Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has recalled his ambassador to the UK in order to discuss the case of Julian Assange. The asylum bid is being analyzed without concession to foreign pressure, but with caution to “other countries’” opinions.

BTW, a wikileaks cable sheds some light on how the US, UK and other countries are likely viewing this situation.
Cable 09STATE11 9085 lays out procedures for how the US State Department deals with "walk-ins" -- people wishing to defect, provide intelligence, or requesting asylum:
Section E. 40
"A walk-in may request "asylum" in an embassy based on the erroneous belief that safe passage out of the host country will be assured if the request is granted. While a few mostly Latin American countries recognize such a right of "diplomatic asylum," the United States and most other countries do not recognize that concept or accept that the granting of refuge in an embassy is an authorized use of diplomatic facilities."
Is this from Wikileaks or Wikipedia?
Th is also provides a clue why Assange chose Ecuador. Besides his friendship with Correa, Ecuador may be one of the "few mostly Latin American counties" that are willing to grant "diplomatic asylum."
I thinks friendship has nothing to do with it and that we have to congratulate the Ecuadorian secret sevice for the clever way they managed to get their hands on Assange.
Have you read any of the cables? There is no doubt they are genuine. They paint such an embarrassing picture of the blind hubris, ignorance, immature gossip, and outright paranoia of US diplomacy, that it is hard to imagine how the US would stand to gain propaganda-wise. It also doesn't explain why US-client governments and financial institutions have sincerely tried to shut down wikileaks.
So metimes things are actually what they seem.
Is there anyway of getting around reading these cables? They have been plasterd over every western newspaper since this hype began. This should have made people suspicious but it didn't. The nature of the cables is usualy very insulting to leaders and countries that are on the US target list. This also should have made people suspicious. The 'pressure' and the persecution that is aimed at assange is competely fake and has the purpose of getting people to rally behind Assange and create as much paranoia as it possible can. As you have seen in the comment that RT removed from this site the US has no intention of arresting Assange for anything, not even in the US itself. There is no warrant for his arrest and there never will be. I can assure you they have no intention of arresting their own guy.Read this CNN article that is trying to force close ties between Assange and Correa.http://editio n.cnn.com/2012/06/20 /world/assange-why-e cuador/index.html
N ow isn't that suspicious? Also note the phrase:"Assange is not currently facing criminal charges in the U.S"If things are exactly what they seem, why is the US and it's newspapers creating this image of a persecuted Assange when they really have no interrest in getting their hands on him at all. I can tell you. They want to create your messiah so you can worship him and believe in him and do everything he says. The have created their own enemy for you to follow.I;m affraid a lot of you will oblige them there.

whether Assange is truly guilty of the alleged rape charges or not, whether Bradley Manning is a patsy or not (as most likely Assange will become- shades of Lee Harvey Oswald), there is just so much more behind the authenticity (or lack there of) of Wikileaks, Assange, Manning, etc. than we can even BEGIN to imagine- the world of geopolitics is just so incredibly sinister... just for starters: read Judyth Vary Baker's "Me and Lee" about the many "outward" political faces of Oswald (had nothing to do with his real entity) and then just try to relate who/what may be behind the outward MSM image of Assange- I don't have the answer and I'm sure you don't either- it simply has to be something else than portrayed by the media
Should have chosen Venezuela (unregistered)23.06.2012 22:27
Assange made an awful mistake by flying to the UK. Had he gone from Sweden to Venezuela, he would have never been arrested, let alone extradited. He chose wrongly again Ecuador.
Venezuela has elections within 3 months and Chavez would have adopted him straightaway, and I mean straightaway., without questions and without deliberation or "consultation" with outher countries. Wrong move from Assange. It is going to cost him life at Guantanamo
What he needs is a human rights lawyer like me,and the support of Amnesty International and Liberty and the BBC. Britain has more rich foreign criminals and deposed dictators than any other nation, and Tony`s whole career was built on standing up to Uncle Sam.
I'm not sure that Ecuador is able to do that but China or Russia should give him asylum because, as we can all witness, his own state is piece of s.it. Including Australian puppet government and some rag doll which pretends to be the PM of independent country. Americans protect their own worst maniacs and killers everywhere in the world, states like Australia not even their own honest citizens.
József Mindszenty (look him up) was stuck at the US embassy in Hungary for 15 YEARS, because the Communist officials at the time would not guarantee safe passage out of the country. If the UK authorities remain committed to catching him the moment he leaves the embassy, Assange would have to remain in the Ecuador embassy in much the same way as József Mindszenty. The only leaks he would ever obtain are of Ecuadorian state secrets, the revelation of which would offend his gracious hosts. If the USA wants him imprisoned, then they cannot hope for a better arrangement. Assange gets locked up in a building with no chance of getting out, and it is for Ecuador's taxpayers, not those of the US, to carry the costs for his upkeep.
Mr Assange risks shooting himself in the foot here.
Assange if fighting going to Sweden because they have an extradition wit h the USA, yet he came to the UK who have an extradition treaty with the USA and is happy to go to Ecuador who again have an extradition treaty with the USA, but they don't come under the European Arrest Warrant issued by Sweden, who is he really afraid of, and why did he not pick an country that does NOT have extradition to the USA
yeah may be if Ecuador does not accept him as a political refugee,he couldask other leftist countries like Venezuela or better,Cuba.I am sure that F.Castro loves what J.Assange has done, unmasking the capitalist monsterand its collateral damages. How come the US want to bring home all the "badguys" of the world,Colombian/Mexi can drug lords, the Russian citizen Viktor Bout, are they trying to open a museum sometimes soon? There should be real criminals, terrorists like Luis Posada Cariles, but oh sorry,he is free in Miami, and bloody dictators friends of the US...(Welcome A.Somoza)
