Norman 11 August, 2008, 23:05 An excellent question, in light of the current crisis! Good wording. 1. The ethnic republics need their culture respected. 2. See if these areas can be self-sufficient and self-governing ( as South Ossetia and Abkhazia are). 3. Hold people like the Georgian president criminally responsible for this massacre. ( He bullied So. Ossetia and Abkhazia, and now Russia is going after him.) 4. Develope a special diplomatic status for these small areas, so they can get the international respect they are due. 5. If all else fails, Russia should reclaim South Ossetia and Abkhazia!!!

aria 11 August, 2008, 23:11 The matter is a bit delicate, if it is true that Georgia take the fist move that start the aggression then simply withdraw the army . S.Osetian clearly want to be an independent state from Georgia, they must call for referendum and involved the UN instead of using military action.

Neil 12 August, 2008, 00:31 The reports from the media in the UK are getting more and more anti-Russian. When the night time attack by Georgia was first reported in the early hours of friday morning all three of the major UK news stations (BBC, ITN, Sky) all reported that Georgia started this conflict, the first experts on tv all spoke of Georgian aggression, and how Russia had called an emergency meeting of the UN to end the violence. As the day wore on though they all managed to get there hands on the anti-Russian experts who all blame Russia and paint Georgia as a poor victim of Russian aggression. They soon forgot that it was US and UK that vetoed the Russian UN proposal, If they had not then maybe Russia wouldn't have been forced to send in more troops to protect the people of Ossetia. As for speaking about how Sovereign borders being respected. The US and UK governments should remember that they subjected Belgrade to an illegal bombing campaign for over two months, targeting civilian buildings, so that they could annex the Serbian region of Kosovo for there own gains.

Stevo 12 August, 2008, 00:39 Russia should destroy Georgian fascist army and force its unconditional surrender and capitulation. After that, they should help people of George to get back on their feet. oh yeah, and that little tyrant Saacasvili should be sent to a mental asylum.

Afreepress 12 August, 2008, 02:22 Russian peacekeepers are doing the right things. They have intervened when noone else cared enough to do so. They have saved many lives. They are persuing a just cause while the West tries every trick they can find to interfere. Why would the West do this? Because they need a twisted monster like Saakashvilli to do their dirty-work for them. The reason the West is in a panic right now, is because if Russian peacekeepers can take control of Georgia they will find evidence of plots and plans against Russia and it will involve an international conspiracy directed against Russia. Russia must continue to disseminate information through reporters broadcasting eyewitness accounts of the victims of Georgean genocide so that the world will hear the voice of truth. Russia must commit itself to defending it's people and it's territories against agression from globalists from the West who seek to conquor Russia incrementally. The West has recently seen that Russian citizens will work together to defeat a common enemy and that also should be shown to the world through more reports. Many citizens of the U.S.A. are aware of the lies that our news tells us and that is why our government has told us that they intend to shutdown the internet here eventually. We can get news from overseas on the internet and it infuriates them. Russia must remain strong and not cave to pressure from dictators of bankrupt countries. Stay strong Russia!

Slavko 12 August, 2008, 05:55 My new prediction! Russia will slice Georgia in half. Russia will control critical highways and create a check points. They will not capture the cities but implement same strategy like Israel in Gaza and Golan Heights. In case there are guerilla attacks on the Russian forces Russians can further escalate the bombing by creating instant Stone Age technology for Georgia (bridges, power plants .refineries railroad trucks, communication centers an so on). “Israel asserts its right to retain the area under the text of United Nations Security Council Resolution 242, which calls for "safe and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force".n 1981, Israel formally applied its "laws, jurisdiction and administration" to the Golan Heights with the passage of the Golan Heights Law. It is governed since as part of Israel’s North District. This annexation is not internationally recognized[5] and United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 considers the area part of the Israeli occupied territories. like "extending sovereignty," For this reason, the Golan Heights have been a crucial part of peace negotiations between Syria and Israel. When Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin was asked in the Knesset why he was risking international criticism for this annexation, he replied "You use the word annexation, but I am not using it."[21] The governmental Jewish Agency for Israel states that "Although reported as an annexation, it is not: the Golan Heights are not declared to be Israeli territory."[22] On the other hand, the Benjamin Netanyahu government's Basic Policy Guidelines stated "The government views the Golan Heights as essential to the security of the state and its water resources. Retaining Israel's sovereignty over the Golan will be the basis for an arrangement with Syria."[23] The UN did not recognise the "annexation" and they officially consider the Heights to be Israeli occupied. This view was expressed in the unanimous UN Security Council Resolution 497 stating that "the Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legal effect." It, like other relevant UN resolutions takes care to not explicitly call it an "annexation", referring at most to Israel's "annexationist policies." Russia will withdraw from the Georgia only as part a peace deal and Georgian agreement on Russian membership in World Trade Organization. Russia will insist on peace deal accord similar to NATO that enforced on Serbia after the NATO bombing campaign. In a mean time local authorities probably in Abkhazia and South Ossetia will implement “Israeli model of deportation” for any ethnic Georgian in Abkhazia or South Ossetia that is involved in guerrilla war to Georgia. Further more Russia will invest in Abkhazia and South Ossetia like Israel invested in Nahariyya and Haifa in order to populate and protect Abkhazia and South ossetia in the future.

Jeff 12 August, 2008, 06:31 Correct me if I am wrong, but once Russia pushes forth into the sovereighnty of a nation and outside of the conflict zone does it not become the aggressor, and as such is it not commiting international crimes as well. There is no good guy or bad guy in this war your are both as bad as each other. Georgia should of kept the military out of the Ossetia issue, but russia should not have continued an offensive beyond the conflict zone and into Georgian Sovereighn land. This will not make any significant impact on a global level of relations, however i'm awaiting a iran vs USA or a Iran vs Israel conflict or god forbid USA vs Russia. Any of these would be something to truly put fear into our planet.

Ken 12 August, 2008, 07:54 Is it not finally time for the western nations to bite the bullet and boycott Russian oil? This will bring the Bear to its knees economically and teach it the lesson it has never yet learned. I know, this would be much harder for Europe to pull off than America, but if the nations pulled together in a concerted effort, it could be done. It is time to stop drenching Russia with the capital it uses to prop up its dreams of empire. Otherwise, it's Georgia today, Armenia and Ukraine tomorrow. Wake up, West and do what it is in your power to do!

Elena 12 August, 2008, 08:00 The American politicians have brought up the fool a puppet of Saakoshvili. It the coward and dung, on corpses climbs in Europe and the NATO. Why refugees do not run to Georgia, and run to Russia - really the scanty territory of Ossetia and ten thousand refugees in territory of Russia is necessary to the government of Russia? And what interests of national scale at America on mountains in Caucasus - that there is necessary to it?

Ibrahim 12 August, 2008, 08:10 Next time anyone wishes to poke the nose of a bear, they will think twice before doing so. What did the Georgian government actually think they would achieve by provoking the mighty Russians? Besides, anyone who thinks Russia might act in other places of interest will also think twice before sending their sailing off. My advice to the Russians, beware of those about to leave government. To end the violence in Georgia's rep. Be smart and stop provoking innocent people due to greed and inept plans concocted by others not living in the region.

MB 12 August, 2008, 08:10 Each side of this conflic talks about War Crimes. Let's stop this and make all the inquiries. President Sakhasvilli as already accepted the ceased fire. The conflict in Chechenia shown thas crimes where commited by each side of the conflict (Chechenians rebels and Russian Army). Regarding to international laws, South Ossetia and Abkhasia are parts of Georgia. Today Russian UN ambassador asked not for South Ossetia independance, but claims this territory for Russia. If it is the final ground of Russia, Georgia is right to defend is territorial integrity, Russia is the invader. So to Russia (Russian troups are in Georgia, not georgian in Russia)to prove is "bonne volonte". Let's get the cease fire and stop this conflict.

Jimi 12 August, 2008, 08:12 I think best peace solution would be to give South Ossetia and Abkhasia to join Russian federation, and give Georgia its NATO membership. I don't think that NATO membership would be too bad in that case because no NATO country 'defends' a country that attacks to another country (if the country which attacks isn't USA)

DROU 12 August, 2008, 08:42 Only a unqualified recognition Georgia the fault in escalation of violence and immediate voluntary retirement of the government of this country. Also creation of the international tribunal across South Ossetia is necessary. Only acceptance of these measures can stop the further escalation of violence. Unfortunately, the United Nations for today show a full impotence in the decision of any questions.

fred 12 August, 2008, 08:45 to end the violence ? a very simple way : President N.Sarkozy in its name of president in exercise of European Union and in the name of the french republic solemnly recognize the right of Ossets and abkhazian to dispose of themselves of their own will ! after all the symbol of the country i bear a passport from is "Liberté, Egalité , fraternité " (freedom, equality , brotherhood ) . so at least once , words would have some meaning . Kossovo became independent , send troops to separate sides , then later organize a referendum scrutinized by U.N. on the issue , after this the results of polls to be respected by EVERY member of international community ! at the same time stop to play with U.N. = the "useless" thing "some" do not want to hear in the course of some events , and get obfuscated when others remind them of such conduits (yes , i am writing about USA and their puppy : UK)

Hakan 12 August, 2008, 08:46 Nobody in Europe believes state-sponsored propaganda in Russian medias, primitive lies about 'peace enforcement', 'Ossetia genocide' or 'peacekeeping forces'. This is typical USSR-style imperialist policy of killing small democratic nation in order to transform it into a kind of Putinocratic colony of Moscow.

MB 12 August, 2008, 08:47 At this times, Russian troops are far inside Georgian territory : in Gori, and worse, in Senaki, nearer from Turkey border tha Russia border. It's no more a "peace keeper" operation, as Russia officials say. It's an invasion of a free and democratic country. Russia becomes the agressor. It's the right to other democratic countries to act as Russia is the agressor.

Roman 12 August, 2008, 08:51 What is being done is exactly what can be done to end the violence. The Russian response is overall very well balanced, and took into consideration the entire aggressive course of Western politics from the end of the Cold War till today, and the right assessments of its own security interests. The American politics, being pragmatic, will in the end have to accept the new reality that the World is there not to be unilaterally dominated, but shared on equal and just basis with other nations.
