A dangerous amount of mercury has been spilled in a sports shop in downtown Moscow.

By late Thursday, rescuers had collected 400 grams of mercury spilt in the Sportmaster store, located in the city centre. Measurements indicated that the concentration of mercury fumes inside exceeded the admissible limits.

"At this moment, a demercurization of the premises continues," said Yevgeny Bobylyov, the chief of Moscow City's Department for Emergency Situations.

The spillage took place at 7.30pm on Thursday. The store was evacuated and workers of the Ministry for Emergency Situations and police rushed to the site.

Babylov cited police as saying, that a man suspected of carrying out the spill had been detained.
