Russia is planning to increase its efforts to fight pirates plaguing the waters around the Horn of Africa. An international force of more than a dozen vessels is already stationed there and will be joined by more from Russia next year.
Russia may send its state-of-the-art warship, the Yaroslav Mudry, to the pirate-infested waters off the coast of Somalia. It’s still at the shipyard, but naval sources expect it to be fully built and ready for service by next spring.
The Ukrainian vessel “Faina”, carrying military equipment, including 33 tanks, has been seized by pirates off the African coast. The country's Foreign Ministry says there are at least 21 people on board the ship taken off the coast of Kenya.

The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution aimed at tackling piracy off the coast of Somalia. Anyone bringing weapons into the country could now have their assets frozen and face travel restrictions.
