The upper chamber of the Russian Parliament, the Federation Council, has ratified the treaties of friendship, co-operation and mutual assistance with the Republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Georgia has confirmed the death of one of its policemen in the border area with Abkhazia. Earlier Abkhaz officials said that one Georgian man was killed and two more injured in clashes with Abkhazian border guards.

EU and UN envoys are on a visit to Abkhazia ahead of next week's international consultation on the Caucasus, where Abkhazia wants to participate as an equal partner.
