TEPCO fears 3-cm hole in Fukushima reactor No.2

30.01.2014 18:36

The suppression pool of the Fukushima Daiichi Unit No. 2 reactor may have a 3-centimeter hole in it, through which the highly radioactive water might be leaking out, the plant operator said.

Just some stats to be clear. The radiation in the spent fuel and contaminated material at Fukushima is maybe roughly equivalent to 6000 Hiroshima bombs. All the radiation released by US nuke tests in the Pacific was something like 7000. Unlike the radiation from an atom bomb however, it is concentrated in one place, not blown away in the wind. Nothing they can do with underground "engineered barriers" will ultimately keep it out of the ground water. I sincerely doubt it will cause "the Pacific Rim to become a dead zone." I wouldn't be placing any bets on Tokyo in the longer term, however.

@Richard
"I t is killing the entire Pacific Ocean!"

Since Woods Hole oceanographers have yet to find a trace of Fukushima cesium along the West Coast (although it is one of the most minutely detectable substances on Earth), do you think you are being a bit hyperbolic?

Marine scientists have found bluefin tuna off the West Coast of the United States which are carrying radioactive cesium from Fukushima Daiichi.

Ladies and gentlemen, the problem is really severe but it's important that you understand the parameters. It is not "killing the Pacific Ocean." Hydrogen bombs were exploded by the hundreds in the Pacific and it isn't dead yet. The key is to get these government/nuke industry relationships untangled and transition as quickly as possible to clean power. These nuke plants need to be shut down. All of them.

Time for the world to start filing lawsuits in international court and take control of this mess before the Pacific rim becomes a dead zone. The Japanese mentality has put half the world at threat. Another failed society.

If the experts are thrown by what has happened here the rest of the world should know now. Leaks and melting are not encouraging words.

Tokyo Electric to look for more leaks at Fukushima reactor
Jan. 30, 2014 NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation)
Tok yo Electric is slowly finding out more about the damage at the reactor containment vessel. The destruction was caused by 2011 accident.

T okyo Electric has reached an estimate that up to 3.3 tons of water per hour is leaking from the 2 leaks.
Tokyo Electric is pouring 4.5 tons of cooling water an hour into the reactor. This means more than 1 ton of water may be leaking from unknown holes or cracks, as the water does NOT stay in the reactor containment vessel.

Atomick Rabbit. They can tell you where all of the radiation orginates from by its rate of disingration. They they arnt telling u about fukushima isnt strange. It funny how they want you to believe that blowing up one bomb is was worse in contaminating the world then fukushima. I have even heard one "expert" say that even if all the nuclear material got into the ocean we would still be ok. The misinformation is crazy. You have to read up on radiation and radioactive materials to get an understanding. Read up on Chernobyl. Hard to know what to believe.

Never any thing good out of Fukushima. How are they cooling the "rods" by putting water over them? They are no longer rods if they melted, and these leaks are only the tip of the iceberg.

No sense in crying now, the damage is done and before they fix the problem we will be seeing the side effects of radioactive rain, not fall out, but radioactive rain that came from radioactive water. Most of what they talk about is a smoke screen. We are screwed and it seems like most are just hoping that we are wrong or that it will take 30 years instead of the 3-5 in which the signs will start showing. Stupid.

"Since the March 2011 disaster, the leakage of radiation-contaminat ed water has posed a major threat to Japan’s population and environment, and to the international community."

Not really, but if it contributes to the ongoing RT meme of "Nuclear Bad - except Russian Nuclear", then run with it.
