In its annual report on the death penalty, Amnesty International said China leads the world in the number of executions, accounting for about three quarters of the estimated 2,400 people executed worldwide annually.

According to 2007 report of the "International Centre for Prison Studies," King's College of London; US has the highest prison population in terms of both absolute number and the ratio of total population. US has 2.19 million people in prison, China 1.55 million and Russia 0.87 million. In terms of total population ratio, China has less prison population than US, Russia, England, Spain and Netherland. US has put 738 in every 100,000 of national population in prison, Russia 611, England 148, Spain 145, Netherlands 128, China 118, Austria 105, Italy 104, Germany 95.
