Georgian officer flees to Russia

A Georgian navy lieutenant, Alik Bzhania, who defected to Russia seeking political asylum, has said his decision was prompted not by fear of threats, but disagreement with Georgian President Saakashvili’s policies.
Maybe he does not want to get shot resisting arrest after another failed coup attempt like what happened to some of his brothers in arms
Maybe, Traitor sounds like a good word......In the future, how could this man live with his conscience that he betrayed his fatherland? He wasn't worth it! His family should be ashamed!! He BETRAYED his people! Let him live with Peter!
It seems like Georgians will have a really hard time in the future given the ongoing dispute with Russia. As more they press against Russia as greater the sufferings they will be faced against throughout the decades that come. Georgian people should keep that in their mind! The following is to be understood: It is not all about South Ossetia and Abhazia (as they are lost forever), but the real issue is whether the Georgian nation as a whole will survive at all. Think about that Georgians!
@sierra nevada Seeing how the top post of the Georgian government are controlled by Israeli, Americans and British interests as wellk as the media it's not exactly Georgian. http://www.larouchepub.com/pr/2008/080813moloch_brown.html http://www.larouchepub.com/pr/2008/080812brit_soros_stooges.html
He is only a traitor if he passed any secrets to the Russians. I do not see what secrets he has taking his rank that the Russians do not know already. He is a deserter and a defector but certainly not a traitor. He is no different from the hundreds of American troops that asked for asylum from Canada and Germany, or even the Russian junior Sergeant that defected to Georgia. He can only become a traitor if Georgia again picks a fight with Russia and he takes up arms against Georgia. Even then it may be different to distinguish him from the thousands of ethnic Georgian officers and men in the Russian federation armed forces.
Sam - The guy is a traitor. Vladimir - All the Georgians have to do is wait Russia out. With their mortality rate and status as essentually a 3rd world country, Russia may bark but truly has a minimal bite (other than robbing banks in Georgia). Over the next 10 - 15 years they will be controlled/overwhelmed by by the chinese, muslims or both. Johnx - See comments directed to Vladimir.
I like waiting, its harmless, as opposed to killing civilians, Georgia, keep waiting, and waiting and waiting.and waiting and waiting... enjoy!
Steve, Well that makes all the Americans that deserted cos they they do not want to fight in Iraq traitors too. Ah the good old mortality myth again. Exactly which mortality figures are you referring to? But if you want Georgia to wait it out, sorry Georgia will be gone first as both the Infant mortality rate and death rate are about the same. However Georgia has a further drop in population due to migration which Russia does not have. We are not even taking about the population size. Russia basher like coming on without even bothering to check their figure first, does not make you look go matey.
What will be the outcome of the Georgian-Ossetian war? What will be the outcome of this conflict? I study the Bible and have found out that at the appointed time Russia will return. (Daniel 11:29a) This prophecy has started to be fulfilled (the future will reveal if Russia returns on a big or small scale). After that, "the king of the north" (Russia) will come somewhere into the south. Many indicate that this might be Georgia (Georgia and Russia already are preparing for another war). When this happens, according to the biblical foretelling, the West will come against Russia. (Daniel 11:29b,30) At that time, peace will be taken from the earth and the "great sword" – nuclear sword - will be used. (Revelation 6:4) However, it will be neither the great tribulation nor "the end of the world" (Armageddon). As Jesus foretold, that will be "the beginning of birth pains". (Mathew 24:7,8) Then the grievous times will begin.

It is some kind of payback, isn't it? Looks like Georgia and Russia exchange fugitives.
