March 17, 2012 02:51

A genetically modified strain of maize created by the notorious American company Monsanto has been temporarily banned in France “to protect the environment.” This comes at a time of protests against the biotech giant in its homeland.

so from last available data directly from FAO (http://faostat .fao.org/site/368/De sktopDefault.aspx?Pa geID=368#ancor)Franc e produce 14357kt, import 1080kt and export 4973kt of Maize, so tell me more about your point ?When Monsanto will hold the entire corn seeds market with their super corn and make you pay to be able to use it it will definitely improve the hunger issue in the world.

If France was actually able to produce its own food, then its bans could mean something.  Go to FAO website to see how much food France imports vs how much they export.  If this country wants to be GMO free for irrational, fear-based reasons, then they should feed themselves.

"..according to some experts,.." - I really wish they elaborated on this. Poor job by the author of the article. No elaboration on the accusations against Monsanto. People need to know the gritty, uncomfortable details about their patents and effects of their crops.
I'm also humored by some of you posting comments, assuming that testing GMO foods on the people eating them is the only possible way to feed large amounts of people...when there have been studies on the effects of it on rats..the effects being negative. Isn't that a bit of a red flag? How about when monsanto has governmental influence? How about when they destroy small time farmers' lives by cornering them into buy their seed or suing them if some seeds blow onto the farmers and begin sprouting..the GMO crops are also effective at sticking around, even moreso than weeds. The negative overshadows the positive effects, in my opinion, because now that this company has its grips on farmers, and their deep pockets can prevent any change from happening... as long as they maintain their unfair governmental influence. Do whatever you can to get the word out about Monsanto. Ha, even if it means liking a comment. Great change needs to happen in this country, and if I had my way, the beginning of change would be marked rightfully by monsanto. Our first basic need is to eat (if you don't count air, or more precisely what's in the air), therefore, to give us more power over the quality of our first basic human need, we need to shift the power away from Monsanto.

Hmm, in France they rely primarily on nuclear energy for power but are afraid of GM foods; in the US they consume lots of GM foods but are afraid of nuclear power. Number of nuclear power deaths in France? None.  Number of GM food related deaths in the US? None.

Great, people are starving to death by the millions and we are destroying a food that was made to survive harsher environments.  S upply isn't the issue. There is more than enough corn and other grains produced to feed the entire world's population but some people think it's a better idea to feed it to cattle instead. I am by no means a vegetarian but raising cattle is one of the most inefficient and environmentally destructive agricultural practices out there.Back to the main issue, Monsanto doesn't care about feeding starving people, they're looking for ways to be able to sell more corn. In this case, they would be able to grow in a new climate.

First off they are not inserting "Bacteria" into maize. They are inserting genes originally found in certain bacteria, essentially quic. starting evolutionary defences that corn would develop naturally over time. I am in no way for the big company capitalism abusing the consumer with tainted food but as a research scientist I am worried that the public is becoming scared of GM foods. If the general public begins to deny the GMO advances then the world food supply will quickly become inadequate. As the middle class begins to starve they'll beg science for an answer and we'll be back to square one. Unfortunately if we deny GMO foods now millions will die before the ignorant public realizes the mistake. My advice: read genuine journal articles from Nature or Plant Physiology etc. Make your own decision if you can understand it. If you cannot understand it then STFU and don't let your ignorance starve the earth.

Great, people are starving to death by the millions and we are destroying a food that was made to survive harsher environments. This corn isn't "un-natural." It's a living organism and there is no evidence that it is harmful to us. How about as soon as there is nobody starving to death, THEN we start to destroy food we believe is unhealthy. I would eat GMO anything, especially if it's cheaper. Your body can't tell the difference. You people are not seeing the big picture. Go a few weeks without food and see if you would pour out a bag of GMO corn.

The scary part is that they are introducing their Corn to Walmart stores this year and they are NOT required to label any of their products as GMO modified.   ; This means the before long, potentially any food you purchase could be from Monsanto.   ;  They have no way of knowing the effects on the populace of ingesting this stuff.   At the bare minimum, they should be required to label their products so people don't unknowingly buy them, this is scary.

As americans, lets band together and refuse to buy their brands. Most stores have generic brands and are cheaper. These GM foods are gona make us ill and then the drug co.'s will come out with a drug to "FIX" us and get they will get richer still of more of us being ill. I see it coming. If France can ban it, we can too, at least from our own houses until we get petitions in place. I will start a page on facebook for this and prob call it "NO to Monsanto" !!

This is great and encouraging news.  Few companies in the world market are as inherntly misguided, and in fact evil, than Monsanto.

Whatever Monsanto and similar companies make should be banned everywhere. Let agriculture be in the hands of the "small man" i.e. the farmer, not in the hands of corrupt criminal transnational agro-businesses.

What a good idea. More countries should ban genetically modified food. I wish Australia had remain G.M free. Ours is an island continent and it would have been easy to remain that way without fear of contamination from G.M crops. It would have been commercially advantagious as we could have pride our products to be natural and G.M free. I would have thought that our experts in the industry knows best or are they in the pockets of  "Monst ersanto" .

It's time to stop Banksters monopolizing the world's food supplies. Monansanto has been creating Franken food for the masses of Frankensteine. They must be stopped before the world population is infected by some unknown pest. When will India among others reject Monsanto genticially modified food?

The problem here is Patents. Remove the Patents and the business model of Monsanto comes crashing to the ground.

Most Patents does more harm than good. Like big pharma giving us life long treatments instead of cures as to maximizes their profits.  And when it comes to biology patents are just wrong, immoral and evil. You don't want profits to triumph everything else when scientists tinker with nature and our future.
