to be independent from Georgia, probably because Georgians who sit in the parliament and do whatever it is they do there, don’t give a crap about south Ossetians and don’t take their needs into considerations when making laws and etc. Perhaps the same as with Albanians in Kosovo that felt neglected by the Serbian lawmakers. So it’s only natural that they want to be independent and on their own, in other words call their own shots. So will someone please explain to me why, the United States and most of Western Europe chose to recognize Kosovo’s independence and not South Ossetia’s. I mean the two cases are JUST SO IDENTICAL! Oh wait I know why, because in the Kosovo case, Serbia is an ally of Russia, since they are Slovak people so that means that they are evil and if they want to keep Kosovo and Serbia together and that is an evil plan and the US COULD NOT BE A PART OF IT under any circumstances. And in the South Ossetia’s case, since Saakashvili hates Russia with all his GEORGIAN guts because Russia is evil and wants to take over Georgia, and South Ossetians called Russia for help, when their hospitals and schools were being bombed starting August 8th (the beginning of Beijing Olympics), then of course the US has to ally itself with Georgia. No Ifs and buts about it! It only makes sense duh! South Ossetia doesn’t even have an army! So when Saakashvili decided (or maybe he didn’t decided a little birdie told him in the ear what to do) to wipe South Ossetians off the face of the earth and therefore committing genocide, what other choice did South Ossetians have other than go under the wing of mean old Russia? Ask NATO and the UN for help? And wait for 6 freaking years for a so-called resolution?! 9. I don’t even want to call this a war, because it is not. Saakashvili is not attacking South Ossestia’s highly-trained military and navy, that has been connivingly plotting to attack Georgia since god knows when! THEY DON’T EVEN HAVE ANY. Saakashvili sent tanks into South Ossetia on August 8th, and they have been obliterating schools, churches, and hospitals. They are attacking civilians and innocent people whose only worry is to feed their families. And the war would be the last of their worries. CNN and Fox News don’t show you the atrocities that Saakashvili’s troops are committing against South Ossetia. They only show the Russians, on TANKS, with GUNS. OH NO, they have tanks and guns and are in South Ossetia and so they must be at war with Georgia! Did Fox News, CNN and Wall Street Journal tell you that they are in South Ossetia, because South Ossetians have asked for their help? Did they tell you that 90% of South Ossetians have Russian citizenship? Did they tell you that Russian peacekeepers were shot at by the Georgian troops? Did they tell you that 4000 South Ossetians are already dead? Of course they didn’t tell you that. Why? Because it’s all part of propaganda, and we all need to know who the enemy is. And it is not GEORGIA, NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Is not obvious what’s going on? Saakashvili wants to wipe off the population, so that no South Ossetians are there so that he can all the more justify it as Georgian territory. He doesn’t even care if it’s Georgian territory. He is only carrying out the orders. You don’t have to agree with me on anything. I just want people to know that things are more complicated than they seem. Everyone is in this is for his own benefit. Saakashvili is doing this to fatten his checkbook, the US is doing this to balance against a potential enemy before it’s too late. And the truth is who is to blame them? Why is it wrong to be greedy and selfish and be number 1? Anyway, it is important to realize that in order for some to keep the attention off themselves, it needs to create problems elsewhere that will be the focus of conversation. And did anybody notice that once things have subsided in Afghanistan and Iraq did these waves of revolutions start to happen? And just when the US elections are on the horizon. Now the presidential candidates can talk about the enemy! Perfect timing Georgia! As I have mentioned at the beginning of this post this is all just a game for those at the top, and perhaps for you and me where we can sit in the safety of our homes and in a perverted manner enjoying discussing them and arguing and trying to prove our point. But for some it is not a game. It is life and death. Life is not fair and that is my ultimate point. And there’s nothing you can do about it, but relish it and do what you think is best for you in the end. Oh the hypocrisy of our life.

David 11 August, 2008, 20:38 Georgia declared UDI, an illegal form of independence, mastered by usa and the uk, thus preventing a true and legal gvt. from forming, a gvt. supportive of the Russian gvt. This act of Genocide was orchestrated from Washington at a time when it was thought all eyes and ears would be on the Olympics. This time Bush, you have been caught with your pants down. Bush has been wanting a punch-up with Russia for a long time now and instead of going through the front he decided a 'tactical' move by going through the back door, get someone else to start and what better way than Georgia. Bush wants Georgia to plant his missiles against Russia and to control the oil/gas pipeline. His military machine cannot run without it and he knows it. Echoing much of what has been said, especially about the economy of the states, one has to look at the theory as to how the Vietnam war started and now how the invasion of Iraq and hanging of Saddam Hussain had been mapped out. Now Russia. The american's luck has run out and now they have been exposed regarding their greed and pyschopathic tendancies. The Butcher of Georgia and Bush both need to be brought to trial and the evidence gathered be presented. RT ran a good insight into the current conflict and outlined that Russia had been to the UN shortly before this massacre and they were scoffed at. Bush has not condemned Georgia at all - why not?? Bush, you lost in Korea, you lost in Vietnam, you have lost in Iraq and you will lose against Russia. Give up before things get out of hand. You are not the grand dictator of the world and I, for one, will not bow down to you. My bags are packed and ready should Russia need an extra pair of hands, and I am sure there are more like me. Bush, let's party.it's going to wonderful watching you dance to the tune of another!!!

james 11 August, 2008, 22:16 America would not be taking any interest in georgia if there was not an oil pipe running through it. The American government lied when it told us that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, with these lies good american people and other good people from different countries sent their sons to die. While millions of poor people are starving in parts of Africa due to war and dictators, America does nothing to help them because these african have no oil to take. They would lie, cheat, steal and go to war to obtain oil. The only reason America is taking any interest in Georgia and risk starting world war 3 is all down to the greed for oil. Russia is correct in its stance and i hope the whole of europe does not fall for more disgusting lies which will lead us into another war like Iraq, which cant be won.
