Touchdown! Russia’s elusive Mars probe crashes into Pacific - or Brazil?

January 15, 2012 18:00

Russia’s Phobos-Grunt, whose mission to a Martian moon went astray before circling the Earth, has finally plunged into the Pacific Ocean, says Russia's Defense Ministry. But other experts insist it landed somewhere in central Brazil.

PR1oh1 That you mention this little fact- we know most leading U.S ivy league University are propping up their standing in the global ranking by offering huge grants to Chinese students. So where are the American boys and girls? Do they find math and science too hard? And if China is leading math and science- how does the U.S wishes to ‘contain China’? The Chinese look to Russia as the standards to copy- and this includes in the sphere of space technology.

@New World OrderActually, China is ahead of Russia in most scientific areas now. Now that Russia does not have the smartest people from the eastern European countries, it will continue to fall farther behind. The whole world know this.

PR1oh1 What amaze me time and again is how deep the idea U.S is number one has been hammered in the minds of many Americans that they cannot imagine living in the world in which the entire world is not think that the U.S is number one. Russia imports lot of stupid things from the West ( most, media people, PR people which Russia does not need but come President Putin after March 4, 2012 this trend will end). What Russia does not need most decidedly is foreign engineer as Russia supplies the world-including the U.S- the best engineers, scientists, mathematicians and computer programmers. But as the U.S fortunes decline and Russia continue with its path to recovery, these engineers are going to stay home. You have no clue how the Russians work. I saw the other day a documentary about WWII which featured Russians cavalry men in horsebacks terrorizing Germany’ soldiers in full armored gears because in WWII Germanys had so much faith in Blitzkrieg. People who do not wish to know about the Russians as a people and how the Russians think and act in the world will never know men on horse backs fighting alongside modern tanks and artilleries. But it was not paying attention to the Russians that lead to Germany’s down fall in WWII and today the Americans do not wish to give the Russians the respect the rest of the world universally gives to the Russians but who will be sorry for this deliberate delusion? Not the Russians—that is for sure.

@New World OrderI continue to be amazed  at your lack of understanding of how things work in the USA. Russia doesn't import foreign engineers? No, because they can't get any to come there! The USA space program is alive and well, just the old low earth orbit program, is under private contract for the this phase of technology that is simple enough to be done by private contractors. The highly technical programs, such as hypersonic flight, and deep space is still under federal guidance. Keep your attention focused on hypersonic flight because you will see the USA  doing it any day now.

NYC Caviar is an "ordinary" Russian dish ( not a "rare" thing as they show in Hollywood films- only for the rich) as for Vodka, this is “holy spirit” that won WWII but one must drink the right amount. I do admit most Russians drink more than they should.

PR1oh1 the U.S space program has already ended. As a commercial enterprise- the U.S corporate space program depends on foreign engineers and foreign money. The Russians have the money and the indigenous engineers so they are going to get only better and the Russian space program will remain Russians- Russia does not import foreign engineers and foreign doctors as they do in the U.S and with the U.S going bankrupt, I am putting my hope for the future of space research with the Russians and not with the U.S.

@New World Order-  Russians have to wait in long lines for bread and vodka.  I doubt they eat caviar for breakfast every day.

The USA lead in space exploration is widening rapidly as the Russians are left far behind. The USA new technology is decades ahead of Russian. I mean the Russians can't even build a good drone and have to buy them from Israel to copy. I think they are not producing good engineers anymore. But many of the best ones in the past came from Ukraine anyway.

NYC The sad thing is you really believe in this B-S! This is the sad thing. The Russians are careless in some cases but Russian technology is superior to U.S technology and this is basic fact—as fact as Lake Baikal has over 25% of all the fresh water in the world and that Russia produced more poets in the first class the Britain, Germany and the U.S combined. Russians is the only country in Europe that does extremely big things such as building the Trans Baikal railway, Win WWII, design must enduring space craft and eat Caviar for breakfast everyday of the week.

Russia will never have a good space pogram because they do everything halfass.  Just look at how many of their rockets blow up and how many submarines sink.  Just watch K-19 to get an accuate picture of how Russians build inferior machines than Americans.
