Why are there so many acts of Somali piracy?
Michal 20 November, 2008, 16:40 For me it is pretty sad that pirates still exist in the civilized world - hope Nieustraszony will kick those thiefs.

Shaun 26 November, 2008, 18:03 Make no mistake, the reason it's still happening is that no one is seriously trying to stop it. The same thing used to happen to aircraft, until some one made the mistake, of hijacking an Israeli airliner. They simply stormed it, end of story. Forget human rights for the pirates, blow a few of them out of the water and it will stop.

Jean-Claude 26 November, 2008, 18:05 Something looks very streange about the whole affair: the navies of all those sophisticated countries which seems helpless, the price of oil and gas going down and the political hypocrisy seen world-wide every day. What else !!!

Sam 30 November, 2008, 08:02 The answer is simple. You have a country with no real government bordering one of the most important sea routes in the would. Just what do you expect? The whole of Somalia is a safe haven for the pirates. I would rather discuss the solution to this problem. Short term is to pool the ships leaving the canal into a convoy, and then escort them past the danger zone as was done with convoys during the WWII. Its better to sit and wait for the convoy to be full rather then taking an attack by the pirates. In addition, marines should be placed on each ship in the convoy defend it from being boarded by smaller boats. The warships then do the same on their return journey to the canal, providing protection to the convoy heading to the canal. Long term solution is Somalia itself. That country’s problems are not an internal matter any more. It can not be solved by Somalis. A golden opportunity was missed when Ethiopians kicked the extremists and warlords to a corner down south. Now they are going home leaving behind 3,500 African union peacekeeping force at the mercy of the same extremists. It is time to aid the African Union troops not only to provide protection for Mogadishu, but to bring stability and disarm the whole nation and put it under UN administration until a proper government, military and police force are created. This is not an African problem like most countries would like to think. You want your ships and international trade to be safe you just have to overturn your attitude to problems in Africa. Its time for the whole would to cooperate in the solution not only at sea but on land too. Sitting in to departure lounge at Lagos airport this Friday, I was discussing African problems with a Nigerian and a White South African, I was impressed how much they agreed with themselves, be it on the treatment of whites in Zimbabwe or the Congo. One thing the South African said that rang truth- “ the world should stop seeing what they can get out of African and for a change give something back, we do not want their bloody aid, we want stability to make ourselves rich so we can provide for ourselves and we do have the brains and resources to do it” Have to agree with him. The crisis of Africa usually originates or supported by countries outside of Africa. They have the resources and the manpower to making themselves great if given the chance. All their brains are out of Africa. It’s really fun actually. I remember a knee replacement surgery performed by a Nigerian professor of orthopaedics and another Nigerian surgeon assisting him. The anaesthetist was also a Nigerian. The patient was a Nigerian millionaire. This operation was done in East London. Why is that? Because in the whole of Nigeria there are hardly any centres that have the facilities to do a simple operation like a joint replacment.Taking in account that Nigeria is one of the most stable and richest African countries, which is sad. Somalia should be the first step for the world to show that its attitudes towards Africa has changed and help the African Union with the finance and military assistance to stop the human crisis that is Somalia and not just think on how to get their ships past Somali territorial waters.

Saiftey 30 November, 2008, 15:14 These pirates have been there for more then 7 years; stealing small boats. Now they are stealing cargo boats over 330M in length. People need to start asking some important questions instead of eating what CNN/Fox feeds them. Where are they getting the weapons? Where were they trained? Where did the get the money for supplies? Why did they, out of nowhere, start hijacking giant ships? My guess is they are trained by the US to try and discover illegal weapon shipments. Maybe thats why the US doesn't want to confront them as it shouldn't be hard. Now that Russia is planning to send one of their top warships I would like to see how the US will take this. What are these so called pirates looking for?

David 1 December, 2008, 21:42 I wonder why USA doesn't send in Steven Seagal or Sylvester Styllone - they have managed, by themselves to sort out whole nations - to sort out a few marauding pirates?

Mimi 7 December, 2008, 08:08 The pirates are holding PEOPLE hostage and the ships with a lot of oil belonging to Saudi Arabia. They have already paid a lot of ransom money to these pirates. The rule of the seas is, that ships cannot have weapons on board, they need to change that, so they can blow these pirates out of the water. Many different countries have been bothered by these pirates from Somalia. Which country shouls make a stop to this insanity.

DavidQ 8 December, 2008, 21:33 If all ships are to be armed to the teeth. Don't forget to arm the ports also. Are you might be in for a suprise attack on your ports. As a conservative america I do not like the liberal agendas being push by the UN. The liberal stupid Russia government is just to blame for the ban on arms on ships as the liberal USA. Like good brainwash UN liberal socialist rats. That control the world. Just look at a world map. Most countries our liberal, socialist, leftwing brainwash idots. You liberal complain about your own world. Even all US president have been liberal, socialist going back to Woodrow Wilson 1901. And you liberals do a piss pour job of fighting among yourselves. Nagging like a bunch of old ladies.

twotins 13 December, 2008, 15:31 It appears to me that Defense Sec Robert Gates explained all in this latest statement from Bahrain.1;tighter control of world shipping under US security guidance.2; naval bases in Somalia to control the mouth of the Gulf of Aden. While the 'free' world rejoices at the reduction in oil and gas prices our elitist controllers tighten their grip on the movement of oil and all other vital commodities under the same old banner - free trade and democracy.

ergatis 13 December, 2008, 16:46 It is a shame for the civilized world. I am sure that behind the pirates are people in corrupt African governments that support the pirates, off-shore banks of Africa that provides place to hide their money (I know two such banks in Nigeria but there are no proofs. ) and probably a mafia that buys and "recirculates" the stolen goods. I also suspect that none wants to catch them as they are a perfect excuse for foreign naval presence in the area. Before the pirates, I wondered when Russia will start . to play dirty like NATO and I was very disappointed! But finally "Uncle Vladimir" made me VERY proud!!! Realy. Slavshya Oteshestvo, Nashe Svobodnoye!!!

Sam 14 December, 2008, 07:00 twotins why should world shipping be controlled? What has control of shipping got to do with their safety and why should it be under the US security guidance? The US had been in the Somali waters for ages yet it seems that the Indians are doing a much better job as least on two occasions now.I would say if world shipping is to be under anyone's security guidance, then the Indians are more qualified. As for the naval bases, well no one is stopping the Americans, trouble is that the last time they went into Somalia, all they could do was create a scenario for the film "Black Hawk Down" and left.More over, Modern warships can remain at sea for ages and really do not need a naval base near an area of conflict. What is really needed is an international effort which more likely needs to be military,to bring stability to Somalia.

Ivor 31 December, 2008, 18:20 It is easy for the pirates as noboby seems to care. Why are the ships not armed easpecially with rocket launchers. Its the same with drug growing in Afganistan. It would be so easy to wipe out all the drugs but it is not allowed as it keeps the Taiban with money to buy USA weapons of mass destruction.

Aryan_Indian 7 January, 2009, 03:55 US left nothing for Somali people after the Illegal war, Somali people has nothing else but to loot, to rob the people who robbed them from everything. Somalia was one of the poorest and most starved nation on the earth, and US went to war with them and taken everything they can get their hands on while flying in their Black Hawks. UK did the same thing to India, before 1997 independence, SHIPS bigger then Titanic (which was sank in 1914 and now it is 1940's) used to leave Indian ports filled with GOLD,GEMS,DIAMONDS, ANCIENT ARTIFACTS, and what not, UK literally LOOTED India before giving Independence. Same thing US did to Somalia. India and Indian people had courage to Change the economy in 60 years that India can NOW BUY Jaguar and Land Rover, (British Company which their QUEEN uses) But unfortunately Somalian people dont have any other choice left but Rob and Loot these ships, this is the protest against the world for NOT STOPPING US BASTARD from robbing their country. Look at the CUBA, N.KOREA,Haiti, all are result of USA. War, Economic sanctions or International Isolation, call whatever you want, but they literally DESTROYING NATIONS. Latest Example is 8 Congress man asked INDIAN company to STOP doing business with Iran. take a look, US and their people are SHOWING their UGLIEST face EVER. I am afraid but may be IRAN, CUBA, N.KOREA, every body should start PIRATING THESE SHIPS? After all their nation got PIRATED BY US ANYWAYS, ONE WAY OR OTHER.

Pauline 13 January, 2009, 00:07 When China made gas deals with Sudan, they wanted to start some military thing in Africa, some "Afscom"or something. In the wake of the invasion and occupation of Iraq, no one would have them, saying that everywhere the US went, there was war and destruction. Ergo, could it be that Somali pirates are the excuse our dear elite wants? I hope Russia, China, India etc. do not give any one power control over shipping lanes. In a global economy we ALL need to build MUCH more bilateral and multi-lateral things, not less.
