January 06, 2010 03:07

Oh the irony! How on earth did the reporter kept a straight face when saying this?! 'The first Caucasian news channel said it would not feature any propaganda, just news from Georgia... but its rhetoric is hardly different from that of the Georgian government.'

Nothing wrong with media competition. However, if the Georgian TV channel turns into a nest of blatantly vile anti-Russian propaganda, then this opens up a new headaches for the Georgians. I am not sure what the Georgians hope to gain by these broadcasts since the Abxhazians and Ossetians will never be convinced to return back into the arms of Mother Georgia. Perhaps the purpose is to irritate the Russians Of course, the CIA could use the broadcasts to agitate unrest in the Russian Federation. Then, the Russians can utilize the precedent established by America when it attacked the Serb TV station killing numerous young staffers - their only crime being that they were broadcasting patriotic music to keep up the spirits of the Serb people as America dropped bombs on the defenseless Serb people. If the Georgian station's purpose is to spread anti-Russian propaganda, a few cruise missiles will shut them down. Then of course, those two old drooling grandpas, McCain and Lugar, will be running around the Senate hallways screaming "we are all Georgians today".

I can already see a real danger that Russia will fall into a trap of media lies and deceit. First, this channel has lot of money and lot of PR and the target is Russia! Take that as a given. Second, one must keep in mind that Russia cannot respond this in piecemeal fashion. Russia needs its own media strategy and must offer alterative views to the same targeted audience. Russia was caught flatfooted in the media wars during the Ossetia/Abkhazia/Geo rgia war. Russia must learn the lesson of that media war. Also Russia must avoid responding reactively. Medvedev wasted, in my, his first year in office by trying to show to the Western media that he is not like Vladimir Putin- it will be shame if he must now show that he is not like Vladimir Lenin!

I haven't seen this channel so cannot comment on it, but just take a look at the page on your website hosting the story: Saakashvili should be tried for war crimes" ..."is a drug abuser says ..." etc etc etc. And you wonder why your neighbours feel the need to respond. Have you no sense of irony at all :-)

So, George Soros goes on air in Russian language. At least few extra poor Georgians will get employment through Soros foundation but how many people will watch this Channal that's another dilema for Soros.

Good news, bad description. Why is that some Russian "experts" consider this an attack? Russian news have been broadcasted in Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Moldova etc since 1991. Why is that a Georgian TV broadcasting in Russia is wrong? If Russian news are presenting world news truthfully, they have nothing to fear.
