Authorities euthanize over 20 beached pilot whales in New Zealand

06.01.2014 14:00

Golden Bay, Farewell Spit in New Zealand is notorious for whale strandings. The county's Department of Conservation (DOC) said 39 pilot whales washed up there at the weekend and became trapped by a falling tide. 27 are said to have survived until the morning but as reflotation appeared impossible, officials decided to shoot the animals.

Sadly, the bodyweight of the whale is enough to cause it to slowly suffocate, you couldnt pick one up without putting a sling under its full length and equipment access would be a problem ,they are reliant on water around them to support them.Shooting them is the kindest thing as otherwise they would suffer a slow death.
