Know your ‘troll’: UK considers law disclosing users` identities

June 12, 2012 16:03

British internet users may soon have an opportunity of meeting those who ‘troll’ them face to face. The parliament is considering a legislation making website operators to identify users posting defamatory comments.

The UK is an advanced fascist police state, beyond any doubt. They can't possibly sink any lower already. Take away their banking casinos and all that's left is their police/surveillance infrastructure. A dying nation in the grip of financial ruin. Pathetic.

And you will not be able to call Israel an "Apartheid" state that willfully executes it's neighbors. Anti-semitism! Let's not mention ZATO either.

Isn't this the kind of actions that the West and other NATO allies criticise China for? Censoring the internet?

This is so typical of a Gov that has no idea how or why it should legislate the internet. And besides this this is just another form of Censorship. Let me tell you that Trolling existed in the days of CB radio here far more so. No one was bothered then.......So to sum up, 'Grow a pair or get off the internet'. squit happens.

It's usually an indication of a government's real intent when they trumpet the claim of protecting rights of web users. Nothing to do with that and everything to do  with monitoring what individuals do on the internet.  Having failed to get unity in Europe to push through these measures, the British are now trying a different route. Unfortunately, I don't think they have a parliament that will reject these measures for what they are.  Vigilance and exposure is the way to hobble such proposals.

Trolling is Victimless... Disclosing your Identity rarely is...

(what are they trying to do, make murder even MORE common, by giving pout names & addresses???)

The present law allows for web providers to be sued for postings on their sight.Obviously this is stupid and should be repealed. The proposal would be fairer if the complainant first must obtain a judicial verdict that there was a case to be answered.Once a name is out there reprisal are inevitable.

This isn't about run-of-the-mill trolling, it's about people seriously trying to hurt others over the internet. I understand the concern that the law could be misused to infringe on someone's privacy, and maybe it will be voted down or repealed, but at the very least this problem is now being addressed. There has to be a line drawn somewhere between light-hearted trolling and online bullying. And don't give me this line that people need to "toughen-up" or "just deal with it." We've read about too many suicides and too many people having their reputations and lives destroyed by online sociopaths. Don't like the law? Maybe YOU need to toughen up and just deal with it.

Folks, listen carefuly for i will only say this once..lol, seriously, this like certain other laws are made to shut you up from speaking against zionists, they make it out to be something else, that is why there are certain laws in certain countries forbidding you to say anything against jews or else you will get locked up.

This is about demolishing peoples right to freedom of speech against zionists and there lackeys and nothing more no matter how beneficial to you it sounds.

Is this defamatory?

"British are opportunistic liars who have institutionalized the double standard and hypocrisy to the point that as a society they are completely amoral and as such should never be trusted"

If this comment is defamatory, who's reputation has been "seriously harmed"?  All of the UK? Or some spiteful little British grifter who will use these rules to blackmail people?

One thing is for sure, if the British decide to go through with this form of censorship , then, they should shut up about the Chinese & Iranians who have also decided to 'protect' their populations from defamatory comments.

Free speech only for the rich and powerful.  Everyone else will have to walk on eggshells lest they be dragged to court and bankrupted.

This does sound good to help people who's lives can be completely destroyed by trolls to the point of suicide sometimes but the problem with the UK government if not all governments is they tend to dress things up "This is to help the public" when actually its just to gain full control and in this case destroy the very last place where freedom of speech exists.

This is fantastic news if the law goes ahead. If someone from another country wants to know a  trollers name and address, all they have to do is ask a British person and the site legally have to give us the details.I can see us Brits will be able to sell this information and make a lot of money because of this law! However, I'm sure unless they are a stupid troller, they will give false details anyway
