What can be done to end the violence in Georgia’s breakaway republics?
Democrat 12 August, 2008, 09:47 By whatever words u call it, this is a CIA/Israeli sponsored terrorist attack on Russian interests. Remember after 9/11 and its aftermath or the invasion of Iraq on false pretenses.! Why didn't anyone make a hue and cry about sovereignty etc? And Kosovo.and the hanging of Saddam as a war criminal for crimes against its own people. Is Sakhasvilli a lesser monster, just because he represents Neo-con interests…? Why are the Neos of the world not condemning him now? Does not every single individual on this planet have a right to exist peacefully… All Ossetians just as all Iraqis and Afghanis etc have rights as peaceful, democratic nations…Don’t they?

L 12 August, 2008, 09:53 Everything should be stopped in South Ossitia, this is just maddness. Now I'll admit these recent events produce some disturbing information, but what countries media isn't corrupt and doesn't try to make you believe some propaganda. This just needs to stop for the sake of morality and ethics. Both sides argue that they are right, but that's not the point. Innocent lives are being killed. USA should immediately stop interfering in UN efforts, and should condone media stations to stop point the finger at Russia. What little remaining of South Ossetia should receive immediate Worldly (Meaning everyone, especially Georgia and Russia) support to rebuild its city and allow a democratic vote to choose to subside. And everyone on this damn website. Should look up the word DEMOCRACY = for the people, doesn't always mean its right, but it means that they decide on their border. You don't obviously think that American Citizens support Georgian actions or Russia's involvement, just look at how many protesters their or on our streets parading to stop the war. We just want to end conflict. Washington needs to stop its phony war on terror cause its not fooling anyone. We here all feel remorse for the conflict in the Middle East and its people, and willingly want the conflict to end. But have basically shoved the knife as you'd call it so deep that it cannot be pulled out, just don't want to see conflict between two allied nations while it still searches to solve its problems. You guys don't think that everyone is to blame for this an the UN committee should immediately be reviewed?

Fred 12 August, 2008, 10:13 Its pretty clear that Georia's leader miscalculated, & is now trying to involve the US & NATO. Thankfully our leaders have not been stupid enough to fall for it. Germany was also Wise in advising against NATO membership. That membership is to protect countries FROM attack. NOT to support a megalomaniac like Georgias president. Bush & especially Cheney overreacted out of paranoia in their statements, but had the good sense to dispatch Condeleeza. Sadly, Mc Cain BACKED rights for Kosovars when they were suffering & then Hypocritically sided with Georgian warmongers. Sadly, after 9 years of believing in the guy, I now have to admit that this was the final straw for me & even I am going to be voting for Obama in the fall.Mc Cain just seemed to be a troublemaker. It is also important that Abkhazia & Ossettia be recognized, they haveve had their own economies, money & Military alliances for a decade. After all the US did not recognize N. Korea, but had the good sense not to violate the treaty that ended that war. Georgias leader also had a disturbing paralell. He invaded a neighbor, to get back land he claimed his country lost 10 years earlier, just like Hitler did in Czechoslovakia. Its just unacceptable for ANYONE to assist this guy. teh Georgian presidents best shot at avoiding a war crimes trial would be to resign and hand the reigns of power to someone in Georgia who is competent & not a megalomaniac like him. Mind you it would not be a bad precedent if the Georgian presidents own people replaced him, & gave him an extended stay at the hotel silly (the insane asylum) till he gets cured of his megalomania. or exiles him to Elba, like Napoleon. Im just EXTREMELY glad that Russia stopped him before he tried marching across central Asia with his army.

JD 12 August, 2008, 10:54 Georgian aggression in South Ossetia should never go unpurnished. President Medvedev should ensure Mikhail Saakashvili is captured the same way Saddam Hussien was captured by the Americans. He should be brought to trial and executed the same way the Americans executed Saddam. Everything Russia should do should be identical to US style. That makes good TV and would give everyone something to think about. Georgia should be put back on a road to non-pro western but true Pro Georgian democracy. We need peace in Europe and not war, America's strategy is to create instability in every region of the world, and ensure they keep the American people frightened of Russia and Iran. If every American has the right to own a gun to protect himself from an attack (American constitution), why cant every country have the right to Nuclear weapon to protect themselves from Israel and Americans. I see no logic in American foreign policies, only that we are all slaves to America.

Manuel 12 August, 2008, 10:55 Well what can one say? Georgia might be right in claiming its claims on its geographical territory, but there is a way and another. Russia is a world power that has to be respected. I just can’t understand all this fuss about two pieces of land that are negligible for Russia and of such importance to Georgia. Why can different people, be it Russians or Georgians live together in peace? Frankly, I think that Russia over did it, but at the same time I do think that Georgia gave the pretext for Russia to impose it’s control it’s grip on the regions in question.

NickF 12 August, 2008, 11:01 Jeff, your comment, eventually, would be true if Russian army had ambition to occupy Georgian territory, something that didn't happened here. In reality Russian units had destroyed some military facilities inside Georgian territory, used against Russian peacekeepers or civilians in S.Ossetia. Georgian forces conducted attacks with airplanes, helicopters from bases that are very deep in Georgian territory and also conducted attacks with artillery which actually was south of S. Ossetia 10-20 km inside Georgia. Every time Georgian units attack Russian peacekeepers or civilians in S.Ossetia or Abkhazia from inside Georgia, Russian army will be obligated to respond and to try to eliminate the treat of each such unit So you may ask how this kind of attacks can be prevented. I think that at least 2 basic measures could be taken: - prohibit Saakashvili of weapons imports - demilitarized zone in Georgian territory around S. Ossetia, for example 30 km in depth IMHO this would be good first step for the peace in the region.

Ziad 12 August, 2008, 11:21 The violence that took place is nothing but an incident. the problem is the root cause behind this incident. To solve the problem, the root cause must be !!! NO COMMENTS. The Russian government should simply, in my own humble opinion, strike HARDER.

Hiyyavrom 12 August, 2008, 12:58 I believe that frontiers, the last relics of Joseph Stalin's policy to encourage the survival of non-aggressive (non-chauvinistic) elements of minority national cultures, must be reexamined. Today these relics too often dissolve into mini-provinces for the easier economic and cultural exploitation by aggressive "international" cliques. While Stalin's policy had impressive results elsewhere, it clearly failed in the entire Caucasus area. Transcaucasian and Ciscaucasian federation attempts were abandoned too early, probably due to Beria's meddling and maybe even a vestige of Georgian chauvinism still influencing Stalin. Wipe out these borders, but give each cultural group the opportunity to preserve their distinctive ethnic cultures-- if they are vital enough to do so. A dozen more mini-states in Caucasia will be a threat to peace that will make the Balkans look like the Garden of Eden. In the current social and cultural configuration of "the world", the autonomous republics and regions have about as much sense and effect as the "Indian reservations" in the United States.

Pason 12 August, 2008, 13:16 It is now IMPERATIVE that a thorough documentation of all civilian causulties and damages to property is made. Preferably by trained investigators, and if possible, invite some independent investigators from "neutral" countries also. Let's show the war criminals in the White House that two can play the "moral upper hand"-game and let us see how much egg Mr Bush's face can hold.

aleksander 12 August, 2008, 14:17 I think that the key to the end of this war, or any agressive behaviour, is the openess of information. In times of war, the important media (TV, radio, main journals) become, transform themeselves in tools of war. Georgia appears as invader and even as genocider to Russians, "thanks to" Russian main TV media (like RTR Planeta), but according to Georgian and Western media it was Russian forces stationed in Ossetia who harassed neighbouring Georgian villages, like Hamas harasses Israël by their home-made rockets. The Georgians, in despair, broke through this humiliating harassing and attaqued Ossetia. The two sides of conflict have thus a diametrically different, hostile view of each other and they continue fighting each other, seeing the rival as the incarnation of evil.

Edwin 12 August, 2008, 15:25 I am an Afrika young man currently residing in the united states of American and very saddened by the loss of life in the caucuses (South Ossetia). This reminds me of the post_election violence and genocide in Rwanda, and continuing genocide in Darfur. I would love to send some donations ($$), and even write letters to some of the families that lost their loved ones. I am especially concerned about the lady that had her dead son in the basement for days before the Russian troops(God bless them), came and rescued them. I would love to say that I am so sorry for her loss, and that God will give her retribution for her loss. I was looking at the older people, all confused, bruised and so scared. My God, how can human beings do this to each other. How savage have we gotten that we can inflict such pain to innocent people. Politics aside, I totally respect "The bear - Dmitry Medvedev" for his strong and resolved support for the poor folks of South Ossetia. I couldn't say enought about the love and concern that Mr. Vladimir Putin exhibited by leaving the pomp and ceremonies of Beijing Olympics, with jeans and a simple jacket and flying to North Ossetia immediately to be with the scared families. I saw bodies of women and children in the streets, OMG!, that is a taboo. Women and children are never to be touched. NEVER touch the women and children. I also want to say something about Mr. Vitaly Churkin. I think he has so far been the ONLY forthcoming member of the security council. He has truthfully addressed the issues as they have happened on the ground, and that with resolve, fortitude and assertively. He is truly a great diplomat needless to say. How can we judge russia for going into South Ossetia, When in 1983, U.S. troops invaded Granada, shortly after a coup d’état overthrew president Maurice Bishop. According to Ronald Reagan, Granada –a 340 square kilometer island with 110,000 inhabitants– represented a military threat to the United States. Reagan expressed concerns over an airport that Cuban workers were constructing to foster tourism. Following the invasion, the United States announced its decision to finish the construction of the airport…to foster tourism - What a double standard!! God will bless those who are persectued, and those who do justice. God bless RUSSIA!!!

George 12 August, 2008, 16:09 Are people so far off reality? Do we close our eyes to reality and international goals of some western countries and their leaders? Georgia must be set back to nomality and Russia suppost to get all internatinal help. We talk about terror in all regions - but western media is ignoring the terror of Georgia against their own people and against the people of Russia. We - in the western world - shall be very careful with information given to us through our own channels. I hope that Russia will succed it's fight against the terror in Georgia.

Warsawer 12 August, 2008, 16:09 Without judging the war itself, I'd like to emphasize two side effects of Russian intervention in Georgia that Kremlin will need to deal with in the future: First and foremost, this war made John McCain, staunch critic of Putin's administration, look more optimistic to the future. American citizens seeing return to the Cold War rhetoric in recent days, will certainly trust Republican candidate more than they did before. Even Obama might change his opinion on Russia - as his top foreign affairs advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski compared today's Georgia with Finland in 1939 under Soviet invasion. Secondly, anti-Russian sentiments in Central and Eastern Europe emerged again. Chances of Poland joining the US anti-missile shield programme have risen dramatically, and even usually cautious Polish PM Tusk admitted it in today's press conference. If Moscow's intention was to gain the upper hand in this region- it certainly lost.

Freedom_Forever 12 August, 2008, 16:14 How many times does America have to be directly involved in destabilizing sovereign countries for their own gain before someone stops it. There is no doubt in my mind that this entire conflict has Made in the USA" all over it. Russia has just as much right to protect it's interests as America claims it does. Have we forgotten about the Cuban Missile crisis so soon. Wake up Russian, they are right in your back yard. The solution here is to not quit until the Georgian forces are COMPLETELY disarmed. I mean not even a air pistol left among them. By doing this you not only prevent further atrocities from Georgian troops, you will also make other countries think twice before becoming pawns of the most destructive American administration in history. Thank you RT for giving some of us here in America a better perspective of what is actually happening.
