It's going to be interesting to see who wins the NHL Hart Trophy ask Most Valuable Player -- but you can bet it will be a Russian superstar, as all three finalists hail from Russia. The really interesting decision is going to be between The Great Eight, Ovechkin -- who has become probably the most popular player in Canada, or Malkin who defied all the critics who said the Regular Season scoring leader (who narrowly beati out Ovechkin) would "disappear" in the playoffs. Instead he topped the NHL2009 Playoffs scoring race as well, but more than that, Malkin played great defensively. He blocked shots, dished out punishing body checks, played hard and used his large size to dominate the boards at both ends of the rink. He even got into a fight! Although it was with a Swede so I'm not sure that counts as a "fight". Who will win? I suspect it will be Ovechkin because he is such a fan favorite around the entire league -- the most entertaining player to watch since Gretzky or Bobby Orr (and he's funny and doesn't use worn out cliches when interviewed! Ovechkin also has the edge because the NHL players themselves voted for him as MVP as did the AP News Service, and also because the MVP voting is not supposed to include acts committed by the nominated players during the playoffs, but only the regular season. Still Malkin beat out teammate Sidney Crosby and Ovechkin in regular season scoring. Add to that Malkin's dominating play during the come-from-behind Pittsburgh Penguins' Stanley Cup upset win, and Malkin deserves it. Who would you vote for? Tough question, but there's no incorrect answer. They are both great. And the other contender, a certain Pavel D. from Detriot, isn't exactly chopped liver either!
