US official: Alcohol and marital problems behind Afghan rampage

March 16, 2012 07:21

The stress of a fourth consecutive combat deployment coupled with alcohol abuse and a troubled marriage may have driven a US soldier to kill 16 Afghan civilians. The soldier’s lawyer denies the claims, attributing the killing spree to combat trauma.

Post traumatic stress, alcohol abuse, troubled marriage really? are these the reasons they give us? I bet similar reasons can be given for suicide bombers or 9-11 attack, let me give it a go.  Pyschological problems, extreme stress, family members, friends & villages being bombed by US forces, million Iraqi children dead as a result of US sanctions (act of war) before 9-11.

Why should US soldier get sympathy when Arabs do not.  By my account these are similar reasons and for the Arabs the reasons are a lot worse.  He should be executed and buried at sea like OSAMA was along with all his accomplices.

I support our troops, and will until the day I die. I DO NOT support the government. I dont see why we need to send our troops overseas to "fight" for years and years... Why are they in Afghanistan anyway?... Operation Iraqi Freedom is done with. SEND THE TROOPS HOME!!!... I wish the governement had some sensible people in it to lead us.

I say lets keep our "heads" out of other countries "butts"  why do we need to keep "kissing" these countries butts? lets live our lives - every other country does.

Yes, 9-11 was a bad day, the US came together and we all worked through it-- I dont see any other country telling us how to run- stop telling them how to run. WE are the US, they are NOT. Let them be.

For the soldiers family- I'm deeply sorry. I think it is disgusting that they released his name- No one needed to know- especially if no charges have been filed.

There should be a rule on how many deployments a soldier should be allowed. Yes, they decided to go into that lifestyle- but seriously people. Once someone is wounded, or scarred from seeing things NO ONE in the US will EVER see in their lifetime- they should be able to step down and live a normal life (as normal as they can)

BRING THE TROOPS HOME!!!!!!!!!!! ***** NOW!!!!***** &n bsp;

But what sort of treatment?  When I first heard this story, I wondered if he had been on some kind of medication.  Some of the anti-depressant drugs can have really strange side effects, like psychotic episodes.   ;A couple of the older drugs would have a few people waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and thinking, "I must not kill my family.  I must not kill my family."What sort of treatment did this soldier get?  If anything?

I feel so sorry for this man.

He is obviously a good man who fell victim to Post Tramatic Stress.

Fortu nately there's treatments for that and he can live a perfectly normal life. I hope that's what the jury decides.  Treatment as a patient. He isn't a criminal.

The 'excuses' are just a legal trick.
This murderer deserves a noose around his neck as he walks into court. If the facts are established that he was the sole murderer, you then tighten the noose and spare the tax payers...

Liberty,
Lets compare apples with apples...
Russia and Chechnya -- the proper comparison will be -- the American Civil War. When the 11(!) states  (not just one like in Russia) declared their secession from the United States. Please, remind all us what the US government had done with them? And how much blood was spilled to return them back? You are, fric.ing hypocrite, talking about things which are thousands miles away from you, have nothing to do with you, and you know nothing about. And you have nerve to call yourself "liberty". From my money, you are just yet another typical braindead Neocon clone...

Hey wibble,   I think the massacres commited by US troops wich you mentioned (wich I condemn firmly) are nothing compared to the atrocities (rape, murder, theft) committe d by USSR in Poland, Hungary,... and committed by Russia in Chechnya until today!!!   It doesn't require much intelligence to acknowledge that every man (of all nationalities/race) is capable of doing atrocities during war, because that is the effect of ultra violence on the human mind....

A senior US official said the causes were likely to be a combination of stress, alcohol and domestic issues "he just snapped." If he was talking about Bill Clinton? When he snapped and destroyed Yugoslavia? Anyway, as they say, "the fish rots from the head"...

I'm totally ashamed that our leaders have allowed this occupation to go on for so long. This is the unfortunate result of that occupation. There is a movement in this country to stop our global occupation, however the elitist media would have everyone think otherwise. There are no excuses for the killing of innocent people, much less children! I really hope for the day we can all live and let live without this senseless hate.

So the perpetrator becomes the victim. What a surprise. Brain damaged, alcohol abuser, marital problems, multiple tours in Iraq. Where to send him next?  The really sad part is the Afghans will now become lost in the debate. Their lives and memories tarnished by this dreadful act. The mainstream media have ignored the victims, except as an adjunct to the killer. Imagine for a moment the story in reverse. Can you see the outcry? America would mourn for weeks. Yet the Afghans barely rate a mention. That tells you something about the kind of society many Americans inhabit. Although I'm not sure what.

Massacres, murder, theft, dishonesty, etc.. are as American as Coca Cola. Ultimately DENIAL is what keeps these filthy atrocious people doing the same thing time and time again. What next? Bladder problems forced those other 'soldiers' to pee on dead Afghans? SHAMEFUL. The US terrorist forces in Afghanistan are defined by murderers like this - the NORM and not the exception. They were just unlucky enough to get caught.
