Killer genes offer hope for eventual cancer cure

Russian scientists seem to have found a new weapon to fight cancer – killer genes. While the discovery may offer hope, there's a long road ahead before the technique can be used to treat patients.

My husband, who is 57 has been suffering with tongue cancer for 28 years. He has had numerous biopsies, chemotherapy (twice) radiation, and now was told the only hope he has is surgery, which would entail cutting out 2/3 of his tongues, and rebuilding from skin & muscle from his forearm. It is a 10 hr. surgery with only a 30% guarantee that it will work. He absolutely will not do this. Shortly after his decision we would a clinical trial from AstraZeneca given to Mass General Hospital which happens to be where we go for all his care. He has started the drug this week at home. This is not a cure, just buys his time, till hopefully something else comes along. There are tons of side effects, the main two being fatigue, and elevated blood pressure. He is handling this entire situation with much difficulty. Any comments and/or help would be very much appreciated. Thank you, His loving wife Meryl
