Violent protests in Chile

A demonstration marking the sixth anniversary of the death of an indigenous student shot by police ended in violence in the Chilean capital on Friday. Protesters set a bank's cash machine on fire and burned barricades in the middle of the streets in Santiago. Water-cannon trucks sprayed water at the protesters and police made a number of arrests.

Catrileo was a 22 year-old student who was shot by police in 2008 during an attempt by Mapuche Indians to reclaim farmland they said belonged to their ancestors. The police officer who shot him was convicted of unnecessary violence, but was never jailed and he was allowed to remain on the police force. He was dismissed in January 2013, hours after Chile's Comptroller General ruled that an officer can be fired for simply damaging the image of the national police force.
