It is a nice idea but there is a problem of trust since the Americans unilaterally walked away from the treaties agreed with the Soviet Union/Russia so that they could pursue their missile defence program. On the other hand, Russia could encourage a deal with the EU, leaving the Americans out of the equation - but a treaty with the EU could include any parts of the missile defence system sited within EU states.

Its a good idea for europe to stand to gether both econimically and military. Always seems like Russia want to stand on its own though for some reason, thats the impression they give. If western Europe have to choose between Russia and the US, i belive they will choose the US though. I think the way Russia display their power is a little aggressive for our taste some times and the promise of protection from the US lure people in towards them. Not only does Russia send bombers and fighters accross the boarders of other nations, we also have to pay to clear up waste fillings of chemical and nuclear waste so conventiantly placed by the russians right up to the country boarder of other countries. When i served in the airforce i saw this happening, along with Russian diplomats doing their little spy runs around the base with us following them close by to make sure they didnt do any thing fishy. Their acts arent exactly friendly in nature, though we have a good relationship when it come to medical research for some reason. But scientists are a breed of their own and have to time for political diplomacy.
