Pauline 16 December, 2008, 00:34 I have five "men of the year", actually: Vladimir Putin/Dmitriy Medvedev, for not caving in to Saakashvilli and his backers; Hu Jin Tao for the way he led the Chinese people in the face of that earthquake and still held the most incredible Olympics, very impressive (and that hit a nerve with me after Katrina); and Barack Obama, for having the courage to put himself on the line, and take new territory, even if he is a centrist.and the guy who threw the shoe at Mr. Bush in Iraq.

russya 16 December, 2008, 01:41 Vladimir Putin, no doubt. Medvedev hasnt been president long enough to qualify although he has been doing a great job I think considering he hasnt been president of Russia for a year yet. He could communicate a bit more firmly though I think he gets a bit squishy sometimes. I think the whole world is changing at the moment and although Putin is far from the only force that is trying to shape a new world I think he definately made huge contributions to allow Russia to become a part of the shaping of a new world diplomatically and economically.

Sevodnya_Net 16 December, 2008, 11:49 The chap who threw his shoes at George Bush gets my vote too. His name is Muntadar al-Zaidi. And I suspect he will actually win some real-life "awards", too. And an honourable mention for the brave bloke who heckled Medvedev (just to even things up - anyone knows his name?)

Michael 16 December, 2008, 15:43 Mr Sept Blatter needs to spend more time in South Africa before making comments on the the crime in South Africa before 2010 Soccer World Cup. Out breaks of Cholera from Zimbabwe are now filtering threw to the Western Cape. The political intolerance between the ruling party ANC and the break away party COPE. With next years election there will be violence in the streets in South Africa 2009. Yesterday a Bed and Breakfast Lodge 3 armed men stormed the Lodge during the day and hacked an American tourist with a machette stealing his money and Mobile. This is a daily occurence all over South Africa. Last week the National Taxi Associtation said they will make South Africa ungovernable if the where not included into the RTA (rapid taxi associtation) for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Just a warning to Soccer Fans who come to SA during the 2010 World Cup, you will be robbed and the chances are violently.

My vote is for Barack Obama precisely because he *is* a centrist. I do not believe that the US will ever become a Socialist country any more than Russia (or China, for that matter) will totally abandon her Socialist background. . Jim (a loyal American)

Sanjay 18 December, 2008, 03:14 Ben Bernanke is the person of the year. The Federal Reserve dictates who gets elected and who does not by controlling the money supply and to whom does the money go. I am really disenchanted with Putin. His cronies Kudrin, Shuvalov Chubais are bleeding Russia white. 100 Billion $ have already left russia under the guise of stabilizing ruble. Had this money been invested in infrastructure projects, roads rail, airports seaports, electrification, sewage systems etc it would have improved quality of life. Instead, Kudrin laundered all this money. Full convertibilty of ruble into dollar is a most catastrophic decision these fradusters have made. The entire banking system is rotten.
